God blessed them: “Be fruitful, multiply, and fill the waters of the seas, and let the birds multiply on the earth.”
God blessed them, and God said to them, “Be fruitful, multiply, fill the earth, and subdue it. Rule the fish of the sea, the birds of the sky, and every creature that crawls on the earth.”
And the LORD God commanded the man, “You are free to eat from any tree of the garden,
And he named him Noah,[fn] saying, “This one will bring us relief from the agonizing labor of our hands, caused by the ground the LORD has cursed.”
After these events, the word of the LORD came to Abram in a vision:
Do not be afraid, Abram.
I am your shield;
your reward will be very great.
Now the word of the LORD came to him: “This one will not be your heir; instead, one who comes from your own body[fn] will be your heir.”
On that day the LORD made a covenant with Abram, saying, “I give this land to your offspring, from the Brook of Egypt to the great river, the Euphrates River:
Abraham fell facedown. Then he laughed and said to himself, “Can a child be born to a hundred-year-old man? Can Sarah, a ninety-year-old woman, give birth? ”
At that time Abimelech, accompanied by Phicol the commander of his army, said to Abraham, “God is with you in everything you do.
Then Isaac spoke to his father Abraham and said, “My father.”
And he replied, “Here I am, my son.”
Isaac said, “The fire and the wood are here, but where is the lamb for the burnt offering? ”
and said, “By myself I have sworn,” this is the LORD's declaration: “Because you have done this thing and have not withheld your only son,
He said to them, “If you are willing for me to bury my dead, listen to me and ask Ephron son of Zohar on my behalf
Ephron was sitting among the Hethites. So in the hearing[fn] of all the Hethites who came to the gate of his city, Ephron the Hethite answered Abraham:
“The LORD, the God of heaven, who took me from my father's house and from my native land, who spoke to me and swore to me, ‘I will give this land to your offspring'[fn] — he will send his angel before you, and you can take a wife for my son from there.
“My master put me under this oath: ‘You will not take a wife for my son from the daughters of the Canaanites in whose land I live
So Abimelech warned all the people, “Whoever harms this man or his wife will certainly be put to death.”
He moved from there and dug another, and they did not quarrel over it. He named it Rehoboth[fn] and said, “For now the LORD has made space for us, and we will be fruitful in the land.”
So Isaac summoned Jacob, blessed him, and commanded him, “Do not marry a Canaanite girl.
Esau noticed that Isaac blessed Jacob and sent him to Paddan-aram to get a wife there. When he blessed him, Isaac commanded Jacob, “Do not marry a Canaanite girl.”
Then Jacob made a vow: “If God will be with me and watch over me during this journey I'm making, if he provides me with food to eat and clothing to wear,
“I could do you great harm, but last night the God of your father said to me, ‘Watch yourself! Don't say anything to Jacob, either good or bad.'
He commanded them, “You are to say to my lord Esau, ‘This is what your servant Jacob says. I have been staying with Laban and have been delayed until now.
And he told the first one, “When my brother Esau meets you and asks, ‘Who do you belong to? Where are you going? And whose animals are these ahead of you? '
He also told the second one, the third, and everyone who was walking behind the animals, “Say the same thing to Esau when you find him.
Hamor said to Jacob's sons, “My son Shechem has his heart set on your[fn] daughter. Please give her to him as a wife.
A man found him there, wandering in the field, and asked him, “What are you looking for? ”
All his sons and daughters tried to comfort him, but he refused to be comforted. “No,” he said. “I will go down to Sheol to my son, mourning.” And his father wept for him.
she called her household servants. “Look,” she said to them, “my husband brought a Hebrew man to make fools of us. He came to me so he could sleep with me, and I screamed as loud as I could.
So he asked Pharaoh's officers who were in custody with him in his master's house, “Why do you look so sad today? ”
But Reuben replied, “Didn't I tell you not to harm the boy? But you wouldn't listen. Now we must account for his blood! ”[fn]
Then Reuben said to his father, “You can kill my two sons if I don't bring him back to you. Put him in my care,[fn] and I will return him to you.”
But Judah said to him, “The man specifically warned us, ‘You will not see me again unless your brother is with you.'
“But if you will not send him, we will not go, for the man said to us, ‘You will not see me again unless your brother is with you.' ”
They answered, “The man kept asking about us and our family: ‘Is your father still alive? Do you have another brother? ' And we answered him accordingly. How could we know that he would say, ‘Bring your brother here'? ”
Joseph commanded his steward, “Fill the men's bags with as much food as they can carry, and put each one's silver at the top of his bag.
“Your servant became accountable to my father for the boy, saying, ‘If I do not return him to you, I will always bear the guilt for sinning against you, my father.'
God said, “I am God, the God of your father. Do not be afraid to go down to Egypt, for I will make you into a great nation there.
So Joseph went and informed Pharaoh: “My father and my brothers, with their flocks and herds and all that they own, have come from the land of Canaan and are now in the land of Goshen.”
So he blessed them that day, putting Ephraim before Manasseh when he said, “The nation Israel will invoke blessings by you, saying, ‘May God make you like Ephraim and Manasseh.' ”
When the days of mourning were over, Joseph said to Pharaoh's household, “If I have found favor with you, please tell Pharaoh that
“my father made me take an oath, saying, ‘I am about to die. You must bury me there in the tomb that I made for myself in the land of Canaan.' Now let me go and bury my father. Then I will return.”
Joseph said to his brothers, “I am about to die, but God will certainly come to your aid and bring you up from this land to the land he swore to give to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob.”
So Joseph made the sons of Israel take an oath: “When God comes to your aid, you are to carry my bones up from here.”
Pharaoh then commanded all his people, “You must throw every son born to the Hebrews into the Nile, but let every daughter live.”
She gave birth to a son whom he named Gershom,[fn] for he said, “I have been a resident alien in a foreign land.”
When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look, God called out to him from the bush, “Moses, Moses! ”
“Here I am,” he answered.
He answered, “I will certainly be with you, and this will be the sign to you that I am the one who sent you: when you bring the people out of Egypt, you will all worship[fn] God at this mountain.”
“Go and assemble the elders of Israel and say to them: The LORD, the God of your ancestors, the God of Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, has appeared to me and said: I have paid close attention to you and to what has been done to you in Egypt.
“Therefore tell the Israelites: I am the LORD, and I will bring you out from the forced labor of the Egyptians and rescue you from slavery to them. I will redeem you with an outstretched arm and great acts of judgment.
But Moses said in the LORD's presence, “If the Israelites will not listen to me, then how will Pharaoh listen to me, since I am such a poor speaker? ”[fn]
he said to him, “I am the LORD; tell Pharaoh king of Egypt everything I am telling you.”
The LORD answered Moses, “See, I have made you like God to Pharaoh, and Aaron your brother will be your prophet.
“When Pharaoh tells you, ‘Perform a miracle,' tell Aaron, ‘Take your staff and throw it down before Pharaoh. It will become a serpent.' ”
“Tell him: The LORD, the God of the Hebrews, has sent me to tell you: Let my people go, so that they may worship[fn] me in the wilderness. But so far you have not listened.
Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Go sacrifice to your God within the country.”
Then the LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “Take handfuls of furnace soot, and Moses is to throw it toward heaven in the sight of Pharaoh.
Then the LORD said to Moses, “Go to Pharaoh, for I have hardened his heart and the hearts of his officials so that I may do these miraculous signs of mine among them,[fn]
Pharaoh urgently sent for Moses and Aaron and said, “I have sinned against the LORD your God and against you.
Pharaoh summoned Moses and said, “Go, worship the LORD. Even your families may go with you; only your flocks and herds must stay behind.”
“Tell the whole community of Israel that on the tenth day of this month they must each select an animal of the flock according to their fathers' families, one animal per family.
The LORD said to Moses and Aaron, “This is the statute of the Passover: no foreigner may eat it.
“On that day explain to your son, ‘This is because of what the LORD did for me when I came out of Egypt.'
“In the future, when your son asks you, ‘What does this mean? ' say to him, ‘By the strength of his hand the LORD brought us out of Egypt, out of the place of slavery.
Moses took the bones of Joseph with him, because Joseph had made the Israelites swear a solemn oath, saying, “God will certainly come to your aid; then you must take my bones with you from this place.”
“I have heard the complaints of the Israelites. Tell them: At twilight you will eat meat, and in the morning you will eat bread until you are full. Then you will know that I am the LORD your God.”
