Isaiah Tells Hezekiah Not to Be Afraid

1 Now it happened that when King ^H4428 Hezekiah ^H2396 heard ^H8085 it, he tore ^H7167 his clothes ^H899, covered ^H3680 himself with sackcloth ^H8242, and entered ^H935 the house ^H1004 of Yahweh ^H3068.

2 Then he sent ^H7971 Eliakim ^H471 who ^H834 was over ^H5921 the household ^H1004 with Shebna ^H7644 the scribe ^H5608 and the elders ^H2205 of the priests ^H3548, covered ^H3680 with sackcloth ^H8242, to Isaiah ^H3470 the prophet ^H5030 the son ^H1121 of Amoz ^H531. 3 And they said ^H559 to him, “Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Hezekiah ^H2396, ‘This ^H2088 day ^H3117 is a day ^H3117 of distress ^H6869, reproof ^H8433, and rejection ^H5007; for children ^H1121 have come ^H935 to the point ^H4866 of ^H4866 breaking ^H4866 forth ^H4866, but there ^H369 is ^H369 no ^H369 strength ^H3581 to give ^H3205 birth ^H3205. 4 Perhaps ^H194 Yahweh ^H3068 your God ^H430 will hear ^H8085 all ^H3605 the words ^H1697 of Rabshakeh ^H7262, whom ^H834 his master ^H113 the king ^H4428 of Assyria ^H804 has sent ^H7971 to [fn]reproach ^H2778 the living ^H2416 God ^H430, and will reprove ^H3198 the words ^H1697 which ^H834 Yahweh ^H3068 your God ^H430 has heard ^H8085. Therefore, lift ^H5375 up ^H5375 a prayer ^H8605 for the remnant ^H7611 that is left ^H4672.’” 5 So the servants ^H5650 of King ^H4428 Hezekiah ^H2396 came ^H935 to Isaiah ^H3470. 6 And Isaiah ^H3470 said ^H559 to them, “Thus ^H3541 you shall say ^H559 to your master ^H113, ‘Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068, “Do not be ^H3372 afraid ^H3372 because ^H4480 H6440 of the words ^H1697 that you have heard ^H8085, with which ^H834 the young ^H5288 men ^H5288 of the king ^H4428 of Assyria ^H804 have blasphemed ^H1442 Me. 7 Behold ^H2009, I will put ^H5414 a spirit ^H7307 in him so that he will hear ^H8085 a report ^H8052 and return ^H7725 to his own land ^H776. And I will make him fall ^H5307 by the sword ^H2719 in his own land ^H776.”’”

Sennacherib Deceives Hezekiah

8 Then Rabshakeh ^H7262 returned ^H7725 and found ^H4672 the king ^H4428 of Assyria ^H804 fighting ^H3898 against ^H5921 Libnah ^H3841, for he had heard ^H8085 that [fn]the king had set ^H5265 out ^H5265 from Lachish ^H3923.

9 Then he heard ^H8085 them say ^H559 concerning ^H413 Tirhakah ^H8640 king ^H4428 of [fn]Ethiopia ^H3568, “Behold ^H2009, he has come ^H3318 out ^H3318 to fight ^H3898 against ^H854 you.” So he sent ^H7971 messengers ^H4397 again ^H7725 to Hezekiah ^H2396 saying ^H559, 10 “Thus ^H3541 you shall say ^H559 to Hezekiah ^H2396 king ^H4428 of [fn]Judah ^H3063, ‘Do not let your God ^H430 in whom ^H834 you trust ^H982 deceive ^H5378 you, saying ^H559, “Jerusalem ^H3389 will not be given ^H5414 into the hand ^H3027 of the king ^H4428 of Assyria ^H804.” 11 Behold ^H2009, you have heard ^H8085 what ^H834 the kings ^H4428 of Assyria ^H804 have done ^H6213 to all ^H3605 the lands ^H776, devoting ^H2763 them to destruction ^H2763. So will you be delivered ^H5337? 12 Did the gods ^H430 of [fn]those nations ^H1471 which ^H834 my fathers ^H1 brought ^H7843 to ruin ^H7843 deliver ^H5337 them, even Gozan ^H1470 and Haran ^H2771 and Rezeph ^H7530 and the sons ^H1121 of Eden ^H5729 who ^H834 were in Telassar ^H8515? 13 Where ^H335 is the king ^H4428 of Hamath ^H2574, the king ^H4428 of Arpad ^H774, the king ^H4428 of the city ^H5892 of Sepharvaim ^H5617, and of Hena ^H2012 and Ivvah ^H5755?’”

