“When an unclean spirit comes out of a person, it roams through waterless places looking for rest but doesn't find any.

“It must not be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you must be your servant,

Going a little farther,[fn] he fell facedown and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

but they could not find any, even though many false witnesses came forward.[fn] Finally, two[fn] who came forward

They were astonished at his teaching because he was teaching them as one who had authority, and not like the scribes.

Then he told them, “The Sabbath was made for[fn] man and not man for the Sabbath.

“But it is not so among you. On the contrary, whoever wants to become great among you will be your servant,

The chief priests and the whole Sanhedrin were looking for testimony against Jesus to put him to death, but they could not find any.

And he told this parable: “A man had a fig tree that was planted in his vineyard. He came looking for fruit on it and found none.

“Didn't any return to give glory to God except this foreigner? ”

but they could not find a way to do it, because all the people were captivated by what they heard.

“It is not to be like that among you. On the contrary, whoever is greatest among you should become like the youngest, and whoever leads, like the one serving.

They went in but did not find the body of the Lord Jesus.

“I sent you to reap what you didn't labor for; others have labored, and you have benefited from[fn] their labor.”

Jesus answered, “Truly I tell you, you are looking for me, not because you saw[fn] the signs, but because you ate the loaves and were filled.

“For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will, but the will of him who sent me.

“not that anyone has seen the Father except the one who is from God. He has seen the Father.

“This is why Moses has given you circumcision ​— ​not that it comes from Moses but from the fathers ​— ​and you circumcise a man on the Sabbath.

“You will look for me, but you will not find me; and where I am, you cannot come.”

“I give them eternal life, and they will never perish. No one will snatch them out of my hand.

and not for the nation only, but also to unite the scattered children of God.

He didn't say this because he cared about the poor but because he was a thief. He was in charge of the money-bag and would steal part of what was put in it.

Nevertheless, many did believe in him even among the rulers, but because of the Pharisees they did not confess him, so that they would not be banned from the synagogue.

Judas (not Iscariot) said to him, “Lord, how is it you're going to reveal yourself to us and not to the world? ”

“You did not choose me, but I chose you. I appointed you to go and produce fruit and that your fruit should remain, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he will give you.

When the chief priests and the temple servants[fn] saw him, they shouted, “Crucify! Crucify! ”

Pilate responded, “Take him and crucify him yourselves, since I find no grounds for charging him.”

He said to them, “It is not for you to know times or periods that the Father has set by his own authority.

But Peter said, “I don't have silver or gold, but what I do have, I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, get up and walk! ”

But when the servants[fn] got there, they did not find them in the jail; so they returned and reported,

“Now a famine and great suffering came over all of Egypt and Canaan, and our ancestors could find no food.

“but the Most High does not dwell in sanctuaries made with hands, as the prophet says:

“Because the Jews objected, I was compelled to appeal to Caesar; even though I had no charge to bring against my people.

For though they knew God, they did not glorify him as God or show gratitude. Instead, their thinking became worthless, and their senseless hearts were darkened.

But the gift is not like the trespass. For if by the one man's trespass the many died, how much more have the grace of God and the gift which comes through the grace of the one man Jesus Christ overflowed to the many.

The mindset of the flesh is hostile to God because it does not submit to God's law. Indeed, it is unable to do so.

For the creation was subjected to futility ​— ​not willingly, but because of him who subjected it ​— ​in the hope

Now it is not as though the word of God has failed, because not all who are descended from Israel are Israel.

Since they are ignorant of the righteousness of God and attempted to establish their own righteousness, they have not submitted to God's righteousness.

For even Christ did not please himself. On the contrary, as it is written, The insults of those who insult you have fallen on me.

My aim is to preach the gospel where Christ has not been named, so that I will not build on someone else's foundation,

no thieves, greedy people, drunkards, verbally abusive people, or swindlers will inherit God's kingdom.

But I (not the Lord) say to the rest: If any brother has an unbelieving wife and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her.

However, if you do get married, you have not sinned, and if a virgin[fn] marries, she has not sinned. But such people will have trouble in this life,[fn] and I am trying to spare you.

I am saying this for your own benefit, not to put a restraint on you, but to promote what is proper and so that you may be devoted to the Lord without distraction.

I do not mean that we lord it over your faith, but we are workers with you for your joy, because you stand firm in your faith.

For I wrote to you with many tears out of an extremely troubled and anguished heart ​— ​not to cause you pain, but that you should know the abundant love I have for you.

It is not that we are competent in[fn] ourselves to claim anything as coming from ourselves, but our adequacy is from God.

I now rejoice, not because you were grieved, but because your grief led to repentance. For you were grieved as God willed, so that you didn't experience any loss from us.

So even though I wrote to you, it was not because of the one who did wrong, or because of the one who was wronged, but in order that your devotion to us might be made plain to you in the sight of God.