Then Moses cried out to the LORD, “What should I do with these people? In a little while they will stone me! ”
along with her two sons, one of whom was named Gershom[fn] (because Moses had said, “I have been a resident alien in a foreign land”)
and the other Eliezer (because he had said, “The God of my father was my helper and rescued me from Pharaoh's sword”).[fn]
Moses went up the mountain to God, and the LORD called to him from the mountain: “This is what you must say to the house of Jacob and explain to the Israelites:
“Put boundaries for the people all around the mountain and say: Be careful that you don't go up on the mountain or touch its base. Anyone who touches the mountain must be put to death.
The LORD directed Moses, “Go down and warn the people not to break through to see the LORD; otherwise many of them will die.
Moses responded to the LORD, “The people cannot come up Mount Sinai, since you warned us: Put a boundary around the mountain and consecrate it.”
“Tell the Israelites: This will be my holy anointing oil throughout your generations.
“Tell the Israelites: You must observe my Sabbaths, for it is a sign between me and you throughout your generations, so that you will know that I am the LORD who consecrates you.
When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of it and made an announcement: “There will be a festival to the LORD tomorrow.”
The LORD spoke to Moses: “Go down at once! For your people you brought up from the land of Egypt have acted corruptly.
“Remember your servants Abraham, Isaac, and Israel — you swore to them by yourself and declared, ‘I will make your offspring as numerous as the stars of the sky and will give your offspring all this land that I have promised, and they will inherit it forever.' ”
The LORD spoke to Moses: “Go up from here, you and the people you brought up from the land of Egypt, to the land I promised to Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, saying: I will give it to your offspring.
Then Moses said to the entire Israelite community, “This is what the LORD has commanded:
After Moses gave an order, they sent a proclamation throughout the camp: “Let no man or woman make anything else as an offering for the sanctuary.” So the people stopped.
“Tell the Israelites: When someone sins unintentionally against any of the LORD's commands and does anything prohibited by them —
“Command Aaron and his sons: This is the law of the burnt offering; the burnt offering itself must remain on the altar's hearth all night until morning, while the fire of the altar is kept burning on it.
“Tell Aaron and his sons: This is the law of the sin offering. The sin offering is most holy and must be slaughtered before the LORD at the place where the burnt offering is slaughtered.
“Tell the Israelites: The one who presents a fellowship sacrifice to the LORD is to bring an offering to the LORD from his sacrifice.
Moses said to Aaron and his sons, “Boil the meat at the entrance to the tent of meeting and eat it there with the bread that is in the basket for the ordination offering as I commanded:[fn] Aaron and his sons are to eat it.
“And tell the Israelites:[fn] Take a male goat for a sin offering; a calf and a lamb, male yearlings without blemish, for a burnt offering;
Then Moses inquired carefully about the male goat of the sin offering, but it had already been burned up. He was angry with Eleazar and Ithamar, Aaron's surviving sons, and asked,
But Aaron replied to Moses, “See, today they presented their sin offering and their burnt offering before the LORD. Since these things have happened to me, if I had eaten the sin offering today, would it have been acceptable in the LORD's sight? ”
“the owner of the house is to come and tell the priest: Something like mildew contamination has appeared[fn] in my house.
“Speak to Aaron, his sons, and all the Israelites and tell them: This is what the LORD has commanded:
The LORD said to Moses, “Speak to Aaron's sons, the priests, and tell them: A priest is not to make himself ceremonially unclean for a dead person among his relatives,
“Tell the Israelites: In the seventh month, on the first day of the month, you are to have a day of complete rest, commemoration, and trumpet blasts — a sacred assembly.
“Tell the Israelites: The Festival of Shelters[fn] to the LORD begins on the fifteenth day of this seventh month and continues for seven days.
The LORD spoke to Moses in the tent of meeting in the Wilderness of Sinai, on the first day of the second month of the second year after Israel's departure from the land of Egypt:
The LORD told Moses, “Register every firstborn male of the Israelites one month old or more, and list their names.
“Tell the Israelites: When a man or woman commits any sin against another, that person acts unfaithfully toward the LORD and is guilty.
“Tell Aaron and his sons, ‘This is how you are to bless the Israelites. You should say to them,
In the first month of the second year after their departure from the land of Egypt, the LORD told Moses in the Wilderness of Sinai,
“Tell the Israelites: When any one of you or your descendants is unclean because of a corpse or is on a distant journey, he may still observe the Passover to the LORD.
A young man ran and reported to Moses, “Eldad and Medad are prophesying in the camp.”
Then the LORD told Moses, “The man is to be put to death. The entire community is to stone him outside the camp.”
Then he said to Korah and all his followers, “Tomorrow morning the LORD will reveal who belongs to him, who is set apart, and the one he will let come near him. He will let the one he chooses come near him.
He warned the community, “Get away now from the tents of these wicked men. Don't touch anything that belongs to them, or you will be swept away because of all their sins.”
The LORD said to Aaron, “You, your sons, and your ancestral family[fn] will be responsible for iniquity against the sanctuary. You and your sons will be responsible for iniquity involving your priesthood.
“This is the legal statute that the LORD has commanded: Instruct the Israelites to bring you an unblemished red cow that has no defect and has never been yoked.
Moses sent messengers from Kadesh to the king of Edom, “This is what your brother Israel says, ‘You know all the hardships that have overtaken us.
Balaam proclaimed his poem:
Balak brought me from Aram;
the king of Moab, from the eastern mountains:
“Come, put a curse on Jacob for me;
come, denounce Israel! ”
So Moses and the priest Eleazar said to them in the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho,
“Tell the Israelites: When a man dies without having a son, transfer his inheritance to his daughter.
The LORD replied to Moses, “Take Joshua son of Nun, a man who has the Spirit in him, and lay your hands on him.
“Command the Israelites and say to them: Be sure to present to me at its appointed time my offering and my food as my food offering, a pleasing aroma to me.
Moses told the leaders of the Israelite tribes, “This is what the LORD has commanded:
So Moses spoke to the people, “Equip some of your men for war. They will go against Midian to inflict the LORD's vengeance on them.
So Moses commanded the Israelites, “This is the land you are to receive by lot as an inheritance, which the LORD commanded to be given to the nine and a half tribes.
The LORD again spoke to Moses in the plains of Moab by the Jordan across from Jericho:
So Moses commanded the Israelites at the word of the LORD, “What the tribe of Joseph's descendants says is right.
“This is what the LORD has commanded concerning Zelophehad's daughters: They may marry anyone they like provided they marry within a clan of their ancestral tribe.
“The LORD our God spoke to us at Horeb: ‘You have stayed at this mountain long enough.
“I commanded your judges at that time: Hear the cases between your brothers, and judge rightly between a man and his brother or his resident alien.
“The LORD was angry with me also because of you and said, ‘You will not enter there either.
“Command the people: You are about to travel through the territory of your brothers, the descendants of Esau, who live in Seir. They will be afraid of you, so be very careful.
“So I sent messengers with an offer of peace to King Sihon of Heshbon from the Wilderness of Kedemoth, saying,
“I commanded you at that time: The LORD your God has given you this land to possess. All your valiant men will cross over in battle formation ahead of your brothers the Israelites.
“I commanded Joshua at that time: Your own eyes have seen everything the LORD your God has done to these two kings. The LORD will do the same to all the kingdoms you are about to enter.
“At that time I was standing between the LORD and you to report the word[fn] of the LORD to you, because you were afraid of the fire and did not go up the mountain. And he said:
“When your son asks you in the future, ‘What is the meaning of the decrees, statutes, and ordinances that the LORD our God has commanded you? '
“When the LORD your God drives them out before you, do not say to yourself, ‘The LORD brought me in to take possession of this land because of my righteousness.' Instead, the LORD will drive out these nations before you because of their wickedness.
“The LORD also said to me, ‘I have seen this people, and indeed, they are a stiff-necked people.
“When the LORD sent you from Kadesh-barnea, he said, ‘Go up and possess the land I have given you'; you rebelled against the command of the LORD your God. You did not believe or obey him.
“be careful not to be ensnared by their ways after they have been destroyed before you. Do not inquire about their gods, asking, ‘How did these nations worship their gods? I'll also do the same.'
“and that sign or wonder he has promised you comes about, but he says, ‘Let's follow other gods,' which you have not known, ‘and let's worship them,'
“If your brother, the son of your mother,[fn] or your son or daughter, or the wife you embrace, or your closest friend secretly entices you, saying, ‘Let's go and worship other gods' — which neither you nor your ancestors have known,
“Be careful that there isn't this wicked thought in your heart, ‘The seventh year, the year of canceling debts, is near,' and you are stingy toward your poor brother and give him nothing. He will cry out to the LORD against you, and you will be guilty.
“For there will never cease to be poor people in the land; that is why I am commanding you, ‘Open your hand willingly to your poor and needy brother in your land.'
