Newman attended Trinity College, Oxford, originally intending to study law. However, he decided to enter the ministry instead, and was ordained in 1824. His first post was as curate of St. Clement’s, Oxford. Newman was a leader of the Oxford Movement, and a gifted writer. Among his best known writings are his Apologia, and “Dream of Gerontius.” Though raised a Calvinist, Newman migrated to Roman Catholicism, and eventually became Cardinal-Deacon of St. George in Velabro, in 1879. The Catholic Encyclopedia carries a lengthy article on him.
