This is the real issue. If a true contradiction, or error, can be clearly demonstrated, then the concept of the inerrancy of the Scripture must fall by the wayside. Critics are quick to point out that there are demonstrable errors in Scripture.
However so-called errors in the Bible can be divided into three basic categories.
1. There Is A Misunderstanding Of ScriptureIn the first category there is a misunderstanding of what the Bible says or does not say. The error is with the person attributing something to Scripture that is not there. Consequently there are nor error in these instances.
2. The Difficulties Have A Legitimate SolutionThere is another category of so-called errors, which, in actuality, are merely difficulties. These difficulties have legitimate solutions that can resolve them. Consequently they cannot be called errors if a legitimate solution can be offered.
3. There Are Difficulties That Do Not Have Apparent SolutionsThere are a number of places in Scripture where there is no apparent solution to the difficulty. It is mainly these places where critics accuse the Bible of error. However, a few things need to be said. The fact that there is presently no solution to a particular difficulty does not mean there will never be a solution. As advances in linguistics study, history, and archaeology continue to take place more of the so-called errors of Scripture have plausible solutions.
We Must Wait And SeeFor those few places where no apparent solution is available the believer waits for further knowledge to vindicate Scripture. As we have seen so often in the past, further knowledge has erased Bible difficulties time and time again.
It has been alleged that there are obvious errors in the Bible. However the examples that are usually given are difficulties not errors. Furthermore most difficulties in Scripture have plausible explanations. There are only a few Bible difficulties where no adequate solution is presently known. Again this does not mean the Scripture is in error - it only means that no reasonable solution is available at the present time.
The Blue Letter Bible ministry and the BLB Institute hold to the historical, conservative Christian faith, which includes a firm belief in the inerrancy of Scripture. Since the text and audio content provided by BLB represent a range of evangelical traditions, all of the ideas and principles conveyed in the resource materials are not necessarily affirmed, in total, by this ministry.
