Em Provérbios 11:9, Salomão escreve: Com a sua boca, o ímpio destrói o seu vizinho, mas os justos serão livres pelo conhecimento (v. 9). As palavras são uma das principais preocupações de Provérbios, e aqui Salomão mostra como a fala pode se tornar um instrumento de destruição. Os ímpios usam a boca para prejudicar os outros.
Destruir o próximo com palavras inclui calúnia, manipulação, mentiras, falso testemunho e discurso corrosivo. A comunidade depende da verdade e, quando a fala é usada como arma, tanto os relacionamentos quanto a justiça ficam ameaçados. O livro de Provérbios trata isso repetidamente como um grave mal moral.
Mas, por meio do conhecimento, os justos serão libertados. Conhecimento aqui é sabedoria prática enraizada na verdade de Deus. Permite aos justos enxergarem com clareza, responderem com sabedoria e evitarem ser enganados. Jesus também ensina que a verdade liberta (João 8:32).
