But after he had considered these things, an angel of the Lord appeared to him in a dream, saying, “Joseph, son of David, don't be afraid to take Mary as your wife, because what has been conceived in her is from the Holy Spirit.

After they were gone, an angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream, saying, “Get up! Take the child and his mother, flee to Egypt, and stay there until I tell you. For Herod is about to search for the child to kill him.”

saying, “Get up, take the child and his mother, and go to the land of Israel, because those who intended to kill the child are dead.”

and saying, “Repent, because the kingdom of heaven has come near! ”

But John tried to stop him, saying, “I need to be baptized by you, and yet you come to me? ”

Then[fn] he began to teach them, saying:

“Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,' will enter the kingdom of heaven, but only the one who does the will of my Father in heaven.

Right away a man with leprosy[fn] came up and knelt before him, saying, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”

“Lord, my servant is lying at home paralyzed, in terrible agony.”

As he was telling them these things, suddenly one of the leaders came and knelt down before him, saying, “My daughter just died,[fn] but come and lay your hand on her, and she will live.”

Then he touched their eyes, saying, “Let it be done for you according to your faith.”

Jesus sent out these twelve after giving them instructions: “Don't take the road that leads to the Gentiles, and don't enter any Samaritan town.

Then he told them many things in parables, saying, “Consider the sower who went out to sow.

He presented another parable to them: “The kingdom of heaven may be compared to a man who sowed good seed in his field.

He presented another parable to them: “The kingdom of heaven is like a mustard seed that a man took and sowed in his field.

Immediately Jesus spoke to them. “Have courage! It is I. Don't be afraid.”

But when he saw the strength of the wind,[fn] he was afraid, and beginning to sink he cried out, “Lord, save me! ”

“For God said:[fn] Honor your father and your mother; and, Whoever speaks evil of father or mother must be put to death.

Hypocrites! Isaiah prophesied correctly about you when he said:

When Jesus came to the region of Caesarea Philippi,[fn] he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that the Son of Man is? ”[fn]

Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him, “Oh no,[fn] Lord! This will never happen to you! ”

As they were coming down the mountain, Jesus commanded them, “Don't tell anyone about the vision until the Son of Man is raised[fn] from the dead.”

When they reached the crowd, a man approached and knelt down before him.

“Yes,” he said.

When he went into the house, Jesus spoke to him first,[fn] “What do you think, Simon? From whom do earthly kings collect tariffs or taxes? From their sons or from strangers? ”[fn]

“At this, the servant fell facedown before him and said, ‘Be patient with me, and I will pay you everything.'

“That servant went out and found one of his fellow servants who owed him a hundred denarii.[fn] He grabbed him, started choking him, and said, ‘Pay what you owe! '

telling them, “Go into the village ahead of you. At once you will find a donkey tied there with her colt. Untie them and bring them to me.

“Finally, he sent his son to them. ‘They will respect my son,' he said.

Once more Jesus spoke to them in parables:

“Again, he sent out other servants and said, ‘Tell those who are invited: See, I've prepared my dinner; my oxen and fattened cattle have been slaughtered, and everything is ready. Come to the wedding banquet.'

And one of them, an expert in the law, asked a question to test him:

“What do you think about the Messiah? Whose son is he? ”

They replied, “David's.”

“The scribes and the Pharisees are seated in the chair of Moses.

“The man who had received five talents approached, presented five more talents, and said, ‘Master, you gave me five talents. See, I've earned five more talents.'

“Then he will answer them, ‘Truly I tell you, whatever you did not do for one of the least of these, you did not do for me.'

Then he took a cup, and after giving thanks, he gave it to them and said, “Drink from it, all of you.

Going a little farther,[fn] he fell facedown and prayed, “My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from me. Yet not as I will, but as you will.”

Again, a second time, he went away and prayed, “My Father, if this[fn] cannot pass[fn] unless I drink it, your will be done.”

His betrayer had given them a sign: “The one I kiss, he's the one; arrest him.”

Then the high priest tore his robes and said, “He has blasphemed! Why do we still need witnesses? See, now you've heard the blasphemy.

But he denied it in front of everyone: “I don't know what you're talking about.”

“I have sinned by betraying innocent blood,” he said.

“What's that to us? ” they said. “See to it yourself! ”

Now Jesus stood before the governor. “Are you the king of the Jews? ” the governor asked him.

Jesus answered, “You say so.”

When Pilate saw that he was getting nowhere, but that a riot was starting instead, he took some water, washed his hands in front of the crowd, and said, “I am innocent of this man's blood.[fn] See to it yourselves! ”

About three in the afternoon Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Elí, Elí, lemá[fn] sabachtháni ? ” that is, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me ?”

