Em Êxodo 13:1-2 o senhor diz: Santifica-me todos os primogênitos, todo o que abre a madre de sua mãe entre os filhos de Israel, assim de homens como de animais; é meu. A idéia por trás da palavra "santificar" (em hebraico “qadesh”) é "separar para um propósito especial", "declarar santo" ou "dedicar para o uso exclusivo de Deus". O "primogênito" (somente do sexo masculino - ver versículo 12) pertencia ao SENHOR e somente a Ele.
Para deixar ainda mais explícito, o primogênito era a primeira descendência de todo útero (literalmente "o que abre o ventre") incluía também a vida animal. O SENHOR declara que todos os primogênitos do povo de Israel e seus animais pertencem a Mim, em outras palavras, aqueles a quem o SENHOR consagra devem ser separados para Seu serviço.
