The Bible Says
Proverbs 13:5 Meaning

In Proverbs 13:5, Solomon writes, A righteous man hates falsehood, but a wicked man acts disgustingly and shamefully (v. 5). Righteousness is not only love for what is good, but hatred for what is false. The righteous do not merely avoid lies when convenient; they reject falsehood at the level of the heart.

To hate falsehood means to see deceit as a violation of reality and of love for one’s neighbor. Truth matters because God is true, and human community depends on honesty. The righteous therefore develop a moral aversion to lying, manipulation, and pretense.

The wicked, however, acts disgustingly and shamefully. Once truth is abandoned, conduct becomes corrupted. Shameful action follows falsehood because distortion in the heart eventually appears in behavior. This proverb shows that truthfulness is not a minor virtue; it is central to righteous living.
