Let them tell the righteous acts of the LORD,

the righteous deeds of his villagers in Israel,

with the voices of the singers at the watering places.[fn]

Samuel told Saul, “The LORD sent me to anoint you as king over his people Israel. Now, listen to the words of the LORD.

Saul listened to Jonathan’s advice and swore an oath: “As surely as the LORD lives, David will not be killed.”

When David finished saying these things to him, Saul replied, “Is that your voice, David my son? ” Then Saul wept aloud

Then David accepted what she had brought him and said, “Go home in peace. See, I have heard what you said and have granted your request.”

Saul recognized David’s voice and asked, “Is that your voice, my son David? ”

“It is my voice, my lord and king,” David said.

When the woman saw Samuel, she screamed, and then she asked Saul, “Why did you deceive me? You are Saul! ”

David and the troops with him wept loudly until they had no strength left to weep.

When they buried Abner in Hebron, the king wept aloud at Abner’s tomb. All the people wept,

“When you hear the sound of marching in the tops of the balsam trees, act decisively, for then the LORD will have gone out ahead of you to strike down the army of the Philistines.”

He and the whole house of Israel were bringing up the ark of the LORD with shouts and the sound of the ram’s horn.

On the seventh day the baby died. But David’s servants were afraid to tell him the baby was dead. They said, “Look, while the baby was alive, we spoke to him, and he wouldn’t listen to us. So how can we tell him the baby is dead? He may do something desperate.”

But he refused to listen to her, and because he was stronger than she was, he disgraced her by raping her.

Then Absalom sent agents throughout the tribes of Israel with this message: “When you hear the sound of the ram’s horn, you are to say, ‘Absalom has become king in Hebron! ’ ”

But the king covered his face and cried loudly, “My son Absalom! Absalom, my son, my son! ”
