In Proverbs 13:8, Solomon says, The ransom of a man’s life is his wealth, but the poor hears no rebuke (v. 8). Wealth can serve as a practical protection in certain situations. It can function as a ransom in the sense that it provides options, leverage, or relief from danger.
At the same time, the proverb acknowledges that poverty can sometimes spare a person from being targeted in the same way. The poor man hears no rebuke, likely meaning he escapes the kind of threat or extortion wealth can attract. Proverbs often recognizes that riches bring both advantages and burdens.
The larger point is that social realities are complex, and money is neither absolute safety nor absolute curse. Wealth can protect, but it can also expose. Wisdom therefore refuses to idolize riches, even while acknowledging their practical power in a fallen world.