“He has accused her of shameful conduct, saying, “I didn't find any evidence of your daughter's virginity,” but here is the evidence of my daughter's virginity.' They will spread out the cloth before the city elders.
Moses and the elders of Israel commanded the people, “Keep every command I am giving you today.
“When someone hears the words of this oath, he may consider himself exempt,[fn] thinking, ‘I will have peace even though I follow my own stubborn heart.' This will lead to the destruction of the well-watered land as well as the dry land.
“It is not in heaven so that you have to ask, ‘Who will go up to heaven, get it for us, and proclaim it to us so that we may follow it? '
“And it is not across the sea so that you have to ask, ‘Who will cross the sea, get it for us, and proclaim it to us so that we may follow it? '
Moses commanded them, “At the end of every seven years, at the appointed time in the year of debt cancellation, during the Festival of Shelters,
He said about his father and mother,
“I do not regard them.”
He disregarded his brothers
and didn't acknowledge his sons,
for they kept your word
and maintained your covenant.
The God of old is your dwelling place,
and underneath are the everlasting arms.
He drives out the enemy before you
and commands, “Destroy! ”
The LORD then said to him, “This is the land I promised Abraham, Isaac, and Jacob, ‘I will give it to your descendants.' I have let you see it with your own eyes, but you will not cross into it.”
After the death of Moses the LORD's servant, the LORD spoke to Joshua son of Nun, Moses's assistant:
“Remember what Moses the LORD's servant commanded you when he said, ‘The LORD your God will give you rest, and he will give you this land.'
Joshua son of Nun secretly sent two men as spies from the Acacia Grove,[fn] saying, “Go and scout the land, especially Jericho.” So they left, and they came to the house of a prostitute named Rahab, and stayed there.
Then the king of Jericho sent word to Rahab and said, “Bring out the men who came to you and entered your house, for they came to investigate the entire land.”
“Command the priests carrying the ark of the covenant: When you reach the edge of the water,[fn] stand in the Jordan.”
“and command them: Take twelve stones from this place in the middle of the Jordan where the priests[fn] are standing, carry them with you, and set them down at the place where you spend the night.”
“so that this will be a sign among you. In the future, when your children ask you, ‘What do these stones mean to you? '
“you should tell them, ‘The water of the Jordan was cut off in front of the ark of the LORD's covenant. When it crossed the Jordan, the Jordan's water was cut off.' Therefore these stones will always be a memorial for the Israelites.”
and he said to the Israelites, “In the future, when your children ask their fathers, ‘What is the meaning of these stones? '
He said to the troops, “Move forward, march around the city, and have the armed men go ahead of the ark of the LORD.”
But Joshua had commanded the troops, “Do not shout or let your voice be heard. Don't let one word come out of your mouth until the time I say, ‘Shout! ' Then you are to shout.”
At that time Joshua imposed this curse:
The man who undertakes
the rebuilding of this city, Jericho,
is cursed before the LORD.
He will lay its foundation
at the cost of his firstborn;
he will finish its gates
at the cost of his youngest.
Joshua sent men from Jericho to Ai, which is near Beth-aven, east of Bethel, and told them, “Go up and scout the land.” So the men went up and scouted Ai.
He commanded them, “Pay attention. Lie in ambush behind the city, not too far from it, and all of you be ready.
Therefore King Adoni-zedek of Jerusalem sent word to King Hoham of Hebron, King Piram of Jarmuth, King Japhia of Lachish, and King Debir of Eglon, saying,
When they had brought the kings to him, Joshua summoned all the men of Israel and said to the military commanders who had accompanied him, “Come here and put your feet on the necks of these kings.” So the commanders came forward and put their feet on their necks.
“On that day Moses swore to me, ‘The land where you have set foot will be an inheritance for you and your descendants forever, because you have followed the LORD my God completely.'
As the men prepared to go, Joshua commanded them[fn] to write down a description of the land, saying, “Go and survey the land, write a description of it, and return to me. I will then cast lots for you here in Shiloh in the presence of the LORD.”
“Tell the Israelites: Select your cities of refuge, as I instructed you through Moses,
The LORD said to Gideon, “You have too many troops for me to hand the Midianites over to them, or else Israel might elevate themselves over me and say,[fn] ‘I saved myself.'
“Now announce to the troops, ‘Whoever is fearful and trembling may turn back and leave Mount Gilead.' ” So twenty-two thousand of the troops turned back, but ten thousand remained.
Gideon sent messengers throughout the hill country of Ephraim with this message: “Come down to intercept the Midianites and take control of the watercourses ahead of them as far as Beth-barah and the Jordan.” So all the men of Ephraim were called out, and they took control of the watercourses as far as Beth-barah and the Jordan.
Abimelech son of Jerubbaal went to Shechem and spoke to his uncles and to his mother's whole clan, saying,
So he secretly sent messengers to Abimelech, saying, “Beware! Gaal son of Ebed and his brothers have come to Shechem and are turning the city against you.[fn]
Jephthah sent messengers to the king of the Ammonites, asking, “What do you have against me that you have come to fight me in my land? ”
to tell him, “This is what Jephthah says: Israel did not take away the land of Moab or the land of the Ammonites.
“Israel sent messengers to the king of Edom, saying, ‘Please let us travel through your land,' but the king of Edom would not listen. They also sent messengers to the king of Moab, but he refused. So Israel stayed in Kadesh.
Everyone who saw it said, “Nothing like this has ever happened or has been seen since the day the Israelites came out of the land of Egypt until now.[fn] Think it over, discuss it, and speak up! ”
Then all the people stood united and said, “None of us will go to his tent or return to his house.
and Phinehas son of Eleazar, son of Aaron, was serving before it. The Israelites asked, “Should we again fight against our brothers the Benjaminites or should we stop? ”
The LORD answered, “Fight, because I will hand them over to you tomorrow.”
The men of Israel had sworn an oath at Mizpah: “None of us will give his daughter to a Benjaminite in marriage.”
When she got up to gather grain, Boaz ordered his young men, “Let her even gather grain among the bundles, and don't humiliate her.
“I thought I should inform you: Buy it back in the presence of those seated here and in the presence of the elders of my people. If you want to redeem it, do it. But if you do[fn] not want to redeem it, tell me so that I will know, because there isn't anyone other than you to redeem it, and I am next after you.”
“I want to redeem it,” he answered.
Eli would bless Elkanah and his wife: “May the LORD give you children by this woman in place of the one she[fn] has given to the LORD.” Then they would go home.
“Anyone who is left in your family will come and bow down to him for a piece of silver or a loaf of bread. He will say: Please appoint me to some priestly office so I can have a piece of bread to eat.' ”
Samuel told them, “If you are returning to the LORD with all your heart, get rid of the foreign gods and the Ashtoreths that are among you, set your hearts on the LORD, and worship only him. Then he will rescue you from the Philistines.”
They got up early, and just before dawn, Samuel called to Saul on the roof, “Get up, and I'll send you on your way! ” Saul got up, and both he and Samuel went outside.
“Today when you leave me, you'll find two men at Rachel's Grave at Zelzah in the territory of Benjamin. They will say to you, ‘The donkeys you went looking for have been found, and now your father has stopped being concerned about the donkeys and is worried about you, asking: What should I do about my son? '
and said to the Israelites, “This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: ‘I brought Israel out of Egypt, and I rescued you from the power of the Egyptians and all the kingdoms that were oppressing you.'
He took a team of oxen, cut them in pieces, and sent them throughout the territory of Israel by messengers who said, “This is what will be done to the ox of anyone who doesn't march behind Saul and Samuel.” As a result, the terror of the LORD fell on the people, and they went out united.
Then Samuel said to the people, “Come, let's go to Gilgal, so we can renew the kingship there.”
Then Samuel said to the people, “The LORD, who appointed Moses and Aaron and who brought your ancestors up from the land of Egypt, is a witness.[fn]
and the men of Israel were worn out that day, for Saul had[fn] placed the troops under an oath: “The man who eats food before evening, before I have taken vengeance on my enemies is cursed.” So none of the troops tasted any food.
Then one of the troops said, “Your father made the troops solemnly swear, ‘The man who eats food today is cursed,' and the troops are exhausted.”
Then Saul dispatched messengers to Jesse and said, “Send me your son David, who is with the sheep.”
Then Saul sent word to Jesse: “Let David remain in my service, for he has found favor with me.”
Saul then ordered his servants, “Speak to David in private and tell him, ‘Look, the king is pleased with you, and all his servants love you. Therefore, you should become the king's son-in-law.' ”
so he told him, “My father, Saul, intends to kill you. Be on your guard in the morning and hide in a secret place and stay there.
Saul listened to Jonathan's advice and swore an oath: “As surely as the LORD lives, David will not be killed.”
