Nebuchadnezzar Besieges Jerusalem

1 Now in the ninth ^H8671 year ^H8141 of his reign ^H4427, on the tenth ^H6218 day of the tenth ^H6224 month ^H2320, Nebuchadnezzar ^H5019 king ^H4428 of Babylon ^H894 came ^H935, he and all ^H3605 his military ^H2428 force ^H2428, against ^H5921 Jerusalem ^H3389, and he camped ^H2583 against ^H5921 it and built ^H1129 a siege ^H1785 wall ^H1785 all ^H5439 around ^H5439 [fn]it.

Jerusalem Burned

So Judah ^H3063 went ^H1540 into ^H1540 exile ^H1540 from its land ^H127.

Gedaliah Appointed Judah’s Governor

22 Now as for the people ^H5971 who were left ^H7604 in the land ^H776 of Judah ^H3063, whom ^H834 Nebuchadnezzar ^H5019 king ^H4428 of Babylon ^H894 had left ^H7604, he appointed ^H6485 Gedaliah ^H1436 the son ^H1121 of Ahikam ^H296, the son ^H1121 of Shaphan ^H8227 over ^H5921 them.

23 Then all ^H3605 the commanders ^H8269 of the military ^H2428 forces ^H2428, they and their men ^H376, heard ^H8085 that the king ^H4428 of Babylon ^H894 had appointed ^H6485 Gedaliah ^H1436 governor. So they came ^H935 to Gedaliah ^H1436 to Mizpah ^H4709, namely, Ishmael ^H3458 the son ^H1121 of Nethaniah ^H5418, and Johanan ^H3076 the son ^H1121 of Kareah ^H7143, and Seraiah ^H8304 the son ^H1121 of Tanhumeth ^H8576 the Netophathite ^H5200, and Jaazaniah ^H2970 the son ^H1121 of the Maacathite ^H4602, they and their men ^H376. 24 Then Gedaliah ^H1436 swore ^H7650 to them and their men ^H376 and said ^H559 to them, “Do not be ^H3372 afraid ^H3372 of the servants ^H5650 of the Chaldeans ^H3778; live ^H3427 in the land ^H776 and serve ^H5647 the king ^H4428 of Babylon ^H894, and it will be ^H3190 well ^H3190 with you.”

25 But it happened ^H1961 in the seventh ^H7637 month ^H2320, that Ishmael ^H3458 the son ^H1121 of Nethaniah ^H5418, the son ^H1121 of Elishama ^H476, of the royal ^H4410 seed ^H2233, came ^H935 [fn]with ten ^H6235 men ^H376 and struck ^H5221 Gedaliah ^H1436 down so that he died ^H4191, along with the Jews ^H3064 and the Chaldeans ^H3778 who ^H834 were with him at Mizpah ^H4709. 26 Then all ^H3605 the people ^H5971, both ^H4480 small ^H6996 and great ^H1419, and the commanders ^H8269 of the military ^H2428 forces ^H2428 arose ^H6965 and went ^H935 to Egypt ^H4714; for they were ^H3372 afraid ^H3372 of the Chaldeans ^H3778.

27 Now it happened ^H1961 in the thirty-seventh ^H7970 H7651 year ^H8141 of the exile ^H1546 of Jehoiachin ^H3078 king ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063, in the twelfth ^H8147 H6240 month ^H2320, on the twenty-seventh ^H6242 H7651 day of the month ^H2320, that Evil-merodach ^H192 king ^H4428 of Babylon ^H894, in the year ^H8141 that he became ^H4427 king ^H4427, lifted ^H5375 up ^H5375 the head ^H7218 of Jehoiachin ^H3078 king ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063 from prison ^H1004 H3608; 28 and he spoke ^H1696 to him good ^H2896 words, and he set ^H5414 his throne ^H3678 above ^H4480 H5921 the throne ^H3678 of the kings ^H4428 who ^H834 were with him in Babylon ^H894. 29 So [fn]Jehoiachin changed ^H8132 his prison ^H3608 clothes ^H899 and [fn]had ^H398 his meals ^H3899 in [fn]the king’s presence ^H6440 continually ^H8548 all ^H3605 the days ^H3117 of his life ^H2416; 30 and for his allowance ^H737, a continual ^H8548 allowance ^H737 was given ^H5414 him by the king ^H4428, a portion ^H1697 for each ^H3117 day ^H3117, all ^H3605 the days ^H3117 of his life ^H2416.
