“For if you love those who love you, what reward will you have? Don't even the tax collectors do the same?

“Be careful not to practice your righteousness[fn] in front of others to be seen by them. Otherwise, you have no reward with your Father in heaven.

“Don't be like them, because your Father knows the things you need before you ask him.

“How many loaves do you have? ” Jesus asked them.

“Seven,” they said, “and a few small fish.”

“You always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.

Then he said to them, “Why are you afraid? Do you still have no faith? ”

He asked them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.”

When they found out they said, “Five, and two fish.”

“How many loaves do you have? ” he asked them.

“Seven,” they said.

Aware of this, he said to them, “Why are you discussing the fact you have no bread? Don't you understand or comprehend? Do you have hardened hearts?

“And whenever you stand praying, if you have anything against anyone, forgive him, so that your Father in heaven will also forgive you your wrongdoing.”[fn]

“You always have the poor with you, and you can do what is good for them whenever you want, but you do not always have me.

“You don't have his word residing in you, because you don't believe the one he sent.

“but I know you ​— ​that you have no love for God within you.

So Jesus said to them, “Truly I tell you, unless you eat the flesh of the Son of Man and drink his blood, you do not have life in yourselves.

“For you always have the poor with you, but you do not always have me.”

Jesus answered, “The light will be with you only a little longer. Walk while you have the light so that darkness doesn't overtake you. The one who walks in darkness doesn't know where he's going.

“So you also have sorrow[fn] now. But I will see you again. Your hearts will rejoice, and no one will take away your joy from you.

“I have told you these things so that in me you may have peace. You will have suffering in this world. Be courageous! I have conquered the world.”

“Friends,”[fn] Jesus called to them, “you don't have any fish, do you? ”

“No,” they answered.

But now, since you have been set free from sin and have become enslaved to God, you have your fruit, which results in sanctification ​— ​and the outcome is eternal life!

As it is, to have legal disputes against one another is already a defeat for you. Why not rather be wronged? Why not rather be cheated?

Don't you know that your body is a temple of the Holy Spirit who is in you, whom you have from God? You are not your own,

Don't you have homes in which to eat and drink? Or do you despise the church of God and humiliate those who have nothing? What should I say to you? Should I praise you? I do not praise you in this matter!

Join in imitating me, brothers and sisters, and pay careful attention to those who live according to the example you have in us.

Masters, deal with your slaves justly and fairly, since you know that you too have a Master in heaven.

But now Timothy has come to us from you and brought us good news about your faith and love. He reported that you always have good memories of us and that you long to see us, as we also long to see you.

About brotherly love: You don't need me to write you because you yourselves are taught by God to love one another.

About the times and the seasons: Brothers and sisters, you do not need anything to be written to you.

Although by this time you ought to be teachers, you need someone to teach you the basic principles of God's revelation again. You need milk, not solid food.

For you need endurance, so that after you have done God's will, you may receive what was promised.

But if you have bitter envy and selfish ambition in your heart, don't boast and deny the truth.

You desire and do not have. You murder and covet and cannot obtain. You fight and wage war.[fn] You do not have because you do not ask.

But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and all of you know the truth.[fn]

As for you, the anointing you received from him remains in you, and you don't need anyone to teach you. Instead, his anointing teaches you about all things and is true and is not a lie; just as it has taught you,[fn] remain in him.

I have written these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God so that you may know that you have eternal life.

Only hold on to what you have until I come.

“Salt is good, but if the salt should lose its flavor, how can you season it? Have salt among yourselves, and be at peace with one another.”

Therefore, welcome him in the Lord with great joy and hold people like him in honor,

My brothers and sisters, do not show favoritism as you hold on to the faith in our glorious Lord Jesus Christ.