For I fear that perhaps when I come I will not find you to be what I want, and you may not find me to be what you want. Perhaps there will be quarreling, jealousy, angry outbursts, selfish ambitions, slander, gossip, arrogance, and disorder.

But we pray to God that you do nothing wrong ​— ​not that we may appear to pass the test, but that you may do what is right, even though we may appear to fail.

But that is not how you came to know Christ,

the others proclaim Christ out of selfish ambition, not sincerely, thinking that they will cause me trouble in my imprisonment.

who, existing in the form of God,

did not consider equality with God

as something to be exploited.[fn]

Not that I have already reached the goal or am already perfect, but I make every effort to take hold of it because I also have been taken hold of by Christ Jesus.

I don't say this out of need, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I find myself.

Not that I seek the gift, but I seek the profit[fn] that is increasing to your account.

For I want you to know how greatly I am struggling for you, for those in Laodicea, and for all who have not seen me in person.

Instead, just as we have been approved by God to be entrusted with the gospel, so we speak, not to please people, but rather God, who examines our hearts.

It is not that we don't have the right to support, but we did it to make ourselves an example to you so that you would imitate us.

If anyone does not obey our instruction in this letter, take note of that person; don't associate with him, so that he may be ashamed.

No one takes this honor on himself; instead, a person is called by God, just as Aaron was.

By faith Enoch was taken away, and so he did not experience death. He was not to be found because God took him away. For before he was taken away, he was approved as one who pleased God.

But if you are without discipline ​— ​which all receive[fn] ​— ​then you are illegitimate children and not sons.

For you know that later, when he wanted to inherit the blessing, he was rejected, even though he sought it with tears, because he didn't find any opportunity for repentance.

It was revealed to them that they were not serving themselves but you. These things have now been announced to you through those who preached the gospel to you by the Holy Spirit sent from heaven ​— ​angels long to catch a glimpse of these things.

Don't let your beauty consist of outward things like elaborate hairstyles and wearing gold jewelry or fine clothes,

If we say, “We have not sinned,” we make him a liar, and his word is not in us.

Everyone who remains in him does not sin;[fn] everyone who sins[fn] has not seen him or known him.

Love consists in this: not that we loved God, but that he loved us and sent his Son to be the atoning sacrifice[fn] for our sins.

If anyone says, “I love God,” and yet hates his brother or sister, he is a liar. For the person who does not love his brother or sister whom he has seen cannot love God whom he has not seen.[fn]

We know that everyone who has been born of God does not sin, but the one who is born of God keeps him,[fn] and the evil one does not touch him.

So now I ask you, dear lady ​— ​not as if I were writing you a new command, but one we have had from the beginning ​— ​that we love one another.

Dear friend, do not imitate what is evil, but what is good. The one who does good is of God; the one who does evil has not seen God.

No lie was found in their mouths; they are blameless.

Every island fled, and the mountains disappeared.

Then I saw a great white throne and one seated on it. Earth and heaven fled from his presence, and no place was found for them.

And anyone whose name was not found written in the book of life was thrown into the lake of fire.

“Consider the birds of the sky: They don't sow or reap or gather into barns, yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Aren't you worth more than they?

“Isn't this the carpenter's son? Isn't his mother called Mary, and his brothers James, Joseph,[fn] Simon, and Judas?

He also said to them, “Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket or under a bed? Isn't it to be put on a lampstand?

“Isn't this the carpenter, the son of Mary, and the brother of James, Joses, Judas, and Simon? And aren't his sisters here with us? ” So they were offended by him.

“Fools! Didn't he who made the outside make the inside too?

“Don't you say, ‘There are still four more months, and then comes the harvest'? Listen to what I'm telling you: Open[fn] your eyes and look at the fields, because they are ready[fn] for harvest.

They were saying, “Isn't this Jesus the son of Joseph, whose father and mother we know? How can he now say, ‘I have come down from heaven'? ”

Some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, “Isn't this the man they are trying to kill?

“Doesn't the Scripture say that the Messiah comes from David's offspring[fn] and from the town of Bethlehem, where David lived? ”

His neighbors and those who had seen him before as a beggar said, “Isn't this the one who used to sit begging? ”

They were astounded and amazed, saying,[fn] “Look, aren't all these who are speaking Galileans?

All who heard him were astounded and said, “Isn't this the man in Jerusalem who was causing havoc for those who called on this name and came here for the purpose of taking them as prisoners to the chief priests? ”

So if an uncircumcised man keeps the law's requirements, will not his uncircumcision be counted as circumcision?

Consider the people of Israel.[fn] Do not those who eat the sacrifices participate in the altar?

Listen, my dear brothers and sisters: Didn't God choose the poor in this world to be rich in faith and heirs of the kingdom that he has promised to those who love him?