Just then[fn] Jesus met them and said, “Greetings! ” They came up, took hold of his feet, and worshiped him.

Jesus came near and said to them, “All authority has been given to me in heaven and on earth.

He proclaimed, “One who is more powerful than I am is coming after me. I am not worthy to stoop down and untie the strap of his sandals.

“The time is fulfilled, and the kingdom of God has come near. Repent and believe the good news! ”

“What do you have to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are ​— ​the Holy One of God! ”

Then a man with leprosy[fn] came to him and, on his knees,[fn] begged him, “If you are willing, you can make me clean.”

He replied to them, “Who are my mother and my brothers? ”

“What is your name? ” he asked him.

“My name is Legion,” he answered him, “because we are many.”

and begged him earnestly, “My little daughter is dying. Come and lay your hands on her so that she can get well[fn] and live.”

Then he gave them strict orders: “Watch out! Beware of the leaven[fn] of the Pharisees and the leaven of Herod.”

Then he sent him home, saying, “Don't even go into the village.”[fn]

But turning around and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! You are not thinking about God's concerns[fn] but human concerns.”

When Jesus saw that a crowd was quickly gathering, he rebuked the unclean spirit, saying to it, “You mute and deaf spirit, I command you: Come out of him and never enter him again.”

John said to him, “Teacher, we saw someone[fn] driving out demons in your name, and we tried to stop him because he wasn't following us.”

He was teaching them: “Is it not written, My house will be called a house of prayer for all nations? But you have made it a den of thieves! ”

“He still had one to send, a beloved son. Finally he sent him to them, saying, ‘They will respect my son.'

“And as for the dead being raised ​— ​haven't you read in the book of Moses, in the passage about the burning bush, how God said to him: I am the God of Abraham and the God of Isaac and the God of Jacob?

His betrayer had given them a signal. “The one I kiss,” he said, “he's the one; arrest him and take him away under guard.”

Then the high priest stood up before them all and questioned Jesus, “Don't you have an answer to what these men are testifying against you? ”

But he denied it: “I don't know or understand what you're talking about.” Then he went out to the entryway,[fn] and a rooster crowed.[fn]

Pilate questioned him again, “Aren't you going to answer? Look how many things they are accusing you of! ”

Pilate answered them, “Do you want me to release the king of the Jews for you? ”

And at three Jesus cried out with a loud voice, “Eloi, Eloi, lemá sabachtháni? ” which is translated, “My God, my God, why have you abandoned me? ”

Someone ran and filled a sponge with sour wine, fixed it on a stick, offered him a drink, and said, “Let's see if Elijah comes to take him down.”

He asked for a writing tablet and wrote, “His name is John.” And they were all amazed.

Then his father Zechariah was filled with the Holy Spirit and prophesied:

John answered them all, “I baptize you with water, but one who is more powerful than I am is coming. I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with[fn] the Holy Spirit and fire.

But Jesus answered him, “It is written: Man must not live on bread alone.”[fn]

“Leave us alone! What do you have to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are ​— ​the Holy One of God! ”

When Simon Peter saw this, he fell at Jesus's knees and said, “Go away from me, because I'm a sinful man, Lord! ”

While he was in one of the towns, a man was there who had leprosy[fn] all over him. He saw Jesus, fell facedown, and begged him, “Lord, if you are willing, you can make me clean.”

Jesus went with them, and when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to tell him, “Lord, don't trouble yourself, since I am not worthy to have you come under my roof.

and sent them to the Lord, asking, “Are you the one who is to come, or should we expect someone else? ”

When the Pharisee who had invited him saw this, he said to himself, “This man, if he were a prophet, would know who and what kind of woman this is who is touching him ​— ​she's a sinner! ”

“Still other seed fell on good ground; when it grew up, it produced fruit: a hundred times what was sown.” As he said this, he called out, “Let anyone who has ears to hear listen.”

“What is your name? ” Jesus asked him.

“Legion,” he said, because many demons had entered him.

The man from whom the demons had departed begged him earnestly to be with him. But he sent him away and said,

While he was still speaking, someone came from the synagogue leader's house and said, “Your daughter is dead. Don't bother the teacher anymore.”

So he[fn] took her by the hand and called out, “Child, get up! ”

While he was praying in private and his disciples were with him, he asked them, “Who do the crowds say that I am? ”

Just then a man from the crowd cried out, “Teacher, I beg you to look at my son, because he's my only child.

Then an expert in the law stood up to test him, saying, “Teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? ”

One of the experts in the law answered him, “Teacher, when you say these things you insult us too.”

Then he told them a parable: “A rich man's land was very productive.

