Do not hide your face from me in my day of trouble.
Listen closely to me;
answer me quickly when I call.
The one who shuts his ears to the cry of the poor
will himself also call out and not be answered.
Listen closely,[fn] pay attention to the words of the wise,
and apply your mind to my knowledge.
A person who is passing by and meddles in a quarrel that’s not his
is like one who grabs a dog by the ears.
All things[fn] are wearisome,
more than anyone can say.
The eye is not satisfied by seeing
or the ear filled with hearing.
I heard the LORD of Armies say:
Indeed, many houses will become desolate,
grand and lovely ones without inhabitants.
Make the minds[fn] of these people dull;
deafen their ears and blind their eyes;
otherwise they might see with their eyes
and hear with their ears,
understand with their minds,
turn back, and be healed.
His delight will be in the fear of the LORD.
He will not judge
by what he sees with his eyes,
he will not execute justice
by what he hears with his ears,
The LORD of Armies has directly revealed to me:
“This iniquity will not be wiped out for you people as long as you live.”[fn]
The Lord GOD of Armies has spoken.
and whenever you turn to the right or to the left, your ears will hear this command behind you: “This is the way. Walk in it.”
Then the eyes of those who see will not be closed,
and the ears of those who hear will listen.
The one who lives righteously
and speaks rightly,
who refuses profit from extortion,
whose hand never takes a bribe,
who stops his ears from listening to murderous plots
and shuts his eyes against evil schemes —
Then Eliakim, Shebna, and Joah said to the royal spokesman, “Please speak to your servants in Aramaic, since we understand it. Don’t speak to us in Hebrew[fn] within earshot of the people who are on the wall.”
Listen closely, LORD, and hear; open your eyes, LORD, and see. Hear all the words that Sennacherib has sent to mock the living God.
Because your raging against me
and your arrogance have reached my ears,
I will put my hook in your nose
and my bit in your mouth;
I will make you go back
the way you came.
“Though seeing many things,[fn] you pay no attention.
Though his ears are open, he does not listen.”
“You have never heard; you have never known;
for a long time your ears have not been open.
For I knew that you were very treacherous,
and were known as a rebel from birth.
“Yet as you listen, the children
that you have been deprived of will say,
‘This place is too small for me;
make room for me so that I may settle.’
The Lord GOD has given me
the tongue of those who are instructed
to know how to sustain the weary with a word.
He awakens me each morning;
he awakens my ear to listen like those being instructed.
“Pay attention and come to me;
listen, so that you will live.
I will make a permanent covenant with you
on the basis of the faithful kindnesses of David.[fn]
“Go and announce directly to Jerusalem that this is what the LORD says:
I remember the loyalty of your youth,
your love as a bride —
how you followed me in the wilderness,
in a land not sown.
“Hear this,
you foolish and senseless[fn] people.
They have eyes, but they don’t see.
They have ears, but they don’t hear.
“Yet they didn’t listen or pay attention but followed their own advice and their own stubborn, evil heart. They went backward and not forward.
“However, my people wouldn’t listen to me or pay attention but became obstinate; they did more evil than their ancestors.
Now hear the word of the LORD, you women.
Pay attention to[fn] the words from his mouth.
Teach your daughters a lament
and one another a dirge,
“Yet they would not obey or pay attention; each one followed the stubbornness of his evil heart. So I brought on them all the curses of this covenant, because they had not done what I commanded them to do.”
“They wouldn’t listen or pay attention but became obstinate, not listening or accepting discipline.
“Say, ‘Hear the word of the LORD, kings of Judah and residents of Jerusalem. This is what the LORD of Armies, the God of Israel, says: I am going to bring such a disaster on this place that everyone who hears about it will shudder[fn]