Hezekiah’s Prayer

14 Then Hezekiah ^H2396 took ^H3947 the [fn]letter ^H5612 from the hand ^H3027 of the messengers ^H4397 and read ^H7121 it, and he went ^H5927 up ^H5927 to the house ^H1004 of Yahweh ^H3068 and [fn]spread ^H6566 it out ^H6566 before ^H6440 Yahweh ^H3068.

15 And Hezekiah ^H2396 prayed ^H6419 before ^H6440 Yahweh ^H3068 and said ^H559, “O Yahweh ^H3068, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478, who is [fn]enthroned ^H3427 above the cherubim ^H3742, You are the God ^H430, You alone ^H905, of all ^H3605 the kingdoms ^H4467 of the earth ^H776. You have made ^H6213 heaven ^H8064 and earth ^H776. 16 Incline ^H5186 Your ear ^H241, O Yahweh ^H3068, and hear ^H8085; open ^H6491 Your eyes ^H5869, O Yahweh ^H3068, and see ^H7200; and listen ^H8085 to the words ^H1697 of Sennacherib ^H5576, who ^H834 sent ^H7971 them to [fn]reproach ^H2778 the living ^H2416 God ^H430. 17 Truly ^H551, O Yahweh ^H3068, the kings ^H4428 of Assyria ^H804 have laid ^H2717 waste ^H2717 the nations ^H1471 and their lands ^H776 18 and have put ^H5414 their gods ^H430 into the fire ^H784, for they were not gods ^H430 but the work ^H4639 of men’s ^H120 hands ^H3027, wood ^H6086 and stone ^H68. So they have destroyed ^H6 them. 19 But now ^H6258, O Yahweh ^H3068 our God ^H430, I pray ^H4994, save ^H3467 us from his hand ^H3027 that all ^H3605 the kingdoms ^H4467 of the earth ^H776 may know ^H3045 that You alone ^H905, O Yahweh ^H3068, are God ^H430.”

Isaiah Speaks of Sennacherib’s Fall

20 Then Isaiah ^H3470 the son ^H1121 of Amoz ^H531 sent ^H7971 word to Hezekiah ^H2396 saying ^H559, “Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478, ‘Because ^H834 you have prayed ^H6419 to Me about ^H413 Sennacherib ^H5576 king ^H4428 of Assyria ^H804, I have heard ^H8085 you.’

21 This ^H2088 is the word ^H1697 that Yahweh ^H3068 has spoken ^H1696 against ^H5921 him:

‘She has despised ^H959 you and mocked ^H3932 you,

The virgin ^H1330 daughter ^H1323 of Zion ^H6726;

She has shaken ^H5128 her head ^H7218 behind ^H310 you,

The daughter ^H1323 of Jerusalem ^H3389!

22 ‘Whom ^H4310 have you [fn]reproached ^H2778 and blasphemed ^H1442?

And against ^H5921 whom ^H4310 have you heightened ^H7311 your voice ^H6963,

And [fn]haughtily ^H4791 lifted ^H5375 up ^H5375 your eyes ^H5869?

Against ^H5921 the Holy ^H6918 One ^H6918 of Israel ^H3478!

23 ‘Through ^H3027 your messengers ^H4397 you have [fn]reproached ^H2778 the Lord ^H136,

And you have said ^H559, “With my many ^H7230 chariots ^H7393

I came ^H5927 up ^H5927 to the heights ^H4791 of the mountains ^H2022,

To the remotest ^H3411 parts ^H3411 of Lebanon ^H3844;

And I [fn]cut ^H3772 down ^H3772 its tall ^H6967 cedars ^H730 and its choice ^H4004 cypresses ^H1265.

And I [fn]entered ^H935 its farthest ^H7093 lodging ^H4411 place ^H4411, its thickest ^H3759 forest ^H3293.

24 “I dug ^H6979 wells and drank ^H8354 foreign ^H2114 waters ^H4325,

And with the sole ^H3709 of my feet ^H6471 I [fn]dried ^H2717 up ^H2717

All ^H3605 the rivers ^H2975 of [fn]Egypt ^H4693.”

25 ‘Have you not heard ^H8085?

