But John tried to stop him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you come to me? ”

Jesus replied to him, “Simon, I have something to say to you.”

He said, “Say it, teacher.”

“because a friend of mine on a journey has come to me, and I don't have anything to offer him.'

“He thought to himself, ‘What should I do, since I don't have anywhere to store my crops?

“But I have a baptism to undergo, and how it consumes me until it is finished!

“But without exception[fn] they all began to make excuses. The first one said to him, ‘I have bought a field, and I must go out and see it. I ask you to excuse me.'

“because I have five brothers ​— ​to warn them, so that they won't also come to this place of torment.'

“I don't have a husband,” she answered.

“You have correctly said, ‘I don't have a husband,' ” Jesus said.

But he said, “I have food to eat that you don't know about.”

“Sir,” the disabled man answered, “I have no one to put me into the pool when the water is stirred up, but while I'm coming, someone goes down ahead of me.”

“But I have a greater testimony than John's because of the works that the Father has given me to accomplish. These very works I am doing testify about me that the Father has sent me.

“I have many things to say and to judge about you, but the one who sent me is true, and what I have heard from him ​— ​these things I tell the world.”

“I do not have a demon,” Jesus answered. “On the contrary, I honor my Father and you dishonor me.

“But I have other sheep that are not from this sheep pen; I must bring them also, and they will listen to my voice. Then there will be one flock, one shepherd.

“No one takes it from me, but I lay it down on my own. I have the right to lay it down, and I have the right to take it up again. I have received this command from my Father.”

“I still have many things to tell you, but you can't bear them now.

So Pilate said to him, “Do you refuse to speak to me? Don't you know that I have the authority to release you and the authority to crucify you? ”

But Peter said, “I don't have silver or gold, but what I do have, I give you: In the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, get up and walk! ”

“But I consider my life of no value to myself; my purpose is to finish my course[fn] and the ministry I received from the Lord Jesus, to testify to the gospel of God's grace.

Then Paul replied, “What are you doing, weeping and breaking my heart? For I am ready not only to be bound but also to die in Jerusalem for the name of the Lord Jesus.”

“I have nothing definite to write to my lord about him. Therefore, I have brought him before all of you, and especially before you, King Agrippa, so that after this examination is over, I may have something to write.

Therefore I have reason to boast in Christ Jesus regarding what pertains to God.

Now about virgins:[fn] I have no command from the Lord, but I do give an opinion as one who by the Lord's mercy is faithful.

For if I do this willingly, I have a reward, but if unwillingly, I am entrusted with a commission.

The eye cannot say to the hand, “I don't need you! ” Or again, the head can't say to the feet, “I don't need you! ”

I face death every day, as surely as I may boast about you, brothers and sisters, in Christ Jesus our Lord.

For I wrote to you with many tears out of an extremely troubled and anguished heart ​— ​not to cause you pain, but that you should know the abundant love I have for you.

Look, I am ready to come to you this third time. I will not burden you, since I am not seeking what is yours, but you. For children ought not save up for their parents, but parents for their children.

For I have no one else like-minded who will genuinely care about your interests;

For I want you to know how greatly I am struggling for you, for those in Laodicea, and for all who have not seen me in person.

I give thanks to Christ Jesus our Lord who has strengthened me, because he considered me faithful, appointing me to the ministry ​— ​

I thank God, whom I serve with a clear conscience as my ancestors did, when I constantly remember you in my prayers night and day.

But someone will say, “You have faith, and I have works.”[fn] Show me your faith without works, and I will show you faith by my works.

I have no greater joy than this: to hear that my children are walking in truth.

“and the Living One. I was dead, but look ​— ​I am alive forever and ever, and I hold the keys of death and Hades.

“But I have this against you: You have abandoned the love you had at first.

“But I have a few things against you. You have some there who hold to the teaching of Balaam, who taught Balak to place a stumbling block[fn] in front of the Israelites: to eat meat sacrificed to idols and to commit sexual immorality.

“But I have this against you: You tolerate the woman Jezebel, who calls herself a prophetess and teaches and deceives my servants to commit sexual immorality and to eat meat sacrificed to idols.

“For you say, ‘I'm rich; I have become wealthy and need nothing,' and you don't realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked.

Just then someone came up and asked him, “Teacher, what good must I do to have eternal life? ”

If I speak human or angelic tongues[fn] but do not have love, I am a noisy gong or a clanging cymbal.

I wrote this very thing so that when I came I wouldn't have pain from those who ought to give me joy, because I am confident about all of you that my joy will also be yours.
