Abraham replied, “I thought, ‘There is absolutely no fear of God in this place. They will kill me because of my wife.'

“So when God had me wander from my father's house, I said to her: Show your loyalty to me wherever we go and say about me, ‘He's my brother.' ”

“But I said to my master, ‘Suppose the woman will not come back with me? '

“Today when I came to the spring, I prayed: LORD, God of my master Abraham, if only you will make my journey successful!

“Before I had finished praying silently, there was Rebekah coming with her jug on her shoulder, and she went down to the spring and drew water. So I said to her, ‘Please let me have a drink.'

“Then I asked her, ‘Whose daughter are you? ' She responded, ‘The daughter of Bethuel son of Nahor, whom Milcah bore to him.' So I put the ring on her nose and the bracelets on her wrists.

Abimelech sent for Isaac and said, “So she is really your wife! How could you say, ‘She is my sister'? ”

Isaac answered him, “Because I thought I might die on account of her.”

“In that dream the angel of God said to me, ‘Jacob! ' and I said, ‘Here I am.'

Jacob answered, “I was afraid, for I thought you would take your daughters from me by force.

“The thin heads of grain swallowed the seven good ones. I told this to the magicians, but no one can tell me what it means.”

“I told you: Let my son go so that he may worship me, but you refused to let him go. Look, I am about to kill your firstborn son! ”

“So I said to them, ‘Whoever has gold, take it off,' and they gave it to me. When I threw it into the fire, out came this calf! ”

“Since the life of every creature is its blood, I have told the Israelites: You are not to eat the blood of any creature, because the life of every creature is its blood; whoever eats it must be cut off.

“And I promised you: You will inherit their land, since I will give it to you to possess, a land flowing with milk and honey. I am the LORD your God who set you apart from the peoples.

“Now go to your home! I said I would reward you richly, but look, the LORD has denied you a reward.”

“I said to you at that time: I can't bear the responsibility for you on my own.

“I said to you: You have reached the hill country of the Amorites, which the LORD our God is giving us.

“So I said to you: Don't be terrified or afraid of them!

“I prayed to the LORD:

Lord GOD, do not annihilate your people, your inheritance, whom you redeemed through your greatness and brought out of Egypt with a strong hand.

“The LORD will take you back in ships to Egypt by a route that I said you would never see again. There you will sell yourselves to your enemies as male and female slaves, but no one will buy you.”

“I would have said: I will cut them to pieces[fn]

and blot out the memory of them from mankind,

“Tell the Israelites: Select your cities of refuge, as I instructed you through Moses,

“Therefore, I now say: I will not drive out these people before you. They will be thorns[fn] in your sides, and their gods will be a trap for you.”

“I said to you: I am the LORD your God. Do not fear the gods of the Amorites whose land you live in. But you did not obey me.' ”

The angel of the LORD answered Manoah, “Your wife needs to do everything I told her.

“I was sure you hated her,” her father said, “so I gave her to one of the men who accompanied you. Isn't her younger sister more beautiful than she is? Why not take her instead? ”

“Return home, my daughters. Go on, for I am too old to have another husband. Even if I thought there was still hope for me to have a husband tonight and to bear sons,

“I thought I should inform you: Buy it back in the presence of those seated here and in the presence of the elders of my people. If you want to redeem it, do it. But if you do[fn] not want to redeem it, tell me so that I will know, because there isn't anyone other than you to redeem it, and I am next after you.”

“I want to redeem it,” he answered.

“Therefore, this is the declaration of the LORD, the God of Israel: ‘I did say that your family and your forefather's family would walk before me forever. But now,' this is the LORD's declaration, ‘no longer! For those who honor me I will honor, but those who despise me will be disgraced.

“I thought, ‘The Philistines will now descend on me at Gilgal, and I haven't sought the LORD's favor.' So I forced myself to offer the burnt offering.”