Saul sent the agents back to see David and said, “Bring him on his bed so I can kill him.”
“Then I will send a servant and say, ‘Go and find the arrows! ' Now, if I expressly say to the servant, ‘Look, the arrows are on this side of you — get them,' then come, because as the LORD lives, it is safe for you and there is no problem.
Then Jonathan called to him, “Hurry up and don't stop! ” Jonathan's servant picked up the arrow and returned to his master.
So David inquired of the LORD: “Should I launch an attack against these Philistines? ”
The LORD answered David, “Launch an attack against the Philistines and rescue Keilah.”
Then a messenger came to Saul saying, “Come quickly, because the Philistines have raided the land! ”
After that, David got up, went out of the cave, and called to Saul, “My lord the king! ” When Saul looked behind him, David knelt low with his face to the ground and paid homage.
One of Nabal's young men informed Abigail, Nabal's wife, “Look, David sent messengers from the wilderness to greet our master, but he screamed at them.
Then David asked Ahimelech the Hethite and Joab's brother Abishai son of Zeruiah, “Who will go with me into the camp to Saul? ”
“I'll go with you,” answered Abishai.
Then David shouted to the troops and to Abner son of Ner, “Aren't you going to answer, Abner? ”
“Who are you who calls to the king? ” Abner asked.
David said to himself, “One of these days I'll be swept away by Saul. There is nothing better for me than to escape immediately to the land of the Philistines. Then Saul will give up searching for me everywhere in Israel, and I'll escape from him.”
David did not let a man or woman live to be brought to Gath, for he said, “Or they will inform on us and say, ‘This is what David did.' ” This was David's custom during the whole time he stayed in the Philistine territory.
So Achish trusted David, thinking, “Since he has made himself repulsive to his people Israel, he will be my servant forever.”
Then Saul swore to her by the LORD: “As surely as the LORD lives, no punishment will come to you[fn] from this.”
and David asked the LORD, “Should I pursue these raiders? Will I overtake them? ”
The LORD replied to him, “Pursue them, for you will certainly overtake them and rescue the people.”
When David came to Ziklag, he sent some of the plunder to his friends, the elders of Judah, saying, “Here is a gift for you from the plunder of the LORD's enemies.”
For David had said to the Amalekite, “Your blood is on your own head because your own mouth testified against you by saying, ‘I killed the LORD's anointed.' ”
Some time later, David inquired of the LORD: “Should I go to one of the towns of Judah? ”
The LORD answered him, “Go.”
Then David asked, “Where should I go? ”
“To Hebron,” the LORD replied.
Once again, Abner warned Asahel, “Stop chasing me. Why should I strike you to the ground? How could I ever look your brother Joab in the face? ”
Abner sent messengers as his representatives to say to David, “Whose land is it? Make your covenant with me, and you can be certain I am on your side to turn all Israel over to you.”
David replied, “Good, I will make a covenant with you. However, there's one thing I require of you: You will not see my face unless you first bring Saul's daughter Michal when you come to see me.”
Then David sent messengers to say to Ish-bosheth son of Saul, “Give me back my wife Michal. I was engaged to her for the price of a hundred Philistine foreskins.”
Abner conferred with the elders of Israel: “In the past you wanted David to be king over you.
“Now take action, because the LORD has spoken concerning David: ‘Through my servant David I will save my people Israel from the power of the Philistines and the power of all Israel's enemies.' ”
Then they came to urge David to eat food while it was still day, but David took an oath: “May God punish me and do so severely if I taste bread or anything else before sunset! ”
Then David inquired of the LORD: “Should I attack the Philistines? Will you hand them over to me? ”
The LORD replied to David, “Attack, for I will certainly hand the Philistines over to you.”
David feared the LORD that day and said, “How can the ark of the LORD ever come to me? ”
“In all my journeys with all the Israelites, have I ever spoken a word to one of the tribal leaders of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people Israel, asking: Why haven't you built me a house of cedar? '
since you, LORD of Armies, God of Israel, have revealed this to your servant when you said, “I will build a house for you.” Therefore, your servant has found the courage to pray this prayer to you.
In the letter he wrote:
Put Uriah at the front of the fiercest fighting, then withdraw from him so that he is struck down and dies.
He commanded the messenger, “When you've finished telling the king all the details of the battle —
David sent word to Tamar at the palace: “Please go to your brother Amnon's house and prepare a meal for him.”
Now Absalom commanded his young men, “Watch Amnon until he is in a good mood from the wine. When I order you to strike Amnon, then kill him. Don't be afraid. Am I not the one who has commanded you? Be strong and valiant! ”
While they were on the way, a report reached David: “Absalom struck down all the king's sons; not even one of them survived! ”
“So now, my lord the king, don't take seriously the report that says all the king's sons are dead. Only Amnon is dead.”
“Look,” Absalom explained to Joab, “I sent for you and said, ‘Come here. I want to send you to the king to ask: Why have I come back from Geshur? I'd be better off if I were still there.' So now, let me see the king. If I am guilty, let him kill me.”
“For your servant made a vow when I lived in Geshur of Aram, saying, ‘If the LORD really brings me back to Jerusalem, I will worship the LORD in Hebron.' ”[fn]
Then Absalom sent agents throughout the tribes of Israel with this message: “When you hear the sound of the ram's horn, you are to say, ‘Absalom has become king in Hebron! ' ”
Then an informer came to David and reported, “The hearts of the men of Israel are with Absalom.”
So Hushai came to Absalom, and Absalom told him, “Ahithophel offered this proposal. Should we carry out his proposal? If not, what do you say? ”
The king commanded Joab, Abishai, and Ittai, “Treat the young man Absalom gently for my sake.” All the people heard the king's orders to all the commanders about Absalom.
That day's victory was turned into mourning for all the troops because on that day the troops heard, “The king is grieving over his son.”
But the king covered his face and cried loudly, “My son Absalom! Absalom, my son, my son! ”
King David sent word to the priests Zadok and Abiathar: “Say to the elders of Judah, ‘Why should you be the last to restore the king to his palace? The talk of all Israel has reached the king at his house.
The LORD's anger burned against Israel again, and he stirred up David against them to say, “Go, count the people of Israel and Judah.”
When David got up in the morning, the word of the LORD had come to the prophet Gad, David's seer:
“Go and say to David, ‘This is what the LORD says: I am offering you three choices. Choose one of them, and I will do it to you.' ”
Adonijah son of Haggith kept exalting himself, saying, “I will be king! ” He prepared chariots, cavalry, and fifty men to run ahead of him.[fn]
But his father had never once infuriated him by asking, “Why did you do that? ” In addition, he was quite handsome and was born after Absalom.
Then Nathan said to Bathsheba, Solomon's mother, “Have you not heard that Adonijah son of Haggith has become king and our lord David does not know it?
“Go, approach King David and say to him, ‘My lord the king, did you not swear to your servant: Your son Solomon is to become king after me, and he is the one who is to sit on my throne? So why has Adonijah become king? '
She replied, “My lord, you swore to your servant by the LORD your God, ‘Your son Solomon is to become king after me, and he is the one who is to sit on my throne.'
“just as I swore to you by the LORD God of Israel: Your son Solomon is to become king after me, and he is the one who is to sit on my throne in my place, that is exactly what I will do this very day.”
It was reported to Solomon, “Look, Adonijah fears King Solomon, and he has taken hold of the horns of the altar, saying, ‘Let King Solomon first[fn] swear to me that he will not kill his servant with the sword.' ”
“and so that the LORD will fulfill his promise that he made to me: ‘If your sons take care to walk faithfully before me with all their heart and all their soul, you will never fail to have a man on the throne of Israel.'
“Keep an eye on Shimei son of Gera, the Benjaminite from Bahurim who is with you. He uttered malicious curses against me the day I went to Mahanaim. But he came down to meet me at the Jordan River, and I swore to him by the LORD, ‘I will never kill you with the sword.'
Then King Solomon took an oath by the LORD: “May God punish me and do so severely if Adonijah has not made this request at the cost of his life.
It was reported to King Solomon, “Joab has fled to the LORD's tabernacle and is now beside the altar.”
Then Solomon sent[fn] Benaiah son of Jehoiada and told him, “Go and strike him down! ”
So Benaiah went to the tabernacle and said to Joab, “This is what the king says: ‘Come out! ' ”
But Joab said, “No, for I will die here.”
So Benaiah took a message back to the king, “This is what Joab said, and this is how he answered me.”
So the king summoned Shimei and said to him, “Didn't I make you swear by the LORD and warn you, saying, ‘On the day you leave and go anywhere else, know for sure that you will certainly die'? And you said to me, ‘The sentence is fair; I will obey.'
