Jehu Anointed King over Israel

1 Now Elisha ^H477 the prophet ^H5030 called ^H7121 one ^H259 of the sons ^H1121 of the prophets ^H5030 and said ^H559 to him, “Gird ^H2296 up your loins ^H4975, and take ^H3947 this ^H2088 flask ^H6378 of oil ^H8081 in your hand ^H3027 and go ^H1980 to Ramoth-gilead ^H7433.

2 And you will come ^H935 there ^H8033 and look ^H7200 there for Jehu ^H3058 the son ^H1121 of Jehoshaphat ^H3092 the son ^H1121 of Nimshi ^H5250. And you will come ^H935 in ^H935 and [fn]bid him arise ^H6965 from among ^H8432 his brothers ^H251. And you will cause him to come ^H935 in ^H935 to an inner ^H2315 room ^H2315. 3 Then you will take ^H3947 the flask ^H6378 of oil ^H8081 and pour ^H3332 it on his head ^H7218 and say ^H559, ‘Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068, “I have anointed ^H4886 you king ^H4428 over ^H5921 Israel ^H3478.”’ Then open ^H6605 the door ^H1817 and flee ^H5127 and do not wait ^H2442.”

4 So the young ^H5288 man ^H5288—the young ^H5288 man ^H5288 of the prophet ^H5030—went ^H1980 to Ramoth-gilead ^H7433. 5 Then he came ^H935, and behold ^H2009, the commanders ^H8269 of the military ^H2428 were sitting ^H3427, and he said ^H559, “I have a word ^H1697 for you, O commander ^H8269.” And Jehu ^H3058 said ^H559, “[fn]For which ^H4310 one of us?” And he said ^H559, “For you, O commander ^H8269.” 6 And he arose ^H6965 and came ^H935 into the house ^H1004, and he poured ^H3332 the oil ^H8081 on his head ^H7218 and said ^H559 to him, “Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068, the God ^H430 of Israel ^H3478, ‘I have anointed ^H4886 you king ^H4428 over ^H413 the people ^H5971 of Yahweh ^H3068, even over ^H413 Israel ^H3478. 7 And you shall strike ^H5221 the house ^H1004 of Ahab ^H256 your master ^H113, that I may avenge ^H5358 the blood ^H1818 of My slaves ^H5650 the prophets ^H5030, and the blood ^H1818 of all ^H3605 the slaves ^H5650 of Yahweh ^H3068, at the hand ^H3027 of Jezebel ^H348. 8 For the whole ^H3605 house ^H1004 of Ahab ^H256 shall perish ^H6, and I will cut ^H3772 off ^H3772 from Ahab ^H256 every ^H8366 [fn]male ^H8366 H7023 person both bond ^H6113 and free ^H5800 in Israel ^H3478. 9 And I will make ^H5414 the house ^H1004 of Ahab ^H256 like the house ^H1004 of Jeroboam ^H3379 the son ^H1121 of Nebat ^H5028, and like the house ^H1004 of Baasha ^H1201 the son ^H1121 of Ahijah ^H281. 10 And the dogs ^H3611 shall eat ^H398 Jezebel ^H348 in the [fn]property ^H2506 of Jezreel ^H3157, and none ^H369 shall bury ^H6912 her.’” Then he opened ^H6605 the door ^H1817 and fled ^H5127.

11 Now Jehu ^H3058 came ^H3318 out ^H3318 to the servants ^H5650 of his master ^H113, and one said ^H559 to him, “Is all well ^H7965? Why ^H4069 did this ^H2088 mad ^H7696 fellow ^H7696 come ^H935 to you?” And he said ^H559 to them, “You know ^H3045 the man ^H376 and his talk ^H7879.” 12 And they said ^H559, “It is a lie ^H8267, declare ^H5046 it to us now ^H4994.” And he said ^H559, “Thus ^H2088 and thus ^H2088 he said ^H559 to me, ‘Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 Yahweh ^H3068, “I have anointed ^H4886 you king ^H4428 over ^H413 Israel ^H3478.”’” 13 Then they hurried ^H4116 and each ^H376 man ^H376 took ^H3947 his garment ^H899 and placed ^H7760 it under ^H8478 him on the bare ^H1634 steps ^H4609, and blew ^H8628 the trumpet ^H7782, saying ^H559, “Jehu ^H3058 is ^H4427 king ^H4427!”

