The Ammonites Dishonor David’s Men
1 Now it happened H1961 afterwards H310 H3651, that Nahash H5176 the king H4428 of the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 died H4191, and his son H1121 became H4427 king H4427 in H8478 his place H8478.
2 So David H1732 said H559, “I will show H6213 lovingkindness H2617 to Hanun H2586 the son H1121 of Nahash H5176, because H3588 his father H1 showed H6213 lovingkindness H2617 to me.” So David H1732 sent H7971 messengers H4397 to comfort H5162 him concerning H5921 his father H1. And David’s H1732 servants H5650 came H935 into the land H776 of the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 to Hanun H2586 to comfort H5162 him. 3 But the princes H8269 of the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 said H559 to Hanun H2586, “In your eyes H5869, is David H1732 honoring H3513 your father H1 because he has sent H7971 comforters H5162 to you? Have not his servants H5650 come H935 to you to search H2713 and to overthrow H2015 and to spy H7270 out H7270 the land H776?” 4 So Hanun H2586 took H3947 David’s H1732 servants H5650 and shaved H1548 them and cut H3772 off H3772 their garments H4063 in the middle H2677 as far H5704 as their hips H4667, and sent H7971 them away H7971. 5 Then certain persons went H1980 and told H5046 David H1732 about H5921 the men H376. And he sent H7971 to meet H7122 them, for the men H376 were greatly H3966 dishonored H3637. And the king H4428 said H559, “[fn]Stay H3427 at Jericho H3405 until H5704 H834 your beards H2206 grow H6779, and then return H7725.”
6 Then the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 saw H7200 that they had made H887 themselves odious H887 to David H1732. So Hanun H2586 and the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 sent H7971 [fn]1,000 H505 talents H3603 of silver H3701 to hire H7936 for themselves chariots H7393 and horsemen H6571 from Mesopotamia H763, from Aram-maacah H758 H4601, and from Zobah H6678. 7 So they hired H7936 for themselves 32,000 H8147 H7970 H505 chariots H7393, and the king H4428 of Maacah H4601 and his people H5971, who came H935 and camped H2583 before H6440 Medeba H4311. And the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 gathered H622 together from their cities H5892 and came H935 to battle H4421. 8 Then David H1732 heard H8085 of it, and he sent H7971 Joab H3097 and all H3605 the army H6635, the mighty H1368 men H1368. 9 And the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 came H3318 out H3318 and arranged H6186 themselves for battle H4421 at the entrance H6607 of the city H5892. But the kings H4428 who H834 had come H935 were by H905 themselves H905 in the field H7704.
David Defeats Ammon and Aram
10 Then Joab H3097 saw H7200 that the [fn]battle H4421 was set against H413 him in front H6440 and in the rear H268. So he chose H977 from all H3605 the choice H970 men of Israel H3478 and [fn]they arranged H6186 themselves to meet H7122 the Arameans H758.
11 But the remainder H3499 of the people H5971 he put H5414 in the hand H3027 of [fn]Abshai H52 his brother H251; and they arranged H6186 themselves to meet H7122 the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983. 12 And he said H559, “If H518 the Arameans H758 are too H4480 strong H2388 for me, then you shall save H1961 H8668 me; but if H518 the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 are too H4480 strong H2388 for you, then I will save H3467 you. 13 Be strong H2388, and let us show H2388 strength H2388 for the sake H1157 of our people H5971 and for the cities H5892 of our God H430; and may Yahweh H3068 do H6213 what H2896 is H2896 good H2896 in His sight H5869.” 14 So Joab H3097 and the people H5971 who H834 were with him drew H5066 near H5066 before H6440 the Arameans H758 for the battle H4421, and they fled H5127 before H4480 H6440 him. 15 Now the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 saw H7200 that the Arameans H758 fled H5127. So they themselves also H1571 fled H5127 before H4480 H6440 Abshai H52 his brother H251 and came H935 into the city H5892. Then Joab H3097 came H935 to Jerusalem H3389.
16 Then the Arameans H758 saw H7200 that they had been [fn]defeated H5062 by Israel H3478. So they sent H7971 messengers H4397 and brought H3318 out H3318 the Arameans H758 who H834 were beyond H4480 H5676 the [fn]River H5104, and Shophach H7780 the commander H8269 of the army H6635 of Hadadezer H1909 [fn]led H6440 them. 17 And it was told H5046 to David H1732, so he gathered H622 all H3605 Israel H3478 together and crossed H5674 the Jordan H3383, and came H935 upon them and arranged H6186 for battle H6186 against H413 them. So David H1732 arranged H6186 them in battle H4421 to meet H7122 the Arameans H758. And they fought H3898 against H5973 him. 18 But the Arameans H758 fled H5127 before H4480 H6440 Israel H3478, and David H1732 killed H2026 of the Arameans H758 7,000 H7651 H505 charioteers H7393 and 40,000 H705 H505 foot H7273 soldiers H376 H7273, and put H4191 to H4191 death H4191 Shophach H7780 the commander H8269 of the army H6635. 19 Then the servants H5650 of Hadadezer H1909 saw H7200 that they were [fn]defeated H5062 by Israel H3478. So they made H7999 peace H7999 with David H1732 and served H5647 him. And the Arameans H758 were H14 not willing H14 to save H3467 the sons H1121 of Ammon H5983 anymore H5750.
