They replied, “We have clearly seen how the LORD has been with you. We think there should be an oath between two parties — between us and you. Let us make a covenant with you:
“and we answered my lord, ‘We have an elderly father and a younger brother, the child of his old age. The boy's brother is dead. He is the only one of his mother's sons left, and his father loves him.'
“But we said to my lord, ‘The boy cannot leave his father. If he were to leave, his father would die.'
“We told him, ‘We cannot go down unless our younger brother goes with us. If our younger brother isn't with us, we cannot see the man.'
“Therefore we said: Let's take action and build an altar for ourselves, but not for burnt offering or sacrifice.
“We thought that if they said this to us or to our generations in the future, we would reply: Look at the replica of the LORD's altar that our ancestors made, not for burnt offering or sacrifice, but as a witness between us and you.
So we questioned the elders and asked, “Who gave you the order to rebuild this temple and finish this structure? ”
I did this because I was ashamed to ask the king for infantry and cavalry to protect us from enemies during the journey, since we had told him, “The hand of our God is gracious to all who seek him, but his fierce anger is against all who abandon him.”
“However, when King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon marched into the land, we said, ‘Come, let's go into Jerusalem to get away from the Chaldean and Aramean armies.' So we have been living in Jerusalem.”