Jehu Deceives Joram

14 So Jehu ^H3058 the son ^H1121 of Jehoshaphat ^H3092 the son ^H1121 of Nimshi ^H5250 conspired ^H7194 against ^H413 Joram ^H3141. Now Joram ^H3141 [fn]with all ^H3605 Israel ^H3478 was [fn]guarding ^H8104 Ramoth-gilead ^H7433 against ^H4480 H6440 Hazael ^H2371 king ^H4428 of Aram ^H758,

15 but King ^H4428 [fn]Joram ^H3088 had returned ^H7725 to be healed ^H7495 in Jezreel ^H3157 of the wounds ^H4347 which ^H834 the Arameans ^H761 had struck ^H5221 him with when he fought ^H3898 with Hazael ^H2371 king ^H4428 of Aram ^H758. So Jehu ^H3058 said ^H559, “If ^H518 this is your mind ^H5315, then let no ^H408 one ^H6412 escape ^H6412 or [fn]leave ^H3318 H4480 the city ^H5892 to go ^H1980 declare ^H5046 it in Jezreel ^H3157.” 16 Then Jehu ^H3058 rode ^H7392 in ^H7392 a ^H7392 chariot ^H7392 and went ^H1980 to Jezreel ^H3157, for Joram ^H3141 was lying ^H7901 there ^H8033. Ahaziah ^H274 king ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063 had come ^H3381 down ^H3381 to see ^H7200 Joram ^H3141.

17 Now the watchman ^H6822 was standing ^H5975 on the tower ^H4026 in Jezreel ^H3157 and he saw ^H7200 the [fn]company ^H8229 of Jehu ^H3058 as he came ^H935, and said ^H559, “I see ^H7200 a [fn]company ^H8229.” And Joram ^H3088 said ^H559, “Take ^H3947 a horseman ^H7395 and send ^H7971 him to meet ^H7122 them and let him say ^H559, ‘Is it peace ^H7965?’” 18 So a horseman ^H7392 H5483 went ^H1980 to meet ^H7122 him and said ^H559, “Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 the king ^H4428, ‘Is it peace ^H7965?’” And Jehu ^H3058 said ^H559, “What ^H4100 have you to do with peace ^H7965? Turn ^H5437 behind ^H413 H310 me.” And the watchman ^H6822 declared ^H5046 saying ^H559, “The messenger ^H4397 came ^H935 to them, but he did not return ^H7725.” 19 Then he sent ^H7971 out ^H7971 a second ^H8145 horseman ^H7392 H5483. And he came ^H935 to them and said ^H559, “Thus ^H3541 says ^H559 the king ^H4428, ‘Is it peace ^H7965?’” And Jehu ^H3058 [fn]answered ^H559, “What ^H4100 have you to do with peace ^H7965? Turn ^H5437 behind ^H413 H310 me.” 20 And the watchman ^H6822 declared ^H5046 saying ^H559, “He came ^H935 up ^H5704 to them, but he did not return ^H7725; and the driving ^H4491 is like the driving ^H4491 of Jehu ^H3058 the son ^H1121 of Nimshi ^H5250, for he drives ^H5090 in madness ^H7697.”