In response, Jesus asked the law experts and the Pharisees, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not? ”

He told a parable to those who were invited, when he noticed how they would choose the best places for themselves:

So he told them this parable:

“and coming home, he calls his friends and neighbors together, saying to them, ‘Rejoice with me, because I have found my lost sheep! '

“And if he sins against you seven times in a day, and comes back to you seven times, saying, ‘I repent,' you must forgive him.”

“There was a judge in a certain town who didn't fear God or respect people.

“But the tax collector, standing far off, would not even raise his eyes to heaven but kept striking his chest and saying, ‘God, have mercy on me,[fn] a sinner! '

A ruler asked him, “Good teacher, what must I do to inherit eternal life? ”

So he called out, “Jesus, Son of David, have mercy on me! ”

“What do you want me to do for you? ”

“Lord,” he said, “I want to see.”

“The first came forward and said, ‘Master, your mina has earned ten more minas.'

“The second came and said, ‘Master, your mina has made five minas.'

“And another came and said, ‘Master, here is your mina. I have kept it safe in a cloth

saying, “If you knew this day what would bring peace ​— ​but now it is hidden from your eyes.

and he said, “It is written, my house will be a house of prayer, but you have made it a den of thieves! ”

And he took bread, gave thanks, broke it, gave it to them, and said, “This is my body, which is given for you. Do this in remembrance of me.”

“Father, if you are willing, take this cup away from me ​— ​nevertheless, not my will, but yours, be done.”

But he denied it: “Woman, I don't know him.”

About an hour later, another kept insisting, “This man was certainly with him, since he's also a Galilean.”

So Pilate asked him, “Are you the king of the Jews? ”

He answered him, “You say so.”[fn]

Then one of the criminals hanging there began to yell insults at[fn] him: “Aren't you the Messiah? Save yourself and us! ”

When the centurion saw what happened, he began to glorify God, saying, “This man really was righteous! ”[fn]

“saying, ‘It is necessary that the Son of Man be betrayed into the hands of sinful men, be crucified, and rise on the third day'? ”

(John testified concerning him and exclaimed, “This was the one of whom I said, ‘The one coming after me ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.' ”)

“I baptize with[fn] water,” John answered them. “Someone stands among you, but you don't know him.

And John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and he rested on him.

Jesus answered, “If you knew the gift of God, and who is saying to you, ‘Give me a drink,' you would ask him, and he would give you living water.”

As he was teaching in the temple, Jesus cried out, “You know me and you know where I am from. Yet I have not come on my own, but the one who sent me is true. You don't know him;

On the last and most important day of the festival, Jesus stood up and cried out, “If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me[fn] and drink.

Jesus spoke to them again: “I am the light of the world. Anyone who follows me will never walk in the darkness but will have the light of life.”

Jesus replied to them, “The hour has come for the Son of Man to be glorified.

After he had suffered, he also presented himself alive to them by many convincing proofs, appearing to them over a period of forty days and speaking about the kingdom of God.

With many other words he testified and strongly urged them, saying, “Be saved from this corrupt[fn] generation! ”

“You are the sons[fn] of the prophets and of the covenant that God made with your ancestors, saying to Abraham, And all the families of the earth will be blessed through your offspring.

Someone came and reported to them, “Look! The men you put in jail are standing in the temple and teaching the people.”

“Didn't we strictly order you not to teach in this name? Look, you have filled Jerusalem with your teaching and are determined to make us guilty of this man's blood.”

“Some time ago Theudas rose up, claiming to be somebody, and a group of about four hundred men rallied to him. He was killed, and all his followers were dispersed and came to nothing.

A man named Simon had previously practiced sorcery in that city and amazed the Samaritan people, while claiming to be somebody great.

saying, “Give me this power also so that anyone I lay hands on may receive the Holy Spirit.”

An angel of the Lord spoke to Philip: “Get up and go south to the road that goes down from Jerusalem to Gaza.” (This is the desert road.[fn])

But Peter lifted him up and said, “Stand up. I myself am also a man.”

Peter began to explain to them step by step,

Suddenly an angel of the Lord appeared, and a light shone in the cell. Striking Peter on the side, he woke him up and said, “Quick, get up! ” And the chains fell off his wrists.

After they stopped speaking, James responded, “Brothers, listen to me.

During the night Paul had a vision in which a Macedonian man was standing and pleading with him, “Cross over to Macedonia and help us! ”

But Paul called out in a loud voice, “Don't harm yourself, because we're all here! ”

Paul said, “John baptized with a baptism of repentance, telling the people that they should believe in the one who would come after him, that is, in Jesus.”

“You see and hear that not only in Ephesus, but in almost all of Asia, this man Paul has persuaded and misled a considerable number of people by saying that gods made by hand are not gods.

