Em Provérbios 10:15, Salomão escreve: Os bens do rico são a sua cidade forte; a pobreza dos pobres é a sua destruição (v. 15). Este provérbio reconhece uma realidade prática da vida em um mundo caído: os recursos podem proporcionar proteção, enquanto a sua falta pode expor uma pessoa às dificuldades. Salomão está descrevendo como as coisas geralmente funcionam em condições normais.
A riqueza pode funcionar como uma fortaleza, pois oferece opções, proteção e uma barreira contra crises. Os Provérbios não negam a utilidade prática do dinheiro. Ao mesmo tempo, jamais ensinam que a riqueza é a fonte suprema de segurança. A riqueza é uma fortaleza limitada, não absoluta.
Os pobres são descritos como vulneráveis à ruína, o que destaca a dureza da pobreza. A carência pode agravar as dificuldades e tornar uma pessoa frágil de muitas maneiras. No entanto, em outras passagens das Escrituras, somos lembrados de que o refúgio final não se encontra nas riquezas, mas em Deus, que é a verdadeira fortaleza do seu povo (Salmo 18:2).
