In He established the earth upon its foundations, So that it will not totter forever and ever (v. 5), Psalm 104:5-9 testifies that God firmly set the world in place as part of His ordered creation. This statement points to the sovereign power by which the Lord crafted the earth, giving it stability and robust foundations. Recalling how God set the universe in motion (John 1:3), the verse portrays the world as secure under God’s unchanging authority, emphasizing that His creation will not be shaken by earthly or cosmic turmoil.
You covered it with the deep as with a garment; The waters were standing above the mountains (v. 6) describes how God once allowed the waters to envelop the earth like a protective cloak. The imagery evokes both the primeval waters at the dawn of creation and the flood narrative from Genesis. Here, mountains — towering geological features recognized for their majesty — are pictured as submerged under a flood, highlighting the comprehensive coverage of those waters. The psalmist uses this vivid depiction to reflect on God’s power to arrange the boundaries of land and sea, reminding us that what He covers can just as easily be uncovered at His command.
When we read At Your rebuke they fled, At the sound of Your thunder they hurried away (v. 7), we see an image of God’s spoken word driving back the waters. The psalmist points to the voice of the Lord as His divine instrument, ensuring all things obey His will. Just as in Genesis 1:9-10, where God gathered the waters into one place and exposed dry land, this verse underscores again that even the most overwhelming forces in nature submit to His authority. Nothing in creation can resist when the Almighty speaks.
The psalmist continues in The mountains rose; the valleys sank down To the place which You established for them (v. 8). Here, the changes in elevation, from towering mountains to low—lying valleys, exist as part of the perfect landscape God designed. Every portion of the land — from high peaks to deep valleys — reflects the deliberate order He imposed on the world. This arrangement demonstrates not only God’s attention to the grand design but also His careful provision, as both elevated and lower areas have their role within the larger ecosystem He formed.
Finally, You set a boundary that they may not pass over, So that they will not return to cover the earth (v. 9) reassures that God determined where seas should be, preventing them from once again overwhelming the land. This boundary serves as a testimony that creation has distinct limits under God’s care. The seas, though vast and powerful, remain contained, reinforcing that nothing operates outside the Lord’s supervision. This ultimate control offers a promise of security for humanity, reminding us that the Creator maintains His world with unwavering consistency.
