Atkinson served as a chorister at Norwich Cathedral. He earned his music degree from Cambridge University in 1867, and was organist and choirmaster at St. Luke’s Church in Manningham, Bradford; Norwich Cathedral (1881-85); and St. Mary’s Parish Church in Lewisham.
