So it is with the one who sleeps with
another man’s wife;
no one who touches her will go unpunished.
With his mouth the ungodly destroys his neighbor,
but through knowledge the righteous are rescued.
Whoever shows contempt for his neighbor lacks sense,
but a person with understanding keeps silent.
A righteous person is careful in dealing with his neighbor,[fn]
but the ways of the wicked lead them astray.
The one who despises his neighbor sins,
but whoever shows kindness to the poor will be happy.
One with many friends may be harmed,[fn]
but there is a friend who stays closer than a brother.
Don’t take a matter to court hastily.
Otherwise, what will you do afterward
if your opponent[fn] humiliates you?
Seldom set foot in your neighbor’s house;
otherwise, he’ll get sick of you and hate you.
A person giving false testimony against his neighbor
is like a club, a sword, or a sharp arrow.
Oil and incense bring joy to the heart,
and the sweetness of a friend is better than self-counsel.[fn]
Don’t abandon your friend or your father’s friend,
and don’t go to your brother’s house
in your time of calamity;
better a neighbor nearby than a brother far away.
If one blesses his neighbor
with a loud voice early in the morning,
it will be counted as a curse to him.
I saw that all labor and all skillful work is due to one person’s jealousy of another. This too is futile and a pursuit of the wind.[fn]
His mouth is sweetness.
He is absolutely desirable.
This is my love, and this is my friend,
young women of Jerusalem.
The people will oppress one another,
man against man, neighbor against neighbor;
the young will act arrogantly toward the old,
and the worthless toward the honorable.
They will be horrified;
pain and agony will seize them;
they will be in anguish like a woman in labor.
They will look at each other,
their faces flushed with fear.
I will provoke Egyptians against Egyptians;
each will fight against his brother
and each against his friend,
city against city, kingdom against kingdom.
The desert creatures will meet hyenas,
and one wild goat will call to another.
Indeed, the night birds will stay there
and will find a resting place.
However, as a woman may betray her lover,[fn]
so you have betrayed me, house of Israel.
This is the LORD’s declaration.
Therefore, this is what the LORD says:
I am going to place stumbling blocks before these people;
fathers and sons together will stumble over them;
friends and neighbors will also perish.
Instead, if you really correct your ways and your actions, if you act justly toward one another,[fn]
Everyone has to be on guard against his friend.
Don’t trust any brother,
for every brother will certainly deceive,
and every friend spread slander.
Each one betrays his friend;
no one tells the truth.
They have taught their tongues to speak lies;
they wear themselves out doing wrong.
Their tongues are deadly arrows —
they speak deception.
With his mouth
one speaks peaceably with his friend,
but inwardly he sets up an ambush.
“I will make them eat the flesh of their sons and their daughters, and they will eat each other’s flesh in the distressing siege inflicted on them by their enemies who intend to take their life.’
“Many nations will pass by this city and ask one another, ‘Why did the LORD do such a thing to this great city? ’
Woe for the one who builds his palace
through unrighteousness,
his upstairs rooms through injustice,
who makes his neighbor serve without pay
and will not give him his wages,
“Through their dreams that they tell one another, they plan to cause my people to forget my name as their ancestors forgot my name through Baal worship.
“Therefore, take note! I am against the prophets” — the LORD’s declaration — “who steal my words from each other.
“This is what each man is to say to his friend and to his brother: ‘What has the LORD answered? ’ or ‘What has the LORD spoken? ’
“because they have committed an outrage in Israel by committing adultery with their neighbors’ wives and have spoken in my name a lie, which I did not command them. I am he who knows, and I am a witness.” This is the LORD’s declaration.
