So he assembled all the chief priests and scribes of the people and asked them where the Messiah would be born.
Then Herod secretly summoned the wise men and asked them the exact time the star appeared.
Hearing this, Jesus was amazed and said to those following him, “Truly I tell you, I have not found anyone in Israel with so great a faith.
“Now there were seven brothers among us. The first got married and died. Having no offspring, he left his wife to his brother.
When his family heard this, they set out to restrain him, because they said, “He's out of his mind.”
had endured much under many doctors. She had spent everything she had and was not helped at all. On the contrary, she became worse.
The Pharisees came and began to argue with him, demanding of him a sign from heaven to test him.
[Early on the first day of the week, after he had risen, he appeared first to Mary Magdalene, out of whom he had driven seven demons.
The whole crowd was trying to touch him, because power was coming out from him and healing them all.
“And if you lend to those from whom you expect to receive, what credit is that to you? Even sinners lend to sinners to be repaid in full.
But Jesus, knowing their inner thoughts,[fn] took a little child and had him stand next to him.
“Remain in the same house, eating and drinking what they offer, for the worker is worthy of his wages. Don't move from house to house.
As he was speaking, a Pharisee asked him to dine with him. So he went in and reclined at the table.
“But the one who did not know and did what deserved punishment will receive a light beating. From everyone who has been given much, much will be required; and from the one who has been entrusted with much, even more will be expected.[fn]
“I tell you, this one went down to his house justified rather than the other, because everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, but the one who humbles himself will be exalted.”
“Come and you'll see,” he replied. So they went and saw where he was staying, and they stayed with him that day. It was about four in the afternoon.[fn]
So when the Samaritans came to him, they asked him to stay with them, and he stayed there two days.
He asked them at what time he got better. “Yesterday at one in the afternoon[fn] the fever left him,” they answered.
“Our law doesn't judge a man before it hears from him and knows what he's doing, does it? ”
“I have many things to say and to judge about you, but the one who sent me is true, and what I have heard from him — these things I tell the world.”
“He is the Spirit of truth. The world is unable to receive him because it doesn't see him or know him. But you do know him, because he remains with you and will be[fn] in you.
Jesus answered, “If anyone loves me, he will keep my word. My Father will love him, and we will come to him and make our home with him.
and requested letters from him to the synagogues in Damascus, so that if he found any men or women who belonged to the Way, he might bring them as prisoners to Jerusalem.
and since they were of the same occupation, tentmakers by trade, he stayed with them and worked.
When we completed our voyage[fn] from Tyre, we reached Ptolemais, where we greeted the brothers and sisters and stayed with them for a day.
The next day we left and came to Caesarea, where we entered the house of Philip the evangelist, who was one of the Seven, and stayed with him.
Some of the disciples from Caesarea also went with us and brought us to Mnason of Cyprus, an early disciple, with whom we were to stay.
“as both the high priest and the whole council of elders can testify about me. After I received letters from them to the brothers, I traveled to Damascus to arrest those who were there and bring them to Jerusalem to be punished.
“By examining him yourself you will be able to discern the truth about these charges we are bringing against him.”
There we found brothers and sisters and were invited to stay a week with them. And so we came to Rome.
He believed, hoping against hope, so that he became the father of many nations according to what had been spoken: So will your descendants be.
I don't want you to be ignorant of this mystery, brothers and sisters, so that you will not be conceited: A partial hardening has come upon Israel until the fullness of the Gentiles has come in.
For by the grace given to me, I tell everyone among you not to think of himself more highly than he should think. Instead, think sensibly, as God has distributed a measure of faith to each one.
Live in harmony with one another. Do not be proud; instead, associate with the humble. Do not be wise in your own estimation.
One person judges one day to be more important than another day. Someone else judges every day to be the same. Let each one be fully convinced in his own mind.
On the first day of the week, each of you is to set something aside and save in keeping with how he is prospering, so that no collections will need to be made when I come.
Now when I planned this, was I of two minds? Or what I plan, do I plan in a purely human[fn] way so that I say “Yes, yes” and “No, no” at the same time?
But even if we or an angel from heaven should preach to you a gospel contrary to what we have preached to you, a curse be on him![fn]
As we have said before, I now say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, a curse be on him!
And masters, treat your slaves the same way, without threatening them, because you know that both their Master and yours is in heaven, and there is no favoritism with him.
But I have received everything in full, and I have an abundance. I am fully supplied,[fn] having received from Epaphroditus what you provided — a fragrant offering, an acceptable sacrifice, pleasing to God.
After this letter has been read at your gathering, have it read also in the church of the Laodiceans; and see that you also read the letter from Laodicea.
This is why we constantly thank God, because when you received the word of God that you heard from us, you welcomed it not as a human message, but as it truly is, the word of God, which also works effectively in you who believe.
Additionally then, brothers and sisters, we ask and encourage you in the Lord Jesus, that as you have received instruction from us on how you should live and please God — as you are doing[fn] — do this even more.
Now we command you, brothers and sisters, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, to keep away from every brother or sister who is idle and does not live[fn] according to the tradition received from us.
Hold on to the pattern of sound teaching that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
What you have heard from me in the presence of many witnesses, commit to faithful men[fn] who will be able to teach others also.
So he became superior to the angels, just as the name he inherited is more excellent than theirs.
But we do see Jesus — made lower than the angels for a short time so that by God's grace he might taste death for everyone — crowned with glory and honor because he suffered death.
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
