The LORD said to Moses, “I am going to come to you in a dense cloud, so that the people will hear when I speak with you and will always believe you.” Moses reported the people’s words to the LORD,
“Even the priests who come near the LORD must consecrate themselves, or the LORD will break out in anger against them.”
“However, if the ox was in the habit of goring, and its owner has been warned yet does not restrain it, and it kills a man or a woman, the ox must be stoned, and its owner must also be put to death.
“When a man’s ox injures his neighbor’s ox and it dies, they must sell the live ox and divide its proceeds; they must also divide the dead animal.
Moses said to the LORD, “Look, you have told me, ‘Lead this people up,’ but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. You said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor with me.’
The LORD answered Moses, “I will do this very thing you have asked, for you have found favor with me, and I know you by name.”
“No one may go up with you; in fact, no one should be seen anywhere on the mountain. Even the flocks and herds are not to graze in front of that mountain.”
“You may also purchase them from the aliens residing with you, or from their families living among you — those born in your land. These may become your property.
“then I will act with hostility toward you; I also will strike you seven times for your sins.
“Yet in spite of this, while they are in the land of their enemies, I will not reject or abhor them so as to destroy them and break my covenant with them, since I am the LORD their God.
The riffraff[fn] among them had a strong craving for other food. The Israelites wept again and said, “Who will feed us meat?
They said, “Does the LORD speak only through Moses? Does he not also speak through us? ” And the LORD heard it.
They reported to Moses, “We went into the land where you sent us. Indeed it is flowing with milk and honey, and here is some of its fruit.
“However, the people living in the land are strong, and the cities are large and fortified. We also saw the descendants of Anak there.
“He has brought you near, and all your fellow Levites who are with you, but you are pursuing the priesthood as well.
“Is it not enough that you brought us up from a land flowing with milk and honey to kill us in the wilderness? Do you also have to appoint yourself as ruler over us?
“But also bring your relatives with you from the tribe of Levi, your ancestral tribe, so they may join you and assist you and your sons in front of the tent of the testimony.
“They are to perform duties for you and for the whole tent. They must not come near the sanctuary equipment or the altar; otherwise, both they and you will die.
“You are to present an offering to the LORD from every tenth you receive from the Israelites. Give some of it to the priest Aaron as an offering to the LORD.
“Please stay here overnight as the others did, so that I may find out what else the LORD has to tell me.”
“The donkey saw me and turned away from me these three times. If she had not turned away from me, I would have killed you by now and let her live.”
Ships will come from the coast of Kittim;
they will carry out raids against Asshur and Eber,
but they too will come to destruction.
“After you have seen it, you will also be gathered to your people, as Aaron your brother was.
“Where can we go? Our brothers have made us lose heart,[fn] saying: The people are larger and taller than we are; the cities are large, fortified to the heavens. We also saw the descendants of the Anakim there.’
“The LORD was angry with me also because of you and said, ‘You will not enter there either.
“You may purchase food from them, so that you may eat, and buy water from them to drink.
“Indeed, the LORD’s hand was against them, to eliminate them from the camp until they had all perished.
“So the LORD our God also handed over King Og of Bashan and his whole army to us. We struck him until there was no survivor left.
“until the LORD gives rest to your brothers as he has to you, and they also take possession of the land the LORD your God is giving them across the Jordan. Then each of you may return to his possession that I have given you.
“The LORD your God will also send hornets against them until all the survivors and those hiding from you perish.
“I was afraid of the fierce anger the LORD had directed against you, because he was about to destroy you. But again the LORD listened to me on that occasion.
“The LORD was angry enough with Aaron to destroy him. But I prayed for Aaron at that time also.
“I stayed on the mountain forty days and forty nights like the first time. The LORD also listened to me on this occasion; he agreed not to annihilate you.
“be careful not to be ensnared by their ways after they have been destroyed before you. Do not inquire about their gods, asking, ‘How did these nations worship their gods? I’ll also do the same.’
“You must not do the same to the LORD your God, because they practice every detestable act, which the LORD hates, for their gods. They even burn their sons and daughters in the fire to their gods.
“If a man is discovered having sexual relations with another man’s wife, both the man who had sex with the woman and the woman must die. You must purge the evil from Israel.
“No one of illegitimate birth may enter the LORD’s assembly; none of his descendants, even to the tenth generation, may enter the LORD’s assembly.
“No Ammonite or Moabite may enter the LORD’s assembly; none of their descendants, even to the tenth generation, may ever enter the LORD’s assembly.
“Do not bring a female prostitute’s wages or a male prostitute’s[fn] earnings into the house of the LORD your God to fulfill any vow, because both are detestable to the LORD your God.
“Then you will say in the presence of the LORD your God:
I have taken the consecrated portion out of my house; I have also given it to the Levites, resident aliens, fatherless children, and widows, according to all the commands you gave me. I have not violated or forgotten your commands.
“The LORD will also afflict you with every sickness and plague not recorded in the book of this law, until you are destroyed.
“Outside, the sword will take their children,
and inside, there will be terror;
the young man and the young woman will be killed,
the infant and the gray-haired man.
“until the LORD gives your brothers rest, as he has given you, and they too possess the land the LORD your God is giving them. You may then return to the land of your inheritance and take possession of what Moses the LORD’s servant gave you on the east side of the Jordan.”
“Now please swear to me by the LORD that you will also show kindness to my father’s family, because I showed kindness to you. Give me a sure sign[fn]
They told Joshua, “The LORD has handed over the entire land to us. Everyone who lives in the land is also panicking because of us.”[fn]
