Em Provérbios 10:27, Salomão escreve: O temor de Jeová prolonga os dias, mas os anos dos perversos serão abreviados (v. 27). O temor de Jeová é um dos temas fundamentais de Provérbios. Significa viver com reverência, humildade e profundo respeito por Deus e pela Sua ordem.
Esse temor prolonga a vida porque leva a escolhas sábias. Uma pessoa que teme ao Senhor tende a evitar muitos padrões autodestrutivos que encurtam a vida e diminuem a plenitude. O temor de Jeová mantém a pessoa ancorada na realidade, e essa realidade é vivificante.
Os ímpios agem na direção oposta e, portanto, seus anos serão abreviados. Isso pode acontecer literalmente, moralmente ou em termos de aliança, porque o pecado traz ruína em si mesmo. A questão principal é que a reverência a Deus conduz à vida, enquanto a rebeldia conduz à destruição.