“You can see with your own eyes that the LORD handed you over to me today in the cave. Someone advised me to kill you, but I[fn][fn] took pity on you and said: I won't lift my hand against my lord, since he is the LORD's anointed.

“Otherwise, as surely as the LORD God of Israel lives, who prevented me from harming you, if you had not come quickly to meet me, Nabal wouldn't have had any males[fn] left by morning light.”

“When he turned around and saw me, he called out to me, so I answered: I'm at your service.

He answered, “While the baby was alive, I fasted and wept because I thought, ‘Who knows? The LORD may be gracious to me and let him live.'

So the king of Israel said to Jehoshaphat, “Didn't I tell you he never prophesies good about me, but only disaster? ”

Then she said, “Did I ask my lord for a son? Didn't I say, ‘Do not lie to me? ' ”

David said to God, “Wasn't I the one who gave the order to count the people? I am the one who has sinned and acted very wickedly. But these sheep, what have they done? LORD my God, please let your hand be against me and against my father's family, but don't let the plague be against your people.”

In the eighteenth year of Josiah's reign, this Passover was observed.

Then I said to them, “You are holy to the LORD, and the articles are holy. The silver and gold are a freewill offering to the LORD God of your ancestors.

And I said:

My God, I am ashamed and embarrassed to lift my face toward you, my God, because our iniquities are higher than our heads and our guilt is as high as the heavens.

I said,

LORD, the God of the heavens, the great and awe-inspiring God who keeps his gracious covenant with those who love him and keep his commands,

and replied to the king, “May the king live forever! Why should I[fn] not be sad when the city where my ancestors are buried lies in ruins and its gates have been destroyed by fire? ”

and answered the king, “If it pleases the king, and if your servant has found favor with you, send me to Judah and to the city where my ancestors are buried,[fn] so that I may rebuild it.”

I also said to the king, “If it pleases the king, let me have letters written to the governors of the region west of the Euphrates River, so that they will grant me safe passage until I reach Judah.

So I said to them, “You see the trouble we are in. Jerusalem lies in ruins and its gates have been burned. Come, let's rebuild Jerusalem's wall, so that we will no longer be a disgrace.”

I gave them this reply, “The God of the heavens is the one who will grant us success. We, his servants, will start building, but you have no share, right, or historic claim in Jerusalem.”

After I made an inspection, I stood up and said to the nobles, the officials, and the rest of the people, “Don't be afraid of them. Remember the great and awe-inspiring Lord, and fight for your countrymen, your sons and daughters, your wives and homes.”

Then I said to the nobles, the officials, and the rest of the people, “The work is enormous and spread out, and we are separated far from one another along the wall.

At that time, I also said to the people, “Let everyone and his servant spend the night inside Jerusalem, so that they can stand guard by night and work by day.”

After seriously considering the matter, I accused the nobles and officials, saying to them, “Each of you is charging his countrymen interest.” So I called a large assembly against them

I also shook the folds of my robe and said, “May God likewise shake from his house and property everyone who doesn't keep this promise. May he be shaken out and have nothing! ”

The whole assembly said, “Amen,” and they praised the LORD. Then the people did as they had promised.

But I said, “Should a man like me run away? How can someone like me enter the temple and live? I will not go.”

I said to them, “Do not open the gates of Jerusalem until the sun is hot, and let the doors be shut and securely fastened while the guards are on duty. Station the citizens of Jerusalem as guards, some at their posts and some at their homes.”

I ordered that the rooms be purified, and I had the articles of the house of God restored there, along with the grain offering and frankincense.

Therefore, I rebuked the officials, asking, “Why has the house of God been neglected? ” I gathered the Levites and singers together and stationed them at their posts.

I rebuked the nobles of Judah and said to them, “What is this evil you are doing ​— ​profaning the Sabbath day?

