In Proverbs 13:9, Solomon writes, The light of the righteous rejoices, but the lamp of the wicked goes out (v. 9). Light in Proverbs often symbolizes life, hope, truth, and flourishing. The righteous are associated with such brightness because their path aligns with reality and with God.
The light of the righteous rejoices because righteousness has a life-giving and expansive quality. It brings gladness, clarity, and endurance. Like dawn growing toward full day, the path of righteousness shines with increasing strength.
The lamp of the wicked, however, goes out. Wickedness cannot sustain light because it is rooted in distortion and death. Its flame is temporary. What seems bright for a moment is eventually extinguished because it lacks lasting fuel.
