“Why do you ask me about what is good? ”[fn] he said to him. “There is only one who is good.[fn] If you want to enter into life, keep the commandments.”

But he denied it in front of everyone: “I don't know what you're talking about.”

Now Jesus stood before the governor. “Are you the king of the Jews? ” the governor asked him.

Jesus answered, “You say so.”

His disciples said to him, “You see the crowd pressing against you, and yet you say, ‘Who touched me? ' ”

“Why do you call me good? ”  Jesus asked him. “No one is good except God alone.

But he denied it: “I don't know or understand what you're talking about.” Then he went out to the entryway,[fn] and a rooster crowed.[fn]

So Pilate asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews? ”

He answered him, “You say so.”

“Who touched me? ” Jesus asked.

When they all denied it, Peter[fn] said, “Master, the crowds are hemming you in and pressing against you.”[fn]

“Lord,” Peter asked, “are you telling this parable to us or to everyone? ”

“Why do you call me good? ” Jesus asked him. “No one is good except God alone.

They questioned him, “Teacher, we know that you speak and teach correctly, and you don't show partiality[fn] but teach truthfully the way of God.

But Peter said, “Man, I don't know what you're talking about! ” Immediately, while he was still speaking, a rooster crowed.

So Pilate asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews? ”

He answered him, “You say so.”[fn]

“Who are you, then? ” they asked. “We need to give an answer to those who sent us. What can you tell us about yourself? ”

“In the law Moses commanded us to stone such women. So what do you say? ”

“We are descendants[fn] of Abraham,” they answered him, “and we have never been enslaved to anyone. How can you say, ‘You will become free'? ”

Then the Jews said, “Now we know you have a demon. Abraham died and so did the prophets. You say, ‘If anyone keeps my word, he will never taste death.'

Again they asked the blind man, “What do you say about him, since he opened your eyes? ”

“He's a prophet,” he said.

Then the crowd replied to him, “We have heard from the law that the Messiah will remain forever. So how can you say, ‘The Son of Man must be lifted up'? Who is this Son of Man? ”

Jesus said to him, “Have I been among you all this time and you do not know me, Philip? The one who has seen me has seen the Father. How can you say, ‘Show us the Father'?

His disciples said, “Look, now you're speaking plainly and not using any figurative language.

Jesus answered, “Are you asking this on your own, or have others told you about me? ”

“You are a king then? ” Pilate asked.

“You say that I'm a king,” Jesus replied. “I was born for this, and I have come into the world for this: to testify to the truth. Everyone who is of the truth listens to my voice.”

Otherwise, if you praise with the spirit,[fn] how will the outsider[fn] say “Amen” at your giving of thanks, since he does not know what you are saying?

“For you say, ‘I'm rich; I have become wealthy and need nothing,' and you don't realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked.
