Born: April 4, 1810, Hanover, New Hampshire.

Died: June 8, 1888, Boston, Massachusetts.

James Freeman Clarke (1810-1888)

Clarke graduated from Harvard College (arts, 1829; divinity, 1833). After ordination as a Unitarian minister, he pastored at Louisville, Kentucky (1833-1840); at the Church of the Disciples, Boston, Massachusetts (1841-1850); and from 1853. While in Louisville, he edited for a while The Western Messenger. His works include:

  • Hymn Book for the Church of the Disciples, 1844, 1852
  • The Christian Doctrine of Prayer, 1854
  • Orthodoxy, Its Truths and Errors, 1866
