“and stay with him for a few days until your brother's anger subsides ​— ​

“You will bear the consequences of your iniquities forty years based on the number of the forty days that you scouted the land, a year for each day.[fn] You will know my displeasure.[fn]

Because of the LORD's anger, it came to the point in Jerusalem and Judah that he finally banished them from his presence. Then Zedekiah rebelled against the king of Babylon.

“Don't become obstinate[fn] now like your ancestors did. Give your allegiance[fn] to the LORD, and come to his sanctuary that he has consecrated forever. Serve the LORD your God so that he may turn his burning anger away from you,

There the wicked cease to make trouble,

and there the weary find rest.

as you turn your anger[fn] against God

and allow such words to leave your mouth?

He will suck the poison of cobras;

a viper's fangs[fn] will kill him.

When he fills his stomach,

God will send his burning anger against him,

raining it down on him while he is eating.[fn]

But you yourself have seen trouble and grief,

observing it in order to take the matter into your hands.

The helpless one entrusts himself to you;

you are a helper of the fatherless.

Yet he was compassionate;

he atoned for their iniquity

and did not destroy them.

He often turned his anger aside

and did not unleash[fn] all his wrath.

He sent his burning anger against them:

fury, indignation, and calamity —

a band of deadly messengers.[fn]

then they would have swallowed us alive

in their burning anger against us.

A person's spirit can endure sickness,

but who can survive a broken spirit?

A secret gift soothes anger,

and a covert bribe, fierce rage.

or the LORD will see, be displeased,

and turn his wrath away from him.

A fool gives full vent to his anger,[fn]

but a wise person holds it in check.

Remove sorrow from your heart,

and put away pain from your flesh,

because youth and the prime of life are fleeting.

The land is scorched

by the wrath of the LORD of Armies,

and the people are like fuel for the fire.

No one has compassion on his brother.

Therefore I will make the heavens tremble,

and the earth will shake from its foundations

at the wrath of the LORD of Armies,

on the day of his burning anger.

And the LORD will make the splendor of his voice heard

and reveal his arm striking in angry wrath

and a flame of consuming fire,

in driving rain, a torrent, and hailstones.

He has strung his bow like an enemy;

his right hand is positioned like an adversary.

He has killed everyone who was the delight to the eye,

pouring out his wrath like fire

on the tent of Daughter Zion.

The LORD has exhausted his wrath,

poured out his burning anger;

he has ignited a fire in Zion,

and it has consumed her foundations.

“In order to stir up wrath and take vengeance,

I have put her blood on the bare rock,

so that it would not be covered.

Do horses gallop on the cliffs?

Does anyone plow there with oxen?[fn]

Yet you have turned justice into poison

and the fruit of righteousness into wormwood —
