A sabedoria expressa em Provérbios 12:9 revela que Melhor é aquele que é estimado em pouco e tem servo do que quem se engrandece a si mesmo e tem falta de pão (v. 9). Este provérbio adverte contra viver para as aparências. É melhor possuir bens materiais modestos do que uma arrogância inflada.
O homem que goza de pouca estima pode não ter status público, mas possui estabilidade suficiente para sustentar sua família. A menção de ter um empregado doméstico sugere alguma provisão prática e ordem em sua vida. Sua reputação externa é pequena, mas sua vida tem substância real.
Aquele que se vangloria, porém, vive em ilusão. Ele tenta projetar grandeza enquanto lhe falta o pão de cada dia, ou seja, ele não consegue nem mesmo suprir suas necessidades básicas. Os Provérbios se opõem consistentemente a esse tipo de vaidade. A sabedoria valoriza a verdade acima da imagem, e a essência acima da ostentação.
