“Only be on your guard and diligently watch yourselves, so that you don’t forget the things your eyes have seen and so that they don’t slip from your mind[fn] as long as you live. Teach them to your children and your grandchildren.
“The day you stood before the LORD your God at Horeb, the LORD said to me, ‘Assemble the people before me, and I will let them hear my words, so that they may learn to fear me all the days they live on the earth and may instruct their children.’
“He did not make this covenant with our ancestors, but with all of us who are alive here today.
“For who out of all humanity has heard the voice of the living God speaking from the fire, as we have, and lived?
“Do this so that you may fear the LORD your God all the days of your life by keeping all his statutes and commands I am giving you, your son, and your grandson, and so that you may have a long life.
“The LORD your God will drive out these nations before you little by little. You will not be able to destroy them all at once; otherwise, the wild animals will become too numerous for you.

Making a vow, she pleaded, “LORD of Armies, if you will take notice of your servant’s affliction, remember and not forget me, and give your servant a son, I will give him to the LORD all the days of his life, and his hair will never be cut.”[fn]
“Please, my lord,” she said, “as surely as you live, my lord, I am the woman who stood here beside you praying to the LORD.
Even before the fat was burned, the priest’s servant would come and say to the one who was sacrificing, “Give the priest some meat to roast, because he won’t accept boiled meat from you — only raw.”
“As surely as the LORD lives who saves Israel, even if it is because of my son Jonathan, he must die! ” Not one of the troops answered him.

Then David responded, “Who am I, and what is my family or my father’s clan in Israel that I should become the king’s son-in-law? ”
Saul listened to Jonathan’s advice and swore an oath: “As surely as the LORD lives, David will not be killed.”
But David said, “Your father certainly knows that I have found favor with you. He has said, ‘Jonathan must not know of this, or else he will be grieved.’ ” David also swore, “As surely as the LORD lives and as you yourself live, there is but a step between me and death.”
“Then I will send a servant and say, ‘Go and find the arrows! ’ Now, if I expressly say to the servant, ‘Look, the arrows are on this side of you — get them,’ then come, because as the LORD lives, it is safe for you and there is no problem.
“Then say this: ‘Long life to you,[fn] and peace to you, peace to your family, and peace to all that is yours.
“Now my lord, as surely as the LORD lives and as you yourself live — it is the LORD who kept you from participating in bloodshed and avenging yourself by your own hand—may your enemies and those who intend to harm my lord be like Nabal.
“Someone is pursuing you and intends to take your life. My lord’s life is tucked safely in the place[fn] where the LORD your God protects the living, but he is flinging away your enemies’ lives like stones from a sling.
“Otherwise, as surely as the LORD God of Israel lives, who prevented me from harming you, if you had not come quickly to meet me, Nabal wouldn’t have had any males[fn] left by morning light.”
David added, “As the LORD lives, the LORD will certainly strike him down: either his day will come and he will die, or he will go into battle and perish.
“What you have done is not good. As the LORD lives, all of you deserve to die[fn] since you didn’t protect your lord, the LORD’s anointed. Now look around; where are the king’s spear and water jug that were by his head? ”
Then Saul swore to her by the LORD: “As surely as the LORD lives, no punishment will come to you[fn] from this.”