“So I plan to build a temple for the name of the LORD my God, according to what the LORD promised my father David: ‘I will put your son on your throne in your place, and he will build the temple for my name.'
Then Hiram sent a reply to Solomon, saying, “I have heard your message; I will do everything you want regarding the cedar and cypress timber.
He said:
Blessed be the LORD God of Israel!
He spoke directly to my father David,
and he has fulfilled the promise by his power.
He said,
Therefore, LORD God of Israel,
keep what you promised
to your servant, my father David:
You will never fail to have a man
to sit before me on the throne of Israel,
if only your sons take care to walk before me
as you have walked before me.
I will establish your royal throne over Israel forever, as I promised your father David: You will never fail to have a man on the throne of Israel.
Then King Rehoboam consulted with the elders who had served his father Solomon when he was alive, asking, “How do you advise me to respond to this people? ”
So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, as the king had ordered: “Return to me on the third day.”
and spoke to them according to the young men's advice: “My father made your yoke heavy, but I will add to your yoke; my father disciplined you with whips, but I will discipline you with barbed whips.”
When all Israel saw that the king had not listened to them, the people answered him:
What portion do we have in David?
We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse.
Israel, return to your tents;
David, now look after your own house!
So Israel went to their tents,
“Say to Rehoboam son of Solomon, king of Judah, to the whole house of Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people,
He gave a sign that day. He said, “This is the sign that the LORD has spoken: ‘The altar will now be ripped apart, and the ashes that are on it will be poured out.' ”
When the king heard the message that the man of God had cried out against the altar at Bethel, Jeroboam stretched out his hand from the altar and said, “Arrest him! ” But the hand he stretched out against him withered, and he could not pull it back to himself.
“for this is what I was commanded by the word of the LORD: ‘You must not eat food or drink water or go back the way you came.' ”
Then their father asked them, “Which way did he go? ” His sons had seen[fn] the way taken by the man of God who had come from Judah.
“For a message came to me by the word of the LORD: ‘You must not eat food or drink water there or go back by the way you came.' ”
He said to him, “I am also a prophet like you. An angel spoke to me by the word of the LORD: ‘Bring him back with you to your house so that he may eat food and drink water.' ” The old prophet deceived him,
and the prophet cried out to the man of God who had come from Judah, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Because you rebelled against the LORD's command and did not keep the command that the LORD your God commanded you —
“but you went back and ate food and drank water in the place that he said to you, “Do not eat food and do not drink water” — your corpse will never reach the grave of your ancestors.' ”
After he had buried him, he said to his sons, “When I die, bury me in the grave where the man of God is buried; lay my bones beside his bones,
So Asa withdrew all the silver and gold that remained in the treasuries of the LORD's temple and the treasuries of the royal palace and gave it to his servants. Then King Asa sent them to Ben-hadad son of Tabrimmon son of Hezion king of Aram who lived in Damascus, saying,
After a long time, the word of the LORD came to Elijah in the third year: “Go and present yourself to Ahab. I will send rain on the surface of the land.”
All afternoon they kept on raving until the offering of the evening sacrifice, but there was no sound; no one answered, no one paid attention.
Elijah took twelve stones — according to the number of the tribes of the sons of Jacob, to whom the word of the LORD had come, saying, “Israel will be your name” —
The messengers then returned and said, “This is what Ben-hadad says: ‘I have sent messengers to you, saying, “You are to give me your silver, your gold, your wives, and your children.”
Then Ben-hadad sent messengers to him and said, “May the gods punish me and do so severely if Samaria's dust amounts to a handful for each of the people who follow me.”
So Ahab spoke to Naboth, saying, “Give me your vineyard so I can have it for a vegetable garden, since it is right next to my palace. I will give you a better vineyard in its place, or if you prefer, I will give you its value in silver.”
“Because I spoke to Naboth the Jezreelite,” he replied. “I told him, ‘Give me your vineyard for silver, or if you wish, I will give you a vineyard in its place.' But he said, ‘I won't give you my vineyard! ' ”
“Tell him, ‘This is what the LORD says: Have you murdered and also taken possession? ' Then tell him, ‘This is what the LORD says: In the place where the dogs licked up Naboth's blood, the dogs will also lick up your blood! ' ”
“The LORD also speaks of Jezebel: ‘The dogs will eat Jezebel in the plot of land[fn] at Jezreel:
The messenger who went to call Micaiah instructed him, “Look, the words of the prophets are unanimously favorable for the king. So let your words be like theirs, and speak favorably.”
Now the king of Aram had ordered his thirty-two chariot commanders, “Do not fight with anyone at all[fn] except the king of Israel.”
Then the cry rang out in the army as the sun set, declaring:
Each man to his own city,
and each man to his own land!
But the angel of the LORD said to Elijah the Tishbite, “Go and meet the messengers of the king of Samaria and say to them, ‘Is it because there is no God in Israel that you are going to inquire of Baal-zebub, the god of Ekron?
The king asked them, “What sort of man came up to meet you and spoke those words to you? ”
Then he sent a message to King Jehoshaphat of Judah: “The king of Moab has rebelled against me. Will you go with me to fight against Moab? ”
Jehoshaphat said, “I will go. I am as you are, my people as your people, my horses as your horses.”
Gehazi went ahead of them and placed the staff on the boy's face, but there was no sound or sign of life, so he went back to meet Elisha and told him, “The boy didn't wake up.”
He brought the letter to the king of Israel, and it read:
When this letter comes to you, note that I have sent you my servant Naaman for you to cure him of his skin disease.
When Elisha the man of God heard that the king of Israel had torn his clothes, he sent a message to the king: “Why have you torn your clothes? Have him come to me, and he will know there is a prophet in Israel.”
Then Elisha sent him a messenger, who said, “Go wash seven times in the Jordan and your skin will be restored and you will be clean.”
Gehazi said, “It's all right. My master has sent me to say, ‘I have just now discovered that two young men from the sons of the prophets have come to me from the hill country of Ephraim. Please give them seventy-five pounds[fn] of silver and two sets of clothing.' ”
When the king of Aram was waging war against Israel, he conferred with his servants, “My camp will be at such and such a place.”
But the man of God sent word to the king of Israel: “Be careful passing by this place, for the Arameans are going down there.”
The messengers took two chariots with horses, and the king sent them after the Aramean army, saying, “Go and see.”
When the man of God had said to the king, “About this time tomorrow twelve quarts of barley will sell for a half ounce of silver and six quarts of fine flour will sell for a half ounce of silver at Samaria's gate,”
Elisha said to the woman whose son he had restored to life, “Get ready, you and your household, and go live as a resident alien wherever you can. For the LORD has announced a seven-year famine, and it has already come to the land.”
The king had been speaking to Gehazi, the attendant of the man of God, saying, “Tell me all the great things Elisha has done.”
When the king asked the woman, she told him the story. So the king appointed a court official for her, saying, “Restore all that was hers, along with all the income from the field from the day she left the country until now.”
So the king said to Hazael, “Take a gift with you and go meet the man of God. Inquire of the LORD through him, ‘Will I recover from this sickness? ' ”
Hazael went to meet Elisha, taking with him a gift: forty camel-loads of all the finest products of Damascus. When he came and stood before him, he said, “Your son, King Ben-hadad of Aram, has sent me to ask you, ‘Will I recover from this sickness? ' ”
But they replied, “That's a lie! Tell us! ”
So Jehu said, “He talked to me about this and that and said, ‘This is what the LORD says: I anoint you king over Israel.' ”
So a horseman went to meet Jehu and said, “This is what the king asks: ‘Do you come in peace? ' ”
Jehu replied, “What do you have to do with peace? Fall in behind me.”
The watchman reported, “The messenger reached them but hasn't started back.”
Again the watchman reported, “He reached them but hasn't started back. Also, the driving is like that of Jehu son of Nimshi — he drives like a madman.”
Jehu said to Bidkar his aide, “Pick him up and throw him on the plot of ground belonging to Naboth the Jezreelite. For remember when you and I were riding side by side behind his father Ahab, and the LORD uttered this pronouncement against him:
So they went back and told him, and he said, “This fulfills the LORD's word that he spoke through his servant Elijah the Tishbite: ‘In the plot of land at Jezreel, the dogs will eat Jezebel's flesh.
Since Ahab had seventy sons in Samaria, Jehu wrote letters and sent them to Samaria to the rulers of Jezreel, to the elders, and to the guardians of Ahab's sons,[fn] saying:
Then Jehu wrote them a second letter, saying:
If you are on my side, and if you will obey me, bring me the heads of your master's sons[fn] at this time tomorrow at Jezreel.
All seventy of the king's sons were being cared for by the city's prominent men.