When shadows began to fall on the city gates of Jerusalem just before the Sabbath, I gave orders that the city gates be closed and not opened until after the Sabbath. I posted some of my men at the gates, so that no goods could enter during the Sabbath day.

but I warned them, “Why are you camping in front of the wall? If you do it again, I'll use force[fn] against you.” After that they did not come again on the Sabbath.

When I say, “My bed will comfort me,

and my couch will ease my complaint,”

So I thought, “I will die in my own nest

and multiply my days as the sand.[fn]

I thought that age should speak

and maturity should teach wisdom.

Therefore I say, “Listen to me.

I too will declare what I know.”

when I declared, “You may come this far, but no farther;

your proud waves stop here”?

I[fn] said to the LORD, “You are my Lord;

I have nothing good besides you.”[fn]

When I was secure, I said,

“I will never be shaken.”

But I trust in you, LORD;

I say, “You are my God.”

In my alarm I said,

“I am cut off from your sight.”

But you heard the sound of my pleading

when I cried to you for help.

Then I acknowledged my sin to you

and did not conceal my iniquity.

I said, “I will confess my transgressions to the LORD,”

and you forgave the guilt of my sin.Selah

For I said, “Don't let them rejoice over me —

those who are arrogant toward me when I stumble.”

I said, “I will guard my ways

so that I may not sin with my tongue;

I will guard my mouth with a muzzle

as long as the wicked are in my presence.”

I did not hide your righteousness in my heart;

I spoke about your faithfulness and salvation;

I did not conceal your constant love and truth

from the great assembly.

I said, “LORD, be gracious to me;

heal me, for I have sinned against you.”

I said, “If only I had wings like a dove!

I would fly away and find rest.

Did I purify my heart

and wash my hands in innocence for nothing?

“I say to the boastful, ‘Do not boast,'

and to the wicked, ‘Do not lift up your horn.

So I say, “I am grieved

that the right hand of the Most High has changed.”[fn]

I said, “You are gods;

you are all sons of the Most High.

For forty years I was disgusted with that generation;

I said, “They are a people whose hearts go astray;

they do not know my ways.”

In my alarm I said,

“Everyone is a liar.”

The LORD is my portion;[fn]

I have promised to keep your words.

If I say, “Surely the darkness will hide me,

and the light around me will be night” —

I say to the LORD, “You are my God.”

Listen, LORD, to my cry for help.

I cry to you, LORD;

I say, “You are my shelter,

my portion in the land of the living.”

I said about laughter, “It is madness,” and about pleasure, “What does this accomplish? ”

So I said to myself, “What happens to the fool will also happen to me. Why then have I been overly wise? ” And I said to myself that this is also futile.

I said to myself, “God will judge the righteous and the wicked, since there is a time for every activity and every work.”

A man may father a hundred children and live many years. No matter how long he lives,[fn] if he is not satisfied by good things and does not even have a proper burial, I say that a stillborn child is better off than he.

I have tested all this by wisdom. I resolved, “I will be wise,” but it was beyond me.

There is a futility that is done on the earth: there are righteous people who get what the actions of the wicked deserve, and there are wicked people who get what the actions of the righteous deserve. I say that this too is futile.

And I said, “Wisdom is better than strength, but the wisdom of the poor man is despised, and his words are not heeded.”

I said, “I will climb the palm tree

and take hold of its fruit.”

May your breasts be like clusters of grapes,

and the fragrance of your breath like apricots.

Then I said:

Woe is me for I am ruined[fn]

because I am a man of unclean lips

and live among a people of unclean lips,

and because my eyes have seen the King,

the LORD of Armies.

Then I heard the voice of the Lord asking:

Who will I send?

Who will go for us?

I said:

Here I am. Send me.

Then I said, “Until when, Lord? ” And he replied:

Until cities lie in ruins without inhabitants,

houses are without people,

the land is ruined and desolate,

Therefore I said,

“Look away from me! Let me weep bitterly!

Do not try to comfort me

about the destruction of my dear[fn] people.”

