“In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father in heaven.

Now when John heard in prison what the Christ was doing, he sent a message through his disciples

“The Son of Man came eating and drinking, and they say, ‘Look, a glutton and a drunkard, a friend of tax collectors and sinners! ’ Yet wisdom is vindicated[fn] by her deeds.”[fn]

“Therefore do whatever they tell you, and observe it. But don’t do what they do, because they don’t practice what they teach.

“They do everything[fn] to be seen by others: They enlarge their phylacteries and lengthen their tassels.[fn]

Aware of this, Jesus said to them, “Why are you bothering this woman? She has done a noble thing for me.

“It is like a man on a journey, who left his house, gave authority to his servants, gave each one his work, and commanded the doorkeeper to be alert.

Jesus replied, “Leave her alone. Why are you bothering her? She has done a noble thing for me.

“Therefore, you are witnesses that you approve[fn] the deeds of your fathers, for they killed them, and you build their monuments.[fn]

“What things? ” he asked them.

So they said to him, “The things concerning Jesus of Nazareth, who was a prophet powerful in action and speech before God and all the people,

“This is the judgment: The light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than the light because their deeds were evil.

“My food is to do the will of him who sent me and to finish his work,” Jesus told them.

“For the Father loves the Son and shows him everything he is doing, and he will show him greater works than these so that you will be amazed.

“But I have a greater testimony than John’s because of the works that the Father has given me to accomplish. These very works I am doing testify about me that the Father has sent me.

“What can we do to perform the works of God? ” they asked.

So his brothers said to him, “Leave here and go to Judea so that your disciples can see your works that you are doing.

“The world cannot hate you, but it does hate me because I testify about it ​— ​that its works are evil.

“I performed one work, and you are all amazed,” Jesus answered.

“Our father is Abraham,” they replied.

“If you were Abraham’s children,” Jesus told them, “you would do what Abraham did.

“You’re doing what your father does.”

“We weren’t born of sexual immorality,” they said. “We have one Father ​— ​God.”

“Neither this man nor his parents sinned,” Jesus answered. “This came about so that God’s works might be displayed in him.

“I did tell you and you don’t believe,” Jesus answered them. “The works that I do in my Father’s name testify about me.

Jesus replied, “I have shown you many good works from the Father. For which of these works are you stoning me? ”

“If I am not doing my Father’s works, don’t believe me.

“Don’t you believe that I am in the Father and the Father is in me? The words I speak to you I do not speak on my own. The Father who lives in me does his works.

“If I had not done the works among them that no one else has done, they would not be guilty of sin. Now they have seen and hated both me and my Father.

“I have glorified you on the earth by completing the work you gave me to do.

“So in the present case, I tell you, stay away from these men and leave them alone. For if this plan or this work is of human origin, it will fail;

“So Moses was educated in all the wisdom of the Egyptians and was powerful in his speech and actions.

“They even made a calf in those days, offered sacrifice to the idol, and were celebrating what their hands had made.

In Joppa there was a disciple named Tabitha (which is translated Dorcas). She was always doing good works and acts of charity.

As they were worshiping[fn] the Lord and fasting, the Holy Spirit said, “Set apart for me Barnabas and Saul for the work to which I have called them.”

“Look, you scoffers,

marvel and vanish away,

because I am doing a work in your days,

a work that you will never believe,

even if someone were to explain it to you.”

From there they sailed back to Antioch where they had been commended to the grace of God for the work they had now completed.

But Paul insisted that they should not take along this man who had deserted them in Pamphylia and had not gone on with them to the work.

“Instead, I preached to those in Damascus first, and to those in Jerusalem and in all the region of Judea, and to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, and do works worthy of repentance.

He will repay each one according to his works:

They show that the work of the law[fn] is written on their hearts. Their consciences confirm this. Their competing thoughts either accuse or even excuse them[fn]

For no one will be justified[fn] in his sight by the works of the law, because the knowledge of sin comes through the law.

Where, then, is boasting? It is excluded. By what kind of law?[fn] By one of works? No, on the contrary, by a law[fn] of faith.