When the messenger came and told him, “They have brought the heads of the king's sons,” the king said, “Pile them in two heaps at the entrance of the city gate until morning.”
Then Jehu sent messengers throughout all Israel, and all the servants of Baal[fn] came; no one failed to come. They entered the temple of Baal, and it was filled from one end to the other.
and commanded them, “This is what you are to do: A third of you who come on duty on the Sabbath are to provide protection for the king's palace.
However, he did not put the children of the killers to death, as it is written in the book of the law of Moses where the LORD commanded, “Fathers are not to be put to death because of children, and children are not to be put to death because of fathers; instead, each one will be put to death for his own sin.”
Amaziah then sent messengers to Jehoash son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, king of Israel, and challenged him: “Come, let's meet face to face.”
King Jehoash of Israel sent word to King Amaziah of Judah, saying, “The thistle in Lebanon once sent a message to the cedar in Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son as a wife.' Then a wild animal in Lebanon passed by and trampled the thistle.
The word of the LORD that he spoke to Jehu was, “Four generations of your sons will sit on the throne of Israel,” and it was so.
So Ahaz sent messengers to King Tiglath-pileser of Assyria, saying, “I am your servant and your son. March up and save me from the grasp of the king of Aram and of the king of Israel, who are rising up against me.”
Then King Ahaz commanded the priest Uriah, “Offer on the great altar the morning burnt offering, the evening grain offering, and the king's burnt offering and his grain offering. Also offer the burnt offering of all the people of the land, their grain offering, and their drink offerings. Splatter on the altar all the blood of the burnt offering and all the blood of sacrifice. The bronze altar will be for me to seek guidance.”[fn]
Still, the LORD warned Israel and Judah through every prophet and every seer, saying, “Turn from your evil ways and keep my commands and statutes according to the whole law I commanded your ancestors and sent to you through my servants the prophets.”
Then the king of Assyria issued a command: “Send back one of the priests you deported. Have him go and live there so he can teach them the requirements of the god of the land.”
The LORD made a covenant with Jacob's descendants and commanded them, “Do not fear other gods; do not bow in worship to them; do not serve them; do not sacrifice to them.
“Don't let Hezekiah persuade you to rely on the LORD by saying, “Certainly the LORD will rescue us! This city will not be handed over to the king of Assyria.” '
“until I come and take you away to a land like your own land — a land of grain and new wine, a land of bread and vineyards, a land of olive trees and honey — so that you may live and not die. But don't listen to Hezekiah when he misleads you, saying, “The LORD will rescue us.”
But the people kept silent; they did not answer him at all, for the king's command was, “Don't answer him.”
The king had heard concerning King Tirhakah of Cush, “Look, he has set out to fight against you.” So he again sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying,
“Say this to King Hezekiah of Judah: ‘Don't let your God, on whom you rely, deceive you by promising that Jerusalem will not be handed over to the king of Assyria.
Then Isaiah son of Amoz sent a message to Hezekiah: “The LORD, the God of Israel says, ‘I have heard your prayer to me about King Sennacherib of Assyria.'
Isaiah had not yet gone out of the inner courtyard when the word of the LORD came to him:
In the eighteenth year of King Josiah, the king sent the court secretary Shaphan son of Azaliah, son of Meshullam, to the LORD's temple, saying,
Then the court secretary Shaphan told the king, “The priest Hilkiah has given me a book,” and Shaphan read it in the presence of the king.
Then he commanded the priest Hilkiah, Ahikam son of Shaphan, Achbor son of Micaiah, the court secretary Shaphan, and the king's servant Asaiah,
The king commanded all the people, “Observe the Passover of the LORD your God as written in the book of the covenant.”
Jabez called out to the God of Israel, “If only you would bless me, extend my border, let your hand be with me, and keep me from harm, so that I will not experience pain.”[fn] And God granted his request.
so David inquired of God, “Should I attack the Philistines? Will you hand them over to me? ”
The LORD replied, “Attack, and I will hand them over to you.”
“In all my journeys throughout Israel, have I ever spoken a word to even one of the judges of Israel, whom I commanded to shepherd my people, asking: Why haven't you built me a house of cedar? '
“Go and say to David, ‘This is what the LORD says: I am offering you three choices. Choose one of them for yourself, and I will do it to you.' ”
“but the word of the LORD came to me: ‘You have shed much blood and waged great wars. You are not to build a house for my name because you have shed so much blood on the ground before me.
Then David blessed the LORD in the sight of all the assembly. David said,
May you be blessed, LORD God of our father Israel, from eternity to eternity.
Then Solomon sent word to King Hiram[fn] of Tyre:
Do for me what you did for my father David. You sent him cedars to build him a house to live in.
He said:
Blessed be the LORD God of Israel!
He spoke directly to my father David,
and he has fulfilled the promise
by his power.
He said,
You have kept what you promised
to your servant, my father David.
You spoke directly to him,
and you fulfilled your promise by your power,
as it is today.
Therefore, LORD God of Israel,
keep what you promised
to your servant, my father David:
“You will never fail to have a man
to sit before me on the throne of Israel,
if only your sons take care to walk in my Law
as you have walked before me.”
I will establish your royal throne, as I promised your father David: You will never fail to have a man ruling in Israel.
Then King Rehoboam consulted with the elders who had attended his father Solomon when he was alive, asking, “How do you advise me to respond to this people? ”
Then the young men who had grown up with him told him, “This is what you should say to the people who said to you, ‘Your father made our yoke heavy, but you, make it lighter on us! ' This is what you should say to them: ‘My little finger is thicker than my father's waist!
So Jeroboam and all the people came to Rehoboam on the third day, just as the king had ordered, saying, “Return to me on the third day.”
and spoke to them according to the young men's advice, saying, “My father made your yoke heavy,[fn] but I will add to it; my father disciplined you with whips, but I, with barbed whips.”
The king did not listen to the people because the turn of events came from God, in order that the LORD might carry out his word that he had spoken through Ahijah the Shilonite to Jeroboam son of Nebat.
When all Israel saw[fn] that the king had not listened to them, the people answered the king:
What portion do we have in David?
We have no inheritance in the son of Jesse.
Israel, each to your tent;
David, look after your own house now!
So all Israel went to their tents.
“Say to Rehoboam son of Solomon, king of Judah, to all Israel in Judah and Benjamin, and to the rest of the people,
When the LORD saw that they had humbled themselves, the LORD's message came to Shemaiah: “They have humbled themselves; I will not destroy them but will grant them a little deliverance. My wrath will not be poured out on Jerusalem through Shishak.
So Asa brought out the silver and gold from the treasuries of the LORD's temple and the royal palace and sent it to Aram's King Ben-hadad, who lived in Damascus, saying,
The messenger who went to call Micaiah instructed him, “Look, the words of the prophets are unanimously favorable for the king. So let your words be like theirs, and speak favorably.”
Now the king of Aram had ordered his chariot commanders, “Do not fight with anyone at all[fn] except the king of Israel.”
He commanded them, saying, “In the fear of the LORD, with integrity, and wholeheartedly, you are to do the following:
Then Eliezer son of Dodavahu of Mareshah prophesied against Jehoshaphat, saying, “Because you formed an alliance with Ahaziah, the LORD has broken up what you have made.” So the ships were wrecked and were not able to go to Tarshish.
Then a letter came to Jehoram from the prophet Elijah, saying:
This is what the LORD, the God of your ancestor David says: “Because you have not walked in the ways of your father Jehoshaphat or in the ways of King Asa of Judah
However, he did not put their children to death, because — as it is written in the Law, in the book of Moses, where the LORD commanded — “Fathers are not to die because of children, and children are not to die because of fathers, but each one will die for his own sin.”
However, a man of God came to him and said, “King, do not let Israel's army go with you, for the LORD is not with Israel — all the Ephraimites.
King Amaziah of Judah took counsel and sent word to Jehoash[fn] son of Jehoahaz, son of Jehu, king of Israel, and challenged him: “Come, let's meet face to face.”
King Jehoash of Israel sent word to King Amaziah of Judah, saying, “The thistle in Lebanon sent a message to the cedar in Lebanon, saying, ‘Give your daughter to my son as a wife.' Then a wild animal in Lebanon passed by and trampled the thistle.
A large number of the people — many from Ephraim, Manasseh, Issachar, and Zebulun — were ritually unclean, yet they had eaten the Passover contrary to what was written. But Hezekiah had interceded for them, saying, “May the good LORD provide atonement on behalf of
Many people gathered and stopped up all the springs and the stream that flowed through the land; they said, “Why should the kings of Assyria come and find abundant water? ”
He set military commanders over the people and gathered the people in the square of the city gate. Then he encouraged them,[fn] saying,
After this, while King Sennacherib of Assyria with all his armed forces besieged[fn] Lachish, he sent his servants to Jerusalem against King Hezekiah of Judah and against all those of Judah who were in Jerusalem, saying,
“Isn't Hezekiah misleading you to give you over to death by famine and thirst when he says, “The LORD our God will keep us from the grasp of the king of Assyria”?
