μύρον, μύρου, τό (the grammarians derive it from μύρῳ to flow, accordingly, a flowing juice, trickling sap: but probably more correct to regard it as an oriental word akin to μύρρα, Hebrew מֹר, מור; (Fick (i. 836) connects it with the root, smar, 'to smear', with which Vanicek, 1198f associates σμύρνα, μύρτος, etc.; cf. Curtius, p. 714)), ointment: Matthew 26:7, 9 Rec., 12; Mark 14:3-5; Luke 7:37; Luke 23:56; John 11:2; John 12:3, 5; Revelation 18:13; distinguished from ἔλαιον (which see and see Trench, Synonyms, § xxxviii.), Luke 7:46.
