A verdade transmitida em Provérbios 12:13 é que Pela transgressão dos lábios, se enlaça o mau, mas o justo escapará da angústia (v. 13). Mais uma vez, a fala se torna um campo de batalha moral. Palavras perversas não apenas ferem os outros; elas também aprisionam quem as profere.
A transgressão de seus lábios inclui mentiras, calúnias, discursos precipitados e palavras manipuladoras. Tal discurso forma uma armadilha porque cria consequências que recaem sobre quem o proferiu. A maldade muitas vezes desmorona através do próprio instrumento que usou para causar dano.
Os justos, porém, escaparão dos problemas. Isso não significa que nunca enfrentarão provações, mas que a justiça os protege de muitas armadilhas que eles mesmos criam. A palavra verdadeira preserva porque está em consonância com a realidade. Tiago 3 expande esse tema posteriormente, mostrando o poder da língua em direcionar a vida.