I said: In the prime[fn] of my life

I must go to the gates of Sheol;

I am deprived of the rest of my years.

A voice was saying, “Cry out! ”

Another said,[fn] “What should I cry out? ”

“All humanity is grass,

and all its goodness is like the flower of the field.

“I have not spoken in secret,

somewhere in a land of darkness.

I did not say to the descendants of Jacob:

Seek me in a wasteland.

I am the LORD, who speaks righteously,

who declares what is right.

“I declare the end from the beginning,

and from long ago what is not yet done,

saying: my plan will take place,

and I will do all my will.

But I myself said: I have labored in vain,

I have spent my strength for nothing and futility;

yet my vindication is with the LORD,

and my reward is with my God.

“I was sought by those who did not ask;

I was found by those who did not seek me.

I said, ‘Here I am, here I am,'

to a nation that did not call on[fn] my name.

But I protested, “Oh no, Lord GOD! Look, I don't know how to speak since I am only a youth.”

Then the word of the LORD came to me, asking, “What do you see, Jeremiah? ”

I replied, “I see a branch of an almond tree.”

Again the word of the LORD came to me asking, “What do you see? ”

And I replied, “I see a boiling pot, its lip tilted from the north to the south.”

“I thought, ‘After she has done all these things, she will return to me.'  But she didn't return, and her treacherous sister Judah saw it.

I thought, “How I long to make you my sons

and give you a desirable land,

the most beautiful inheritance of all the nations.”

I thought, “You will call me ‘My Father'

and never turn away from me.”

I said, “Oh no, Lord GOD, you have certainly deceived this people and Jerusalem, by announcing, ‘You will have peace,' while a sword is at[fn] our throats.”

Then I thought:

They are just the poor;

they have been foolish.

For they don't understand the way of the LORD,

the justice of their God.

Woe to me because of my brokenness —

I am severely wounded!

I exclaimed, “This is my intense suffering,

but I must bear it.”

in order to establish the oath I swore to your ancestors, to give them a land flowing with milk and honey, as it is today.' ”

I answered, “Amen, LORD.”

And I replied, “Oh no, Lord GOD! The prophets are telling them, ‘You won't see sword or suffer famine. I will certainly give you lasting peace in this place.' ”

I say, “I won't mention him

or speak any longer in his name.”

But his message becomes a fire burning in my heart,

shut up in my bones.

I become tired of holding it in,

and I cannot prevail.

The LORD said to me, “What do you see, Jeremiah? ”

I said, “Figs! The good figs are very good, but the bad figs are extremely bad, so bad they are inedible.”

I set jars filled with wine and some cups before the sons of the house of the Rechabites and said to them, “Drink wine! ”

Then I thought, “My future[fn] is lost,

as well as my hope from the LORD.”

Water flooded over my head,

and I thought, “I'm going to die! ”

But I said, “Oh, Lord GOD, I have never been defiled. From my youth until now I have not eaten anything that died naturally or was mauled by wild beasts. And impure meat has never entered my mouth.”

While they were killing, I was left alone. And I fell facedown and cried out, “Oh, Lord GOD! Are you going to destroy the entire remnant of Israel when you pour out your wrath on Jerusalem? ”

Now while I was prophesying, Pelatiah son of Benaiah died. Then I fell facedown and cried out loudly, “Oh, Lord GOD! You are bringing the remnant of Israel to an end! ”

“After I exhaust my wrath against the wall and against those who plaster it with whitewash, I will say to you, “The wall is no more and neither are those who plastered it ​— ​

I also said to them, “Throw away, each of you, the abhorrent things that you prize,[fn] and do not defile yourselves with the idols of Egypt. I am the LORD your God.”

“ ‘But the house of Israel rebelled against me in the wilderness. They did not follow my statutes and they rejected my ordinances ​— ​the person who does them will live by them. They also completely profaned my Sabbaths. So I considered pouring out my wrath on them in the wilderness to put an end to them.

