“The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners! ’ Yet wisdom is vindicated[fn] by her deeds.”[fn]

Jesus went with them, and when he was not far from the house, the centurion sent friends to tell him, “Lord, don’t trouble yourself, since I am not worthy to have you come under my roof.

He also said to them, “Suppose one of you[fn] has a friend and goes to him at midnight and says to him, ‘Friend, lend me three loaves of bread,

“I tell you, even though he won’t get up and give him anything because he is his friend, yet because of his friend’s shameless boldness,[fn] he will get up and give him as much as he needs.

“I say to you, my friends, don’t fear those who kill the body, and after that can do nothing more.

“But when you are invited, go and sit in the lowest place, so that when the one who invited you comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up higher.’ You will then be honored in the presence of all the other guests.
