2 like ^G5613 newborn ^G738 babies ^G1025, long ^G1971 for ^G1971 the [fn]pure ^G97 [fn]milk ^G1051 of ^G3050 the ^G3050 word ^G3050, so ^G2443 that by it you may grow ^G837 [fn]in ^G1519 respect ^G1519 to ^G1519 salvation ^G4991, 3 if ^G1487 you have TASTED ^G1089 [fn]THE KINDNESS ^G5543 OF THE [fn]LORD ^G2962.

4 And coming ^G4334 to Him as to a living ^G2198 stone ^G3037 which has been rejected ^G593 by men ^G444, but is [fn]choice ^G1588 and precious ^G1784 in ^G3844 the ^G3844 sight ^G3844 of ^G3844 God ^G2316, 5 you also ^G2532, as living ^G2198 stones ^G3037, [fn]are being built ^G2026 up ^G2026 as a spiritual ^G4152 house ^G3624 for a holy ^G40 priesthood ^G2406, to offer ^G399 up ^G399 spiritual ^G4152 sacrifices ^G2378 acceptable ^G2144 to God ^G2316 through ^G1223 Jesus ^G2424 Christ ^G5547. 6 For this is contained ^G4023 in [fn]Scripture ^G1124:

“BEHOLD ^G2400, I LAY ^G5087 IN ZION ^G4622 A CHOICE ^G1588 STONE ^G3037, A PRECIOUS ^G1784 CORNER ^G204 stone,

AND HE WHO BELIEVES ^G4100 UPON [fn]HIM WILL NOT BE PUT ^G2617 TO ^G2617 SHAME ^G2617.”

7 This ^G3588 precious ^G5092 value ^G5092, then ^G3767, is for you who believe ^G4100; but for those ^G3588 who disbelieve ^G569,

“THE STONE ^G3037 WHICH ^G3739 THE BUILDERS ^G3618 REJECTED ^G593,

THIS ^G3778 BECAME ^G1096 THE CHIEF ^G2776 CORNER ^G1137 stone,”

8 and,

“A STONE ^G3037 OF STUMBLING ^G4348 AND A ROCK ^G4073 OF OFFENSE ^G4625.”

They stumble ^G4350 because they are disobedient ^G544 to the word ^G3056, and to this ^G3739 stumbling they were also ^G2532 appointed ^G5087.

9 But you are A CHOSEN ^G1588 FAMILY ^G1085, A royal ^G934 PRIESTHOOD ^G2406, A HOLY ^G40 NATION ^G1484, A PEOPLE ^G2992 FOR God’s OWN POSSESSION ^G4047, so ^G3704 that you may proclaim ^G1804 the excellencies ^G703 of Him who has called ^G2564 you out of darkness ^G4655 into His marvelous ^G2298 light ^G5457; 10 for you once ^G4218 were NOT A PEOPLE ^G2992, but now ^G3568 you are THE PEOPLE ^G2992 OF GOD ^G2316; you had NOT RECEIVED ^G1653 MERCY ^G1653, but now ^G3568 you have RECEIVED ^G1653 MERCY ^G1653.

11 Beloved ^G27, I urge ^G3870 you as sojourners ^G3941 and exiles ^G3927 to abstain ^G568 from fleshly ^G4559 lusts ^G1939 which ^G3748 wage ^G4754 war ^G4754 against ^G2596 the soul ^G5590, 12 by keeping ^G2192 your conduct ^G391 excellent ^G2570 among ^G1722 the Gentiles ^G1484, so ^G2443 that in the thing which ^G3739 they slander ^G2635 you as evildoers ^G2555, they may [fn]because ^G1537 of your good ^G2570 works ^G2041, as they observe ^G2029 them, glorify ^G1392 God ^G2316 in the DAY ^G2250 OF [fn]VISITATION ^G1984.

Be Subject to Authority

13 Be subject ^G5293 for the sake ^G1223 of the Lord ^G2962 to every ^G3956 human ^G442 institution ^G2937, whether ^G1535 to a king ^G935 as the one in authority ^G5242,

14 or ^G1535 to governors ^G2232 as sent ^G3992 [fn]by him for the punishment ^G1557 of evildoers ^G2555 and the praise ^G1868 of those who do ^G15 good ^G15. 15 For [fn]such ^G3779 is the will ^G2307 of God ^G2316 that by doing ^G15 good ^G15 you may silence ^G5392 the ignorance ^G56 of foolish ^G878 men ^G444. 16 Act as free ^G1658 people ^G1658, and [fn]do not use ^G2192 your freedom ^G1657 as a covering ^G1942 for evil ^G2549, but use it as slaves ^G1401 of God ^G2316. 17 Honor ^G5091 all ^G3956 people ^G3956, love ^G25 the [fn]brethren ^G81, fear ^G5399 God ^G2316, honor ^G5091 the [fn]king ^G935.

18 Servants ^G3610, be subject ^G5293 to your masters ^G1203 with all ^G3956 fear ^G5401, not only ^G3440 to those ^G3588 who are good ^G18 and considerate ^G1933, but also ^G2532 to those ^G3588 who are [fn]crooked ^G4646. 19 For this ^G3778 finds [fn]favor ^G5485, if ^G1487 for the sake ^G1223 of conscience ^G4893 toward God ^G2316 a person ^G5100 bears ^G5297 up under ^G5297 sorrows ^G3077 when suffering ^G3958 unrighteously ^G95. 20 For what ^G4169 credit ^G2811 is there if ^G1487, when you sin ^G264 and are harshly ^G2852 treated ^G2852, you endure ^G5278? But if ^G1487 when you do ^G15 good ^G15 and suffer ^G3958 for it, you endure ^G5278, this ^G3778 finds favor ^G5485 with God ^G2316.

Christ, Our Example

21 For to this ^G3778 you have been called ^G2564, since ^G3754 Christ ^G5547 also ^G2532 suffered ^G3958 for you, leaving ^G5277 you an example ^G5261 that you should follow ^G1872 in His steps ^G2487, 22 WHO ^G3739 DID ^G4160 NO ^G3756 SIN ^G266, NOR ^G3761 WAS ANY DECEIT ^G1388 FOUND ^G2147 IN HIS MOUTH ^G4750; 23 who being reviled ^G3058, was not reviling ^G486 in ^G486 return ^G486; while suffering ^G3958, He was uttering ^G546 no ^G3756 threats ^G546, but kept entrusting ^G3860 Himself to Him who judges ^G2919 righteously ^G1346. 24 Who ^G846 Himself [fn]bore ^G399 our sins ^G266 in His body ^G4983 on the tree ^G3586, so ^G2443 that having died ^G581 to [fn]sin ^G266, we might live ^G2198 to righteousness ^G1343; by His [fn]WOUNDS ^G3468 YOU WERE HEALED ^G2390. 25 For you were continually straying ^G4105 like ^G5613 sheep ^G4263, but now ^G3568 you have returned ^G1994 to the Shepherd ^G4166 and Overseer ^G1985 of your souls ^G5590.