“ ‘Then I said to their children in the wilderness, “Don't follow the statutes of your fathers, defile yourselves with their idols, or keep their ordinances.

“ ‘But the children rebelled against me. They did not follow my statutes or carefully keep my ordinances ​— ​the person who does them will live by them. They also profaned my Sabbaths. So I considered pouring out my wrath on them and exhausting my anger against them in the wilderness.

Then I said, “Oh, Lord GOD, they are saying of me, ‘Isn't he just composing parables? ' ”

“Then I said concerning this woman worn out by adultery: Will they[fn] now have illicit sex with her, even her?

So I answered them, “The word of the LORD came to me:

Then he said to me, “Son of man, can these bones live? ”

I replied, “Lord GOD, only you know.”

When the magicians, mediums, Chaldeans, and diviners came in, I told them the dream, but they could not make its interpretation known to me.

I prayed to the LORD my God and confessed:

Ah, Lord ​— ​the great and awe-inspiring God who keeps his gracious covenant with those who love him and keep his commands ​— ​

Suddenly one with human likeness touched my lips. I opened my mouth and said to the one standing in front of me, “My lord, because of the vision, anguish overwhelms me and I am powerless.

He said, “Don't be afraid, you who are[fn] treasured by God. Peace to you; be very strong! ”

As he spoke to me, I was strengthened and said, “Let my lord speak, for you have strengthened me.”

I heard but did not understand. So I asked, “My lord, what will be the outcome of these things? ”

I said to her, “You are to live with me many days. You must not be promiscuous or belong to any man, and I will act the same way toward you.”

When the locusts finished eating the vegetation of the land, I said, “Lord GOD, please forgive! How will Jacob survive since he is so small? ”

Then I said, “Lord GOD, please stop! How will Jacob survive since he is so small? ”

The LORD asked me, “What do you see, Amos? ”

I replied, “A plumb line.”

Then the Lord said, “I am setting a plumb line among my people Israel; I will no longer spare them:

He asked me, “What do you see, Amos? ”

I replied, “A basket of summer fruit.”[fn]

The LORD said to me, “The end has come for my people Israel; I will no longer spare them.

And I said, “I have been banished

from your sight,

yet I will look[fn] once more

toward your holy temple.”

I said: You will certainly fear me

and accept correction.

Then her dwelling place[fn]

would not be cut off

based on all that I had allocated to her.

However, they became more corrupt

in all their actions.

I asked, “What are these, my lord? ”

The angel who was talking to me replied, “I will show you what they are.”

So I asked the angel who was speaking with me, “What are these? ”

And he said to me, “These are the horns that scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.”

I asked, “What are they coming to do? ”

He replied, “These are the horns that scattered Judah so no one could raise his head. These craftsmen have come to terrify them, to cut off[fn] the horns of the nations that raised a horn against the land of Judah to scatter it.”

I asked, “Where are you going? ”

He answered me, “To measure Jerusalem to determine its width and length.”

He asked me, “What do you see? ”

I replied, “I see a solid gold lampstand with a bowl at the top. The lampstand also has seven lamps at the top with seven spouts for each of[fn] the lamps.

“Don't you know what they are? ” replied the angel who was speaking with me.

I said, “No, my lord.”

I asked him, “What are the two olive trees on the right and left of the lampstand? ”

“What do you see? ” he asked me.

“I see a flying scroll,” I replied, “thirty feet[fn] long and fifteen feet[fn] wide.”

So I asked, “What is it? ”

He responded, “It's a measuring basket[fn] that is approaching.” And he continued, “This is their iniquity[fn] in all the land.”

So I asked the angel who was speaking with me, “Where are they taking the basket? ”

So I inquired of the angel who was speaking with me, “What are these, my lord? ”

Then I said, “I will no longer shepherd you. Let what is dying die, and let what is perishing perish; let the rest devour each other's flesh.”
