“You have heard that it was said to our ancestors, Do not murder, and whoever murders will be subject to judgment.

“Truly I tell you, it will be more tolerable on the day of judgment for the land of Sodom and Gomorrah than for that town.

“But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon on the day of judgment than for you.

“But I tell you, it will be more tolerable for the land of Sodom on the day of judgment than for you.”

Here is my servant whom I have chosen,

my beloved in whom I delight;

I will put my Spirit on him,

and he will proclaim justice to the nations.

He will not break a bruised reed,

and he will not put out a smoldering wick,

until he has led justice to victory.[fn]

“I tell you that on the day of judgment people will have to account for every careless[fn] word they speak.[fn]

“The men of Nineveh will stand up at the judgment with this generation and condemn it, because they repented at Jonah’s preaching; and look ​— ​something greater than Jonah is here.

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! You pay a tenth of[fn] mint, dill, and cumin, and yet you have neglected the more important matters of the law ​— ​justice, mercy, and faithfulness.[fn] These things should have been done without neglecting the others.

“But it will be more tolerable for Tyre and Sidon at the judgment than for you.

“The queen of the south will rise up at the judgment with the men of this generation and condemn them, because she came from the ends of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon, and look ​— ​something greater than Solomon is here.

“But woe to you Pharisees! You give a tenth[fn] of mint, rue, and every kind of herb, and you bypass[fn] justice and love for God.[fn] These things you should have done without neglecting the others.

“This is the judgment: The light has come into the world, and people loved darkness rather than the light because their deeds were evil.

“The Father, in fact, judges no one but has given all judgment to the Son,

“Truly I tell you, anyone who hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life and will not come under judgment but has passed from death to life.

“And he has granted him the right to pass judgment, because he is the Son of Man.

“and come out ​— ​those who have done good things, to the resurrection of life, but those who have done wicked things, to the resurrection of condemnation.

“Stop judging according to outward appearances; rather judge according to righteous judgment.”

“And if I do judge, my judgment is true, because it is not I alone who judge, but I and the Father who sent me.

“Now is the judgment of this world. Now the ruler of this world will be cast out.

“When he comes, he will convict the world about sin, righteousness, and judgment:

“and about judgment, because the ruler of this world has been judged.

In his humiliation justice was denied him.

Who will describe his generation?

For his life is taken from the earth.

It is clear evidence of God’s righteous judgment that you will be counted worthy of God’s kingdom, for which you also are suffering,

Some people’s sins are obvious, preceding them to judgment, but the sins of others surface[fn] later.

And just as it is appointed for people to die once ​— ​and after this, judgment ​— ​

but a terrifying expectation of judgment and the fury of a fire about to consume the adversaries.

For judgment is without mercy to the one who has not shown mercy. Mercy triumphs over judgment.

Above all, my brothers and sisters, do not swear, either by heaven or by earth or with any other oath. But let your “yes” mean “yes,” and your “no” mean “no,” so that you won’t fall under judgment.[fn]

By the same word, the present heavens and earth are stored up for fire, being kept for the day of judgment and destruction of the ungodly.

In this, love is made complete with us so that we may have confidence in the day of judgment, because as he is, so also are we in this world.

I heard the altar say,

Yes, Lord God, the Almighty,

true and just are your judgments.

They will stand far off in fear of her torment, saying,

Woe, woe, the great city,

Babylon, the mighty city!

For in a single hour

your judgment has come.

because his judgments are true[fn] and righteous,

because he has judged the notorious prostitute

who corrupted the earth with her sexual immorality;

and he has avenged the blood of his servants

that was on her hands.
