“If a person schemes and willfully[fn] acts against his neighbor to murder him, you must take him from my altar to be put to death.
“But if, in fact, the animal was stolen from his custody, he must make restitution to its owner.
“When a man borrows an animal from his neighbor, and it is injured or dies while its owner is not there with it, the man must make full restitution.
“If its owner is there with it, the man does not have to make restitution. If it was rented, the loss is covered by[fn] its rental price.
“If a man seduces a virgin who is not engaged, and he sleeps with her, he must certainly pay the bridal price for her to be his wife.
“If you lend silver to my people, to the poor person among you, you must not be like a creditor to him; you must not charge him interest.
“Do the same with your cattle and your flock. Let them stay with their mothers for seven days, but on the eighth day you are to give them to me.
“You must not spread a false report. Do not join[fn] the wicked to be a malicious witness.
“If you see the donkey of someone who hates you lying helpless under its load, and you want to refrain from helping it, you must help with it.[fn]
“Moses alone is to approach the LORD, but the others are not to approach, and the people are not to go up with him.”
Moses took the blood, splattered it on the people, and said, “This is the blood of the covenant that the LORD has made with you concerning all these words.”
He told the elders, “Wait here for us until we return to you. Aaron and Hur are here with you. Whoever has a dispute should go to them.”
When Moses entered the tent, the pillar of cloud would come down and remain at the entrance to the tent, and the LORD would speak with Moses.
Moses said to the LORD, “Look, you have told me, ‘Lead this people up,’ but you have not let me know whom you will send with me. You said, ‘I know you by name, and you have also found favor with me.’
“How will it be known that I and your people have found favor with you unless you go with us? I and your people will be distinguished by this from all the other people on the face of the earth.”
“No one may go up with you; in fact, no one should be seen anywhere on the mountain. Even the flocks and herds are not to graze in front of that mountain.”
The LORD came down in a cloud, stood with him there, and proclaimed his name, “the LORD.”
And the LORD responded, “Look, I am making a covenant. In the presence of all your people I will perform wonders that have never been done[fn] in the whole earth or in any nation. All the people you live among will see the LORD’s work, for what I am doing with you is awe-inspiring.
Moses was there with the LORD forty days and forty nights; he did not eat food or drink water. He wrote the Ten Commandments, the words of the covenant, on the tablets.
“a woman who is in her menstrual period; anyone who has a discharge, whether male or female; and a man who sleeps with a woman who is unclean.”
“Whatever the land produces during the Sabbath year can be food for you — for yourself, your male or female slave, and the hired worker or alien who resides with you.
“If your brother becomes destitute and cannot sustain himself among[fn] you, you are to support him as an alien or temporary resident, so that he can continue to live among you.
“Do not profit or take interest from him, but fear your God and let your brother live among you.
“If your brother among you becomes destitute and sells himself to you, you must not force him to do slave labor.
“Let him stay with you as a hired worker or temporary resident; he may work for you until the Year of Jubilee.
“Then he and his children are to be released from you, and he may return to his clan and his ancestral property.
“You may also purchase them from the aliens residing with you, or from their families living among you — those born in your land. These may become your property.
“If an alien or temporary resident living among you prospers, but your brother living near him becomes destitute and sells himself to the alien living among you, or to a member of the resident alien’s clan,
“The one who purchased him is to calculate the time from the year he sold himself to him until the Year of Jubilee. The price of his sale will be determined by the number of years. It will be set for him like the daily wages of a hired worker.
“He will stay with him like a man hired year by year. A resident alien is not to rule over him harshly in your sight.
“If he is not redeemed in any of these ways, he and his children are to be released at the Year of Jubilee.
“If you act with hostility toward me and are unwilling to obey me, I will multiply your plagues seven times for your sins.
“If in spite of these things you do not accept my discipline, but act with hostility toward me,
“then I will act with hostility toward you; I also will strike you seven times for your sins.
“I will act with furious hostility toward you; I will also discipline you seven times for your sins.
“But when they confess their iniquity and the iniquity of their ancestors — their unfaithfulness that they practiced against me, and how they acted with hostility toward me,
“and I acted with hostility toward them and brought them into the land of their enemies — and when their uncircumcised hearts are humbled and they make amends for their iniquity,
The LORD answered Moses, “Bring me seventy men from Israel known to you as elders and officers of the people. Take them to the tent of meeting and have them stand there with you.
“Then I will come down and speak with you there. I will take some of the Spirit who is on you and put the Spirit on them. They will help you bear the burden of the people, so that you do not have to bear it by yourself.
But the men who had gone up with him responded, “We can’t attack the people because they are stronger than we are! ”
“But since my servant Caleb has a different spirit and has remained loyal to me, I will bring him into the land where he has gone, and his descendants will inherit it.
“The Amalekites and Canaanites are right in front of you, and you will fall by the sword. The LORD won’t be with you, since you have turned from following him.”
The people quarreled with Moses and said, “If only we had perished when our brothers perished before the LORD.
He said to them, “Spend the night here, and I will give you the answer the LORD tells me.” So the officials of Moab stayed with Balaam.
Then God said to Balaam, “You are not to go with them. You are not to curse this people, for they are blessed.”
