Born: September 4, 1824, Hamilton County, Ohio.

Died: July 31, 1871, Newport, Rhode Island.

Buried: Her body was returned to New York for burial “from All Souls” in Green Wood Cemetery (Brooklyn?), next to her sister.

Phoebe Cary (1824-1871)

Cary and her sister wrote poetry that appeared in numerous newspapers and magazines. They moved to New York in 1852. Phoebe’s works include:

  • Poems and Parodies (Boston, Massachusetts: Ticknor, Reed and Fields, 1854)
  • Poems of Faith, Hope and Love, 1868
  • Hymns for All Christians, 1869 (co-edited with her pastor, Dr. Charles F. Deems)
