Hosmer graduated from Harvard University and Harvard Divinity School and became a Unitarian minister. He served in Northboro, Massachusetts; Quincy, Illinois; St. Louis, Missouri; and Berkeley, California. In 1880 and 1911, he helped produce editions of Unity Hymns and Carols. He was a recognized authority on hymnody, and taught the subject at Harvard Divinity School.
