Saul Strikes Down the Ammonites

1 And Nahash ^H5176 the Ammonite ^H5984 came ^H5927 up ^H5927 and [fn]besieged ^H2583 H5921 Jabesh-gilead ^H3003 H1568; and all ^H3605 the men ^H376 of Jabesh ^H3003 said ^H559 to Nahash ^H5176, “Cut ^H3772 a covenant ^H1285 with us, and we will serve ^H5647 you.”

2 But Nahash ^H5176 the Ammonite ^H5984 said ^H559 to them, “I will cut ^H3772 it with you on this ^H2088 condition, that I will gouge ^H5365 out ^H5365 the right ^H3225 eye ^H5869 of every ^H3605 one ^H3605 of you, thus I will make ^H7760 it a reproach ^H2781 on all ^H3605 Israel ^H3478.” 3 Then the elders ^H2205 of Jabesh ^H3003 said ^H559 to him, “Let ^H7503 us alone ^H7503 for seven ^H7651 days ^H3117, that we may send ^H7971 messengers ^H4397 throughout ^H3605 the territory ^H1366 of Israel ^H3478. Then, if ^H518 there ^H369 is ^H369 no ^H369 one ^H369 to save ^H3467 us, we will come ^H3318 out ^H3318 to you.” 4 Then the messengers ^H4397 came ^H935 to Gibeah ^H1390 of Saul ^H7586 and spoke ^H1696 these words ^H1697 in the hearing ^H241 of the people ^H5971, and all ^H3605 the people ^H5971 lifted ^H5375 up ^H5375 their voices ^H6963 and wept ^H1058.

5 Now behold ^H2009, Saul ^H7586 was coming ^H935 from the field ^H7704 behind ^H310 the oxen ^H1241, and [fn]he said ^H559, “What ^H4100 is the matter with the people ^H5971 that they weep ^H1058?” So they recounted ^H5608 to him the words ^H1697 of the men ^H376 of Jabesh ^H3003. 6 Then the Spirit ^H7307 of God ^H430 [fn]came ^H6743 upon Saul ^H7586 mightily ^H6743 when he heard ^H8085 these ^H428 words ^H1697, and [fn]he burned ^H2734 with anger ^H639 H2734 exceedingly ^H3966. 7 Then he took ^H3947 a pair ^H6776 of oxen ^H1241 and cut ^H5408 them in ^H5408 pieces ^H5408 and sent ^H7971 them throughout ^H3605 the territory ^H1366 of Israel ^H3478 by the hand ^H3027 of messengers ^H4397, saying ^H559, “Whoever ^H834 does not come ^H3318 out ^H3318 after ^H310 Saul ^H7586 and after ^H310 Samuel ^H8050, so ^H3541 shall it be done ^H6213 to his oxen ^H1241.” Then the dread ^H6343 of Yahweh ^H3068 fell ^H5307 on the people ^H5971, and they came ^H3318 out ^H3318 as one ^H259 man ^H376. 8 And he [fn]numbered ^H6485 them in Bezek ^H966; and the sons ^H1121 of Israel ^H3478 were 300,000 ^{H7969 H3967 H505}, and the men ^H376 of Judah ^H3063 30,000 ^H7970 H505. 9 And they said ^H559 to the messengers ^H4397 who had come ^H935, “Thus ^H3541 you shall say ^H559 to the men ^H376 of Jabesh-gilead ^H3003 H1568, ‘Tomorrow ^H4279, by the time the sun ^H8121 is hot ^H2527, you will have ^H1961 salvation ^H8668.’” So the messengers ^H4397 went ^H935 and told ^H5046 the men ^H376 of Jabesh ^H3003; and they were glad ^H8055. 10 Then the men ^H376 of Jabesh ^H3003 said ^H559, “Tomorrow ^H4279 we will come ^H3318 out ^H3318 to you, and you may do ^H6213 to us whatever ^H3605 seems good ^H2896 in your eyes ^H5869.” 11 Then the next ^H4283 morning ^H4283 Saul ^H7586 put ^H7760 the people ^H5971 in three ^H7969 companies ^H7218; and they came ^H935 into the midst ^H8432 of the camp ^H4264 at the morning ^H1242 watch ^H821 and struck ^H5221 down ^H5221 the Ammonites ^H5983 until ^H5704 the heat ^H2527 of the day ^H3117. Those who survived ^H7604 were scattered ^H6327, so that no ^H3808 two ^H8147 of them were left ^H7604 together ^H3162.

12 Then the people ^H5971 said ^H559 to Samuel ^H8050, “Who ^H4310 is he that said ^H559, ‘Shall Saul ^H7586 reign ^H4427 over ^H5921 us?’ [fn]Bring ^H5414 the men ^H376, that we may put ^H4191 them to ^H4191 death ^H4191.” 13 But Saul ^H7586 said ^H559, “Not a man ^H376 shall be put ^H4191 to ^H4191 death ^H4191 this ^H2088 day ^H3117, for today ^H3117 Yahweh ^H3068 has accomplished ^H6213 salvation ^H8668 in Israel ^H3478.”

14 Then Samuel ^H8050 said ^H559 to the people ^H5971, “Come ^H1980 and let us go ^H1980 to Gilgal ^H1537 and renew ^H2318 the kingdom ^H4410 there ^H8033.” 15 So all ^H3605 the people ^H5971 went ^H1980 to Gilgal ^H1537, and there ^H8033 they made ^H4427 Saul ^H7586 king ^H4427 before ^H6440 Yahweh ^H3068 in Gilgal ^H1537. There ^H8033 they also offered ^H2076 sacrifices ^H2077 of peace ^H8002 offerings ^H8002 before ^H6440 Yahweh ^H3068; and there ^H8033 Saul ^H7586 and all ^H3605 the men ^H376 of Israel ^H3478 were exceedingly ^H3966 glad ^H8055.
