“For I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees, you will never get into the kingdom of heaven.

So they answered Jesus, “We don't know.”

And he said to them, “Neither will I tell you by what authority I do these things.

He replied to them, “Do you see all these things? Truly I tell you, not one stone will be left here on another that will not be thrown down.”

“Truly I tell you, this generation will certainly not pass away until all these things take place.

“And what I say to you, I say to everyone: Be alert! ”

But if our unrighteousness highlights[fn] God's righteousness, what are we to say? I am using a human argument:[fn] Is God unrighteous to inflict wrath?

I am using a human analogy because of the weakness of your flesh.[fn] For just as you offered the parts of yourselves as slaves to impurity, and to greater and greater lawlessness, so now offer them as slaves to righteousness, which results in sanctification.

I speak the truth in Christ ​— ​I am not lying; my conscience testifies to me through the Holy Spirit[fn] ​— ​

But I ask, “Did they not hear? ” Yes, they did:

Their voice has gone out to the whole earth,

and their words to the ends of the world.

Now I am speaking to you Gentiles. Insofar as I am an apostle to the Gentiles, I magnify my ministry,

For I say that Christ became a servant of the circumcised[fn] on behalf of God's truth, to confirm the promises to the fathers,

What I am saying is this: One of you says, “I belong to Paul,” or “I belong to Apollos,” or “I belong to Cephas,” or “I belong to Christ.”

I say this to your shame! Can it be that there is not one wise person among you who is able to arbitrate between fellow believers?

I say this as a concession, not as a command.

But I (not the Lord) say to the rest: If any brother has an unbelieving wife and she is willing to live with him, he must not divorce her.

I am saying this for your own benefit, not to put a restraint on you, but to promote what is proper and so that you may be devoted to the Lord without distraction.

I am speaking as to sensible people. Judge for yourselves what I am saying.

I do not mean your own conscience, but the other person's. For why is my freedom judged by another person's conscience?

Come to your senses[fn] and stop sinning; for some people are ignorant about God. I say this to your shame.

Listen, I am telling you a mystery: We will not all fall asleep, but we will all be changed,

I speak as to my children; as a proper response, open your heart to us.

I don't say this to condemn you, since I have already said that you are in our hearts, to die together and to live together.

I am not saying this as a command. Rather, by means of the diligence of others, I am testing the genuineness of your love.

I repeat: Let no one consider me a fool. But if you do, at least accept me as a fool so that I can also boast a little.

I say this to our shame: We have been too weak for that!

But in whatever anyone dares to boast ​— ​I am talking foolishly ​— ​I also dare:

As we have said before, I now say again: If anyone is preaching to you a gospel contrary to what you received, a curse be on him!

Brothers and sisters, I'm using a human illustration. No one sets aside or makes additions to a validated human will.[fn]

My point is this: The law, which came 430 years later, does not invalidate a covenant previously established by God[fn] and thus cancel the promise.

Take note! I, Paul, am telling you that if you get yourselves circumcised, Christ will not benefit you at all.

Therefore, I say this and testify in the Lord: You should no longer walk as the Gentiles do, in the futility of their thoughts.

This mystery is profound, but I am talking about Christ and the church.

For I have often told you, and now say again with tears, that many live as enemies of the cross of Christ.

I don't say this out of need, for I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I find myself.

I am saying this so that no one will deceive you with arguments that sound reasonable.

For this I was appointed a herald, an apostle (I am telling the truth;[fn] I am not lying), and a teacher of the Gentiles in faith and truth.

Consider what I say, for the Lord will give you understanding in everything.

Since I am confident of your obedience, I am writing to you, knowing that you will do even more than I say.

If anyone sees a fellow believer[fn] committing a sin that doesn't lead to death, he should ask, and God will give life to him ​— ​to those who commit sin that doesn't lead to death. There is sin[fn] that leads to death. I am not saying he should pray about that.

“I say to the rest of you in Thyatira, who do not hold this teaching, who haven't known “the so-called secrets[fn] of Satan” ​— ​as they say ​— ​I am not putting any other burden on you.

I, Paul, write this with my own hand: I will repay it ​— ​not to mention to you that you owe me even your very self.

And what more can I say? Time is too short for me to tell about Gideon, Barak, Samson, Jephthah, David, Samuel, and the prophets,