“But they have been informed about you ​— ​that you are teaching all the Jews who are among the Gentiles to abandon Moses, telling them not to circumcise their children or to live according to our customs.

After he had given permission, Paul stood on the steps and motioned with his hand to the people. When there was a great hush, he addressed them in Aramaic:[fn]

When the centurion heard this, he went and reported to the commander, saying, “What are you going to do? For this man is a Roman citizen.”

When Paul was called in, Tertullus began to accuse him and said, “We enjoy great peace because of you, and reforms are taking place for the benefit of this nation because of your foresight.

Since they were staying there several days, Festus presented Paul's case to the king, saying, “There's a man who was left as a prisoner by Felix.

“To this very day, I have had help from God, and I stand and testify to both small and great, saying nothing other than what the prophets and Moses said would take place ​— ​

and told them, “Men, I can see that this voyage is headed toward disaster and heavy loss, not only of the cargo and the ship but also of our lives.”

“and said, ‘Don't be afraid, Paul. It is necessary for you to appear before Caesar. And indeed, God has graciously given you all those who are sailing with you.'

When it was about daylight, Paul urged them all to take food, saying, “Today is the fourteenth day that you have been waiting and going without food, having eaten nothing.

You who say, “You must not commit adultery” ​— ​do you commit adultery? You who detest idols, do you rob temples?

God has not rejected his people whom he foreknew. Or don't you know what the Scripture says in the passage about Elijah ​— ​how he pleads with God against Israel?

In the same way also he took the cup, after supper, and said, “This cup is the new covenant in my blood. Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.”

But someone somewhere has testified:

What is man that you remember him,

or the son of man that you care for him?

saying:

I will proclaim your name to my brothers and sisters;

I will sing hymns to you in the congregation.

he again specifies a certain day ​— ​today. He specified this speaking through David after such a long time:

Today, if you hear his voice,

do not harden your hearts.

I will indeed bless you, and I will greatly multiply you.

And each person will not teach his fellow citizen,[fn]

and each his brother or sister, saying, “Know the Lord,”

because they will all know me,

from the least to the greatest of them.

saying, This is the blood of the covenant that God has ordained for you.

After he says above, You did not desire or delight in sacrifices and offerings, whole burnt offerings and sin offerings (which are offered according to the law),

His voice shook the earth at that time, but now he has promised, Yet once more I will shake not only the earth but also the heavens.

The one who says, “I have come to know him,” and yet doesn't keep his commands, is a liar, and the truth is not in him.

The one who says he remains in him should walk just as he walked.

The one who says he is in the light but hates his brother or sister is in the darkness until now.

for the one who greets him shares in his evil works.

It was about these that Enoch, in the seventh generation from Adam, prophesied: “Look! The Lord comes with tens of thousands of his holy ones

When I saw him, I fell at his feet like a dead man. He laid his right hand on me and said, “Don't be afraid. I am the First and the Last,

“Don't harm the earth or the sea or the trees until we seal the servants of our God on their foreheads.”

Then one of the elders asked me, “Who are these people in white robes, and where did they come from? ”

So I went to the angel and asked him to give me the little scroll. He said to me, “Take and eat it; it will be bitter in your stomach, but it will be as sweet as honey in your mouth.”

Then I was given a measuring reed like a rod,[fn] with these words: “Go[fn] and measure the temple of God and the altar, and count those who worship there.

It deceives those who live on the earth because of the signs that it is permitted to perform in the presence of the beast, telling those who live on the earth to make an image[fn] of the beast who was wounded by the sword and yet lived.

And another, a second angel, followed, saying, “It has fallen, Babylon the Great has fallen.[fn] She made all the nations drink the wine of her sexual immorality,[fn] which brings wrath.”

Yet another angel, who had authority over fire, came from the altar, and he called with a loud voice to the one who had the sharp sickle, “Use your sharp sickle and gather the clusters of grapes from the vineyard of the earth, because its grapes have ripened.”

Then one of the seven angels who had the seven bowls came and spoke with me: “Come, I will show you the judgment of the notorious prostitute[fn] who is seated on many[fn] waters.

He called out in a mighty voice:

It has fallen,[fn]

Babylon the Great has fallen!

She has become a home for demons,

a haunt for every unclean spirit,

a haunt for every unclean bird,

and a haunt[fn] for every unclean and despicable beast.[fn]

Then a mighty angel picked up a stone like a large millstone and threw it into the sea, saying,

In this way, Babylon the great city

will be thrown down violently

and never be found again.

Then I saw an angel standing in the sun, and he called out in a loud voice, saying to all the birds flying high overhead, “Come, gather together for the great supper of God,

Then one of the seven angels, who had held the seven bowls filled with the seven last plagues, came and spoke with me: “Come, I will show you the bride, the wife of the Lamb.”
