Tanto o avô quanto o irmão de Abrão se chamavam Naor. Uma cidade conhecida como Nahur está localizada não muito longe de Harã, no noroeste da Mesopotâmia. O avô Naor viveu 138 anos, uma expectativa de vida muito menor do que seu pai, Serugue (230 anos) ou seu filho, Terá (205 anos). Rebeca, esposa de Isaque e mãe de Esaú e Jacó, veio da "cidade de Naor" (Gênesis 24:10) e era neta de Naor (Gênesis 22:23). Este nome da cidade poderia estar ligado a Naor.
Fontes assírias mencionam o topônimo Til (ša) Turaḫi situado no rio Balikh, não muito longe de Harã e Naor. O nome pode estar ligado a Terá. Terá tornou-se pai muito mais tarde (setenta anos) que seus antecessores, que haviam se tornado pais aos trinta e poucos anos.
Abrão era a 10ª geração depois de Sem, assim como Noé foi a 10ª geração depois de Adão. Assim como o nascimento de Adão e Noé, o nascimento de Abrão representa um ponto de inflexão na história humana. Abrão persistiu em sua fé e foi declarado justo diante de Deus, como Romanos 4:3 declara: "Pois o que diz a Escritura? 'Abraão creu em Deus, e isso lhe foi imputado por justiça" (Romanos 4:20-23; Gênesis 15:5-6).