Long ^H7350 ago ^H7350 I did ^H6213 it;

From days ^H3117 H6924 of old ^H6924 I formed ^H3335 it.

Now ^H6258 I have brought ^H935 it to pass ^H935,

That you should devastate ^H1961 H7582 fortified ^H1219 cities ^H5892 into ruinous ^H5327 heaps ^H1530.

26 ‘So their inhabitants ^H3427 were short ^H7116 of power ^H3027,

They were dismayed ^H2865 and put ^H954 to ^H954 shame ^H954;

They were as the plant ^H6212 of the field ^H7704 and as the green ^H3419 herb ^H1877,

As grass ^H2682 on the rooftops ^H1406 is scorched ^H7711 before ^H6440 it rises ^H7054.

27 ‘But I know ^H3045 your sitting ^H3427 down ^H3427,

And your going ^H3318 out ^H3318 and your coming ^H935 in ^H935,

And your raging ^H7264 against ^H413 Me.

28 ‘Because ^H3282 of your raging ^H7264 against ^H413 Me,

And because your [fn]presumptuousness ^H7600 has come ^H5927 up ^H5927 to My ears ^H241,

Therefore I will put ^H7760 My hook ^H2397 in your nose ^H639,

And My bridle ^H4964 in your lips ^H8193,

And I will turn ^H7725 you back ^H7725 by the way ^H1870 which ^H834 you came ^H935.

29 ‘Then this ^H2088 shall be the sign ^H226 for you: [fn]you will eat ^H398 this year ^H8141 what ^H5599 grows ^H5599 of its ^H5599 own ^H5599 accord ^H5599, in the second ^H8145 year ^H8141 what ^H7823 springs ^H7823 from the same, and in the third ^H7992 year ^H8141 sow ^H2232, reap ^H7114, plant ^H5193 vineyards ^H3754, and eat ^H398 their fruit ^H6529. 30 And the surviving ^H7604 remnant ^H7604 of the house ^H1004 of Judah ^H3063 will again ^H3254 take root ^H8328 downward ^H4295 and bear ^H6213 fruit ^H6529 upward ^H4605. 31 For out of Jerusalem ^H3389 will go ^H3318 forth ^H3318 a remnant ^H7611, and out of Mount ^H2022 Zion ^H6726 [fn]survivors ^H6413. The zeal ^H7068 of [fn]Yahweh ^H3068 will do ^H6213 this ^H2088.

32 ‘Therefore ^H3651 thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068 concerning ^H413 the king ^H4428 of Assyria ^H804, “He will not come ^H935 to this ^H2088 city ^H5892 or shoot ^H3384 an arrow ^H2671 there ^H8033; and he will not come ^H6923 before ^H6923 it with a shield ^H4043 or ^H3808 throw ^H8210 up ^H8210 a siege ^H5550 ramp ^H5550 against ^H5921 it. 33 By the way ^H1870 that he came ^H935, by the same he will return ^H7725, and he shall not come ^H935 to this ^H2088 city ^H5892,”’ declares ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068. 34 ‘Indeed I will defend ^H1598 this ^H2088 city ^H5892 to save ^H3467 it for My own sake ^H4616 and for My servant ^H5650 David’s ^H1732 sake ^H4616.’”

35 Now it happened ^H1961 that night ^H3915, that the angel ^H4397 of Yahweh ^H3068 went ^H3318 out ^H3318 and struck ^H5221 185,000 ^{H3967 H8084 H2568 H505} in the camp ^H4264 of the Assyrians ^H804. And the [fn]men arose ^H7925 early ^H7925 in the morning ^H1242, and behold ^H2009, all ^H3605 of [fn]them were dead ^H4191 bodies ^H6297. 36 So Sennacherib ^H5576 king ^H4428 of Assyria ^H804 set ^H5265 out ^H5265 and went ^H2717 away and returned ^H7725 home and lived ^H3427 at Nineveh ^H5210. 37 Now it happened ^H1961 that as he was worshiping ^H2331 in ^H2331 the house ^H1004 of Nisroch ^H5268 his god ^H430, [fn]Adrammelech ^H152 and Sharezer ^H8272 struck ^H5221 him down ^H5221 with the sword ^H2719; and they escaped ^H4422 into the land ^H776 of Ararat ^H780. And Esarhaddon ^H634 his son ^H1121 became ^H4427 king ^H4427 in ^H8478 his place ^H8478.
