Then Jacob called his sons and said, “Gather around, and I will tell you what will happen to you in the days to come.[fn]
When the Canaanite inhabitants of the land saw the mourning at the threshing floor of Atad, they said, “This is a solemn mourning on the part of the Egyptians.” Therefore the place is named Abel-mizraim.[fn] It is across the Jordan.
So the king of Egypt summoned the midwives and asked them, “Why have you done this and let the boys live? ”
Then his sister said to Pharaoh’s daughter, “Should I go and call a Hebrew woman who is nursing to nurse the boy for you? ”
When the child grew older, she brought him to Pharaoh’s daughter, and he became her son. She named him Moses,[fn] “Because,” she said, “I drew him out of the water.”
“So where is he? ” he asked his daughters. “Why then did you leave the man behind? Invite him to eat dinner.”
She gave birth to a son whom he named Gershom,[fn] for he said, “I have been a resident alien in a foreign land.”
When the LORD saw that he had gone over to look, God called out to him from the bush, “Moses, Moses! ”
“Here I am,” he answered.
But then Pharaoh called the wise men and sorcerers — the magicians of Egypt, and they also did the same thing by their occult practices.
Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Appeal to the LORD to remove the frogs from me and my people. Then I will let the people go and they can sacrifice to the LORD.”
Then Pharaoh summoned Moses and Aaron and said, “Go sacrifice to your God within the country.”
Pharaoh sent for Moses and Aaron. “I have sinned this time,” he said to them. “The LORD is the righteous one, and I and my people are the guilty ones.
Pharaoh urgently sent for Moses and Aaron and said, “I have sinned against the LORD your God and against you.
Pharaoh summoned Moses and said, “Go, worship the LORD. Even your families may go with you; only your flocks and herds must stay behind.”
Then Moses summoned all the elders of Israel and said to them, “Go, select an animal from the flock according to your families, and slaughter the Passover animal.
He summoned Moses and Aaron during the night and said, “Get out immediately from among my people, both you and the Israelites, and go, worship the LORD as you have said.
They came to Marah, but they could not drink the water at Marah because it was bitter — that is why it was named Marah.[fn]
The house of Israel named the substance manna.[fn] It resembled coriander seed, was white, and tasted like wafers made with honey.
Moses went up the mountain to God, and the LORD called to him from the mountain: “This is what you must say to the house of Jacob and explain to the Israelites:
After Moses came back, he summoned the elders of the people and set before them all these words that the LORD had commanded him.
The LORD came down on Mount Sinai at the top of the mountain. Then the LORD summoned Moses to the top of the mountain, and he went up.
He then took the covenant scroll and read it aloud to the people. They responded, “We will do and obey all that the LORD has commanded.”
The glory of the LORD settled on Mount Sinai, and the cloud covered it for six days. On the seventh day he called to Moses from the cloud.
“Look, I have appointed by name Bezalel son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah.
When Aaron saw this, he built an altar in front of it and made an announcement: “There will be a festival to the LORD tomorrow.”
Now Moses took a tent and pitched it outside the camp, at a distance from the camp; he called it the tent of meeting. Anyone who wanted to consult the LORD would go to the tent of meeting that was outside the camp.
He said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim the name ‘the LORD’ before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.”
The LORD came down in a cloud, stood with him there, and proclaimed his name, “the LORD.”
The LORD passed in front of him and proclaimed:
The LORD — the LORD is a compassionate and gracious God, slow to anger and abounding in faithful love and truth,
“Do not make a treaty with the inhabitants of the land, or else when they prostitute themselves with their gods and sacrifice to their gods, they will invite you, and you will eat their sacrifices.
But Moses called out to them, so Aaron and all the leaders of the community returned to him, and Moses spoke to them.
Moses then said to the Israelites, “Look, the LORD has appointed by name Bezalel son of Uri, son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah.
So Moses summoned Bezalel, Oholiab, and every skilled person in whose heart the LORD had placed wisdom, all whose hearts moved them, to come to the work and do it.
Moses summoned Mishael and Elzaphan, sons of Aaron’s uncle Uzziel, and said to them, “Come here and carry your relatives away from the front of the sanctuary to a place outside the camp.”
“The person who has a case of serious skin disease is to have his clothes torn and his hair hanging loose, and he must cover his mouth and cry out, ‘Unclean, unclean! ’
“Speak to the Israelites and tell them: These are my appointed times, the times of the LORD that you will proclaim as sacred assemblies.
“These are the LORD’s appointed times, the sacred assemblies you are to proclaim at their appointed times.
“On that same day you are to make a proclamation and hold a sacred assembly. You are not to do any daily work. This is to be a permanent statute wherever you live throughout your generations.
“These are the LORD’s appointed times that you are to proclaim as sacred assemblies for presenting food offerings to the LORD, burnt offerings and grain offerings, sacrifices and drink offerings, each on its designated day.
“You are to consecrate the fiftieth year and proclaim freedom in the land for all its inhabitants. It will be your Jubilee, when each of you is to return to his property and each of you to his clan.
“These are the men called from the community; they are leaders of their ancestral tribes, the heads of Israel’s clans.”
So they named that place Kibroth-hattaavah,[fn] because there they buried the people who had craved the meat.
Then the LORD descended in a pillar of cloud, stood at the entrance to the tent, and summoned Aaron and Miriam. When the two of them came forward,
