Apesar de todos os eventos milagrosos das nove primeiras pragas, Deus adverte a Moisés de que o Faraó não o ouvirá. Embora tal atitude isso não fosse um obstáculo aos planos do SENHOR, Ele lembra a Moisés que a teimosia do Faraó possibilitaria que Suas maravilhas se multiplicassem na terra do Egito. Através dessas pragas, o SENHOR mostrou que os deuses e deusas do Egito eram impotentes diante Dele. Mesmo o próprio Faraó, embora considerado divino, nada podia fazer para impedir que acontecessem. Tanto os egípcios quanto os israelitas tiveram que aprender isso. Mesmo após Moisés e Arão terem realizado todas essas maravilhas diante do Faraó, ainda assim o Senhor endureceu o coração do Faraó, e ele não deixou os filhos de Israel saírem de sua terra. Tudo isso fazia parte do plano soberano do Senhor e a última praga, a morte dos primogênitos, não seria uma exceção.