Didn't Hezekiah himself remove his high places and his altars and say to Judah and Jerusalem, “You must worship before one altar, and you must burn incense on it”?
He also wrote letters to mock the LORD, the God of Israel, saying against him:
Just like the national gods of the lands that did not rescue their people from my power, so Hezekiah's God will not rescue his people from my power.
Then the court secretary Shaphan told the king, “The priest Hilkiah gave me a book,” and Shaphan read from it in the presence of the king.
Then he commanded Hilkiah, Ahikam son of Shaphan, Abdon son of Micah, the court secretary Shaphan, and the king's servant Asaiah,
In the first year of King Cyrus of Persia, in order to fulfill the word of the LORD spoken through[fn] Jeremiah, the LORD roused the spirit of King Cyrus of Persia to issue a proclamation throughout his entire kingdom and also to put it in writing:

you gave through your servants the prophets, saying, “The land you are entering to possess is an impure land. The surrounding peoples have filled it from end to end with their uncleanness by their impurity and detestable practices.
Please remember what you commanded your servant Moses: “If you are unfaithful, I will scatter you among the peoples.
Sanballat and Geshem sent me a message: “Come, let's meet together in the villages of[fn] the Ono Valley.” They were planning to harm me.
So I sent messengers to them, saying, “I am doing important work and cannot come down. Why should the work cease while I leave it and go down to you? ”
Then I replied to him, “There is nothing to these rumors you are spreading; you are inventing them in your own mind.”
Then Haman informed King Ahasuerus, “There is one ethnic group, scattered throughout the peoples in every province of your kingdom, keeping themselves separate. Their laws are different from everyone else's and they do not obey the king's laws. It is not in the king's best interest to tolerate them.
“Put the garment and the horse under the charge of one of the king's most noble officials. Have them clothe the man the king wants to honor, parade him on the horse through the city square, and call out before him, ‘This is what is done for the man the king wants to honor.' ”
So Haman took the garment and the horse. He clothed Mordecai and paraded him through the city square, calling out before him, “This is what is done for the man the king wants to honor.”
But when the matter was brought before the king, he commanded by letter that the evil plan Haman had devised against the Jews return on his own head and that he should be hanged with his sons on the gallows.
He was still speaking when another messenger came and reported, “Your sons and daughters were eating and drinking wine in their oldest brother's house.
His wife said to him, “Are you still holding on to your integrity? Curse God and die! ”
The adulterer's eye watches for twilight,
thinking, “No eye will see me,”
and he covers his face.
He will look at men and say,
“I have sinned and perverted what was right;
yet I did not get what I deserved.[fn]
Suppose someone says to God,
“I have endured my punishment;
I will no longer act wickedly.
A man will even seize his brother
in his father's house, saying,
“You have a cloak — you be our leader!
This heap of rubble will be under your control.”
The LORD of Armies will bless them, saying, “Egypt my people, Assyria my handiwork, and Israel my inheritance are blessed.”
during that time the LORD had spoken through Isaiah son of Amoz, saying, “Go, take off your sackcloth from your waist and remove the sandals from your feet,” and he did that, going stripped and barefoot —
“Beware that Hezekiah does not mislead you by saying, ‘The LORD will rescue us.' Has any one of the gods of the nations rescued his land from the power of the king of Assyria?
The king had heard concerning King Tirhakah of Cush, “He has set out to fight against you.” So when he heard this, he sent messengers to Hezekiah, saying,
“Say this to King Hezekiah of Judah: ‘Don't let your God, on whom you rely, deceive you by promising that Jerusalem won't be handed over to the king of Assyria.
He said, “Please, LORD, remember how I have walked before you faithfully and wholeheartedly, and have done what pleases you.” And Hezekiah wept bitterly.
For I am the LORD your God,
who holds your right hand,
who says to you, “Do not fear,
I will help you.
But this is a people plundered and looted,
all of them trapped in holes
or imprisoned in dungeons.
They have become plunder
with no one to rescue them
and loot, with no one saying, “Give it back! ”
He makes a god or his idol with the rest of it.
He bows down to it and worships;
he prays to it, “Save me, for you are my god.”
who confirms the message of his servant
and fulfills the counsel of his messengers;
who says to Jerusalem, “She will be inhabited,”
and to the cities of Judah, “They will be rebuilt,”
and I will restore her ruins;
who says to Cyrus, “My shepherd,
he will fulfill all my pleasure”
and says to Jerusalem, “She will be rebuilt,”
and of the temple, “Its foundation will be laid.”
“Woe to the one who says to his father,
‘What are you fathering? '
or to his mother,[fn]
‘What are you giving birth to? ' ”
“It will be said about me, ‘Righteousness and strength
are found only in the LORD.' ”
All who are enraged against him
will come to him and be put to shame.
How beautiful on the mountains
are the feet of the herald,
who proclaims peace,
who brings news of good things,
who proclaims salvation,
who says to Zion, “Your God reigns! ”
Then the word of the LORD came to me, asking, “What do you see, Jeremiah? ”
I replied, “I see a branch of an almond tree.”
Again the word of the LORD came to me asking, “What do you see? ”
And I replied, “I see a boiling pot, its lip tilted from the north to the south.”
I said, “Oh no, Lord GOD, you have certainly deceived this people and Jerusalem, by announcing, ‘You will have peace,' while a sword is at[fn] our throats.”
“However, I did give them this command: ‘Obey me, and then I will be your God, and you will be my people. Follow every way I command you so that it may go well with you.'
“I have paid careful attention.
They do not speak what is right.
No one regrets his evil,
asking, ‘What have I done? '
Everyone has stayed his course
like a horse rushing into battle.
“which I commanded your ancestors when I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the iron furnace.” I declared, “Obey me, and do everything that I command you, and you will be my people, and I will be your God,”
The LORD said to me, “Proclaim all these words in the cities of Judah and in the streets of Jerusalem: ‘Obey the words of this covenant and carry them out.'
May the man be cursed
who brought the news to my father, saying,
“A male child is born to you,”
bringing him great joy.
This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD when King Zedekiah sent Pashhur son of Malchijah and the priest Zephaniah son of Maaseiah to Jeremiah, asking,
“Now when these people or a prophet or a priest asks you, ‘What is the burden[fn] of the LORD? ' you will respond to them, ‘What is the burden? I will throw you away! This is the LORD's declaration.'
“But if you say, ‘The burden of the LORD,' then this is what the LORD says: Because you have said, ‘The burden of the LORD,' and I specifically told you not to say, ‘The burden of the LORD,'
The prophet Jeremiah spoke concerning all the people of Judah and all the residents of Jerusalem as follows:
“From the thirteenth year of Josiah son of Amon, king of Judah, until this very day — twenty-three years — the word of the LORD has come to me, and I have spoken to you time and time again,[fn] but you have not obeyed.
“He announced, ‘Turn, each of you, from your evil way of life and from your evil deeds. Live in the land the LORD gave to you and your ancestors long ago and forever.
When he finished the address the LORD had commanded him to deliver to all the people, immediately the priests, the prophets, and all the people took hold of him, yelling, “You must surely die!
“How dare you prophesy in the name of the LORD, ‘This temple will become like Shiloh and this city will become an uninhabited ruin'! ” Then all the people crowded around Jeremiah at the LORD's temple.
Then Jeremiah said to all the officials and all the people, “The LORD sent me to prophesy all the words that you have heard against this temple and city.
I spoke to King Zedekiah of Judah in the same way: “Put your necks under the yoke of the king of Babylon, serve him and his people, and live!
Then I spoke to the priests and all these people, saying, “This is what the LORD says: ‘Do not listen to the words of your prophets. They are prophesying to you, claiming, “Look, very soon now the articles of the LORD's temple will be brought back from Babylon.” They are prophesying a lie to you.
In that same year, at the beginning of the reign of King Zedekiah of Judah, in the fifth month of the fourth year, the prophet Hananiah son of Azzur from Gibeon said to me in the temple of the LORD in the presence of the priests and all the people,
In the presence of all the people Hananiah proclaimed, “This is what the LORD says: ‘In this way, within two years I will break the yoke of King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon from the neck of all the nations.' ” The prophet Jeremiah then went on his way.
After the prophet Hananiah had broken the yoke bar from the neck of the prophet Jeremiah, the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:
“Go say to Hananiah, ‘This is what the LORD says: You broke a wooden yoke bar, but in its place you will make an iron yoke bar.
