He said to them, “Have you never read what David and those who were with him did when he was in need and hungry —
He answered them, “The secret of the kingdom of God has been given to you, but to those outside, everything comes in parables
He also said to them, “Is a lamp brought in to be put under a basket or under a bed? Isn't it to be put on a lampstand?
And he said to them, “Pay attention to what you hear. By the measure you use, it will be measured to you — and more will be added to you.
And he said, “With what can we compare the kingdom of God, or what parable can we use to describe it?
Immediately Jesus realized that power had gone out from him. He turned around in the crowd and said, “Who touched my clothes? ”
Jesus said to them, “A prophet is not without honor except in his hometown, among his relatives, and in his household.”
King Herod heard about it, because Jesus's name had become well known. Some[fn] said, “John the Baptist has been raised from the dead, and that's why miraculous powers are at work in him.”
He also said to them, “You have a fine way of invalidating God's command in order to set up[fn] your tradition!
Then he said to them, “Truly I tell you, there are some standing here who will not taste death until they see the kingdom of God come in power.”
For he was teaching his disciples and telling them, “The Son of Man is going to be betrayed[fn] into the hands of men. They will kill him, and after he is killed, he will rise three days later.”
While Jesus was teaching in the temple, he asked, “How can the scribes say that the Messiah is the son of David?
He also said in his teaching, “Beware of the scribes, who want to go around in long robes and who want greetings in the marketplaces,
But he kept insisting, “If I have to die with you, I will never deny you.” And they all said the same thing.
And he said, “Abba,[fn] Father! All things are possible for you. Take this cup away from me. Nevertheless, not what I will, but what you will.”
Pilate said to them, “Why? What has he done wrong? ”
But they shouted all the more, “Crucify him! ”
Then looking up at his disciples, he said:
Blessed are you who are poor,
because the kingdom of God is yours.
He told them, “The harvest is abundant, but the workers are few. Therefore, pray to the Lord of the harvest to send out workers into his harvest.
But the leader of the synagogue, indignant because Jesus had healed on the Sabbath, responded by telling the crowd, “There are six days when work should be done; therefore come on those days and be healed and not on the Sabbath day.”
“So he summoned each one of his master's debtors. ‘How much do you owe my master? ' he asked the first one.
Then he told them, “Nation will be raised up against nation, and kingdom against kingdom.
Then Jesus said, “Father, forgive them, because they do not know what they are doing.”[fn] And they divided his clothes and cast lots.
So when he was raised from the dead, his disciples remembered that he had said this, and they believed the Scripture and the statement Jesus had made.
This is why the Jews began trying all the more to kill him: Not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal to God.
He said, “This is why I told you that no one can come to me unless it is granted to him by the Father.”
He was referring to Judas, Simon Iscariot's son,[fn] one of the Twelve, because he was going to betray him.
Some said, “He's the one.” Others were saying, “No, but he looks like him.”
He kept saying, “I'm the one.”
The crowd standing there heard it and said it was thunder. Others said, “An angel has spoken to him.”
Now the entire group of those who believed were of one heart and mind, and no one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but instead they held everything in common.
“I remembered the word of the Lord, how he said, ‘John baptized with water, but you will be baptized with the Holy Spirit.'
“Now as John was completing his mission, he said, ‘Who do you think I am? I am not the one. But one is coming after me, and I am not worthy to untie the sandals on his feet.'
After three days he called together the leaders of the Jews. When they had gathered he said to them, “Brothers, although I have done nothing against our people or the customs of our ancestors, I was delivered as a prisoner from Jerusalem into the hands of the Romans.