He sent the letter with Elasah son of Shaphan and Gemariah son of Hilkiah, whom Zedekiah king of Judah sent to Babylon to King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon. The letter stated:
“For he has sent word to us in Babylon, claiming, “The exile will be long. Build houses and settle down. Plant gardens and eat their produce.” ' ”
“Send a message to all the exiles, saying, ‘This is what the LORD says concerning Shemaiah the Nehelamite. Because Shemaiah prophesied to you, though I did not send him, and made you trust a lie,
“This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: Write on a scroll all the words that I have spoken to you,
“No longer will one teach his neighbor or his brother, saying, ‘Know the LORD,' for they will all know me, from the least to the greatest of them” — this is the LORD's declaration. “For I will forgive their iniquity and never again remember their sin.
King Zedekiah of Judah had imprisoned him, saying, “Why are you prophesying as you do? You say, ‘This is what the LORD says: Look, I am about to hand this city over to Babylon's king, and he will capture it.
“Watch! Hanamel, the son of your uncle Shallum, is coming to you to say, ‘Buy my field in Anathoth for yourself, for you own the right of redemption to buy it.'
“After I had given the purchase agreement to Baruch, son of Neriah, I prayed to the LORD:
While he was still confined in the guard's courtyard, the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah a second time:
This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD when King Nebuchadnezzar of Babylon, his whole army, all the kingdoms of the lands under his control, and all other peoples were fighting against Jerusalem and all its surrounding cities:
“This is what the LORD, the God of Israel, says: I made a covenant with your ancestors when I brought them out of the land of Egypt, out of the place of slavery, saying,
This is the word that came to Jeremiah from the LORD in the days of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah:
But they replied, “We do not drink wine, for Jonadab, son of our ancestor Rechab, commanded, ‘You and your descendants must never drink wine.
“Time and time again[fn] I have sent you all my servants the prophets, proclaiming, “Turn, each one from his evil way, and correct your actions. Stop following other gods to serve them. Live in the land that I gave you and your ancestors.” But you did not pay attention or obey me.
In the fourth year of Jehoiakim son of Josiah, king of Judah, this word came to Jeremiah from the LORD:
Then Jeremiah commanded Baruch, “I am restricted; I cannot enter the temple of the LORD,
After the king had burned the scroll and the words Baruch had written at Jeremiah's dictation,[fn] the word of the LORD came to Jeremiah:
“You are to proclaim concerning King Jehoiakim of Judah, ‘This is what the LORD says: You have burned the scroll, asking, “Why have you written on it that the king of Babylon will certainly come and destroy this land and cause it to be without people or animals? ”
Nevertheless, King Zedekiah sent Jehucal son of Shelemiah and Zephaniah son of Maaseiah, the priest, to the prophet Jeremiah, requesting, “Please pray to the LORD our God on our behalf! ”
But when he was at the Benjamin Gate, an officer of the guard was there, whose name was Irijah son of Shelemiah, son of Hananiah, and he apprehended the prophet Jeremiah, saying, “You are defecting to the Chaldeans.”
Now Shephatiah son of Mattan, Gedaliah son of Pashhur, Jucal[fn] son of Shelemiah, and Pashhur son of Malchijah heard the words Jeremiah was speaking to all the people:
So the king commanded Ebed-melech, the Cushite, “Take from here thirty men under your authority[fn] and pull the prophet Jeremiah up from the cistern before he dies.”
King Zedekiah swore to Jeremiah in private, “As the LORD lives, who has given us this life, I will not kill you or hand you over to these men who intend to take your life.”
Now the word of the LORD had come to Jeremiah when he was confined in the guard's courtyard:
Gedaliah son of Ahikam, son of Shaphan, swore an oath to them and their men, assuring them, “Don't be afraid to serve the Chaldeans. Live in the land and serve the king of Babylon, and it will go well for you.
When Jeremiah had finished speaking to all the people all the words of the LORD their God — all these words the LORD their God had sent him to give them —
then Azariah[fn] son of Hoshaiah, Johanan son of Kareah, and all the other arrogant men responded to Jeremiah, “You are speaking a lie! The LORD our God has not sent you to say, ‘You must not go to Egypt to stay there for a while! '
This is the word that came to Jeremiah for all the Jews living in the land of Egypt — at Migdol, Tahpanhes, Memphis, and in the land of Pathros:
“So I sent you all my servants the prophets time and time again,[fn] saying, ‘Don't commit this detestable action that I hate.'
But Jeremiah responded to all the people — the men, women, and all the people who were answering him:
Then he called loudly in my hearing, “Come near, executioners of the city, each of you with a destructive weapon in his hand.”
Then the man clothed in linen and carrying writing equipment reported back, “I have done all that you commanded me.”
After the LORD commanded the man clothed in linen, saying, “Take fire from inside the wheelwork, from among the cherubim,” the man went in and stood beside a wheel.
“Say to them, ‘This is what the Lord GOD says: On the day I chose Israel, I swore an oath[fn] to the descendants of Jacob's house and made myself known to them in the land of Egypt. I swore to them, saying, “I am the LORD your God.”
The word of the LORD came to me in the ninth year, in the tenth month, on the tenth day of the month:
In the eleventh year, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me:
“Will you still say, “I am a god,”
in the presence of those who slay[fn] you?
Yet you will be only a man, not a god,
in the hands of those who kill you.
In the tenth year, in the tenth month on the twelfth day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me:
In the twenty-seventh year, in the first month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me:
In the eleventh year, in the first month, on the seventh day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me:
In the eleventh year, in the third month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me:
In the twelfth year, in the twelfth month, on the first day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me:
In the twelfth year,[fn] on the fifteenth day of the month, the word of the LORD came to me:
In the twelfth year of our exile, in the tenth month, on the fifth day of the month, a fugitive from Jerusalem came to me and reported, “The city has been taken! ”
Then he said to me, “Son of man, these bones are the whole house of Israel. Look how they say, ‘Our bones are dried up, and our hope has perished; we are cut off.'
Listen to this message that the LORD has spoken against you, Israelites, against the entire clan that I brought from the land of Egypt:
Amaziah the priest of Bethel sent word to King Jeroboam of Israel, saying, “Amos has conspired against you right here in the house of Israel. The land cannot endure all his words,
Then he issued a decree in Nineveh:
By order of the king and his nobles: No person or animal, herd or flock, is to taste anything at all. They must not eat or drink water.
In that day one will take up a taunt against you
and lament mournfully, saying,
“We are totally ruined!
He measures out the allotted land of my people.
How he removes it from me!
He allots our fields to traitors.”
House of Jacob, should it be asked,
“Is the Spirit of the LORD impatient?
Are these the things he does? ”
Don't my words bring good
to the one who walks uprightly?
Woe to him who says to wood: Wake up!
or to mute stone: Come alive!
Can it teach?
Look! It may be plated with gold and silver,
yet there is no breath in it at all.
In the second year of King Darius,[fn] on the first day of the sixth month, the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, the governor of Judah, and to Joshua son of Jehozadak, the high priest:
“The LORD of Armies says this: These people say: The time has not come for the house of the LORD to be rebuilt.”
On the twenty-first day of the seventh month, the word of the LORD came through the prophet Haggai:
“Speak to Zerubbabel son of Shealtiel, governor of Judah, to the high priest Joshua son of Jehozadak, and to the remnant of the people:
On the twenty-fourth day of the ninth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Haggai:
The word of the LORD came to Haggai a second time on the twenty-fourth day of the month:
“Speak to Zerubbabel, governor of Judah: I am going to shake the heavens and the earth.
In the eighth month, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berechiah, son of Iddo:
On the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, which is the month of Shebat, in the second year of Darius, the word of the LORD came to the prophet Zechariah son of Berechiah, son of Iddo:
So the angel who was speaking with me said, “Proclaim: The LORD of Armies says: I am extremely jealous for Jerusalem and Zion.
“Proclaim further: This is what the LORD of Armies says: My cities will again overflow with prosperity; the LORD will once more comfort Zion and again choose Jerusalem.”
He said to him, “Run and tell this young man: Jerusalem will be inhabited without walls because of the number of people and animals in it.”
So he answered me, “This is the word of the LORD to Zerubbabel: ‘Not by strength or by might, but by my Spirit,' says the LORD of Armies.
Then he summoned me saying, “See, those going to the land of the north have pacified my Spirit in the northern land.”
by asking the priests who were at the house of the LORD of Armies as well as the prophets, “Should we mourn and fast in the fifth month as we have done these many years? ”
“Ask all the people of the land and the priests: When you fasted and lamented in the fifth and in the seventh months for these seventy years, did you really fast for me?