21 Then [fn]Joram ^H3088 said ^H559, “[fn]Get ^H631 ready ^H631.” And they made ^H631 his chariot ^H7393 ready ^H631. [fn]Joram ^H3088 king ^H4428 of Israel ^H3478 and Ahaziah ^H274 king ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063 went ^H3318 out ^H3318, each ^H376 in his chariot ^H7393, and they went ^H3318 out ^H3318 to meet ^H7122 Jehu ^H3058 and found ^H4672 him in the [fn]property ^H2513 of Naboth ^H5022 the Jezreelite ^H3158. 22 Now it happened that when [fn]Joram ^H3088 saw ^H7200 Jehu ^H3058, he said ^H559, “Is it peace ^H7965, Jehu ^H3058?” And he [fn]answered ^H559, “What ^H4100 peace ^H7965, so ^H5704 long ^H5704 as the harlotries ^H2183 of your mother ^H517 Jezebel ^H348 and her sorceries ^H3785 are so many ^H7227?” 23 So [fn]Joram ^H3088 [fn]turned ^H2015 H3027 about ^H2015 H3027 and fled ^H5127 and said ^H559 to Ahaziah ^H274, “There is deception ^H4820, O Ahaziah ^H274!” 24 And Jehu ^H3058 [fn]drew ^H4390 his bow ^H7198 with his full ^H4390 strength ^H3027 and struck ^H5221 [fn]Joram ^H3088 between ^H996 his arms ^H2220; and the arrow ^H2678 went ^H3318 [fn]through ^H3318 his heart ^H3820 and he crouched ^H3766 down in his chariot ^H7393. 25 Then Jehu said ^H559 to Bidkar ^H920 his officer ^H7991, “Lift ^H5375 him up ^H5375 and cast ^H7993 him into the [fn]property ^H2513 of the field ^H7704 of Naboth ^H5022 the Jezreelite ^H3158, for I remember ^H2142 when [fn]you and I were riding ^H7392 together ^H6776 after ^H310 Ahab ^H256 his father ^H1, that Yahweh ^H3068 lifted ^H5375 up ^H5375 this ^H2088 oracle ^H4853 against ^H5921 him: 26 ‘Surely ^H518 H3808 I have seen ^H7200 yesterday ^H570 the blood ^H1818 of Naboth ^H5022 and the blood ^H1818 of his sons ^H1121,’ says ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068, ‘and I will repay ^H7999 you in this ^H2088 [fn]property ^H2513,’ says ^H5002 Yahweh ^H3068. Jehu Strikes Down Ahaziah

27 And Ahaziah ^H274 the king ^H4428 of Judah ^H3063 saw ^H7200 this and fled ^H5127 by the way ^H1870 of the garden ^H1588 house ^H1004. And Jehu ^H3058 pursued ^H7291 him and said ^H559, “Strike ^H5221 him down too ^H1571, in the chariot ^H4818.” So they struck him down at the ascent ^H4608 of Gur ^H1483, which ^H834 is at Ibleam ^H2991. But he fled ^H5127 to Megiddo ^H4023 and died ^H4191 there ^H8033.

28 Then his servants ^H5650 carried ^H7392 him in ^H7392 a ^H7392 chariot ^H7392 to Jerusalem ^H3389 and buried ^H6912 him in his grave ^H6900 with his fathers ^H1 in the city ^H5892 of David ^H1732.

29 Now in the eleventh ^H259 H6240 year ^H8141 of Joram ^H3141, the son ^H1121 of Ahab ^H256, Ahaziah ^H274 became ^H4427 king ^H4427 over ^H5921 Judah ^H3063.

Jezebel Is Eaten by Dogs

30 Then Jehu ^H3058 came ^H935 to Jezreel ^H3157, and Jezebel ^H348 heard ^H8085 of it and she painted ^H7760 H6320 her eyes ^H5869 and adorned ^H3190 her head ^H7218 and looked ^H8259 out ^H8259 the window ^H2474.

31 As Jehu ^H3058 entered ^H935 the gate ^H8179, she said ^H559, “Is it [fn]peace ^H7965, Zimri ^H2174, [fn]your master’s ^H113 killer ^H2026?” 32 Then he lifted ^H5375 up ^H5375 his face ^H6440 to the window ^H2474 and said ^H559, “Who ^H4310 is on my side ^H854? Who ^H4310?” And two ^H8147 or three ^H7969 officials ^H5631 looked ^H8259 down ^H8259 at him. 33 And he said ^H559, “Throw ^H8058 her down ^H8058.” So they threw ^H8058 her down ^H8058, and some ^H4480 of her blood ^H1818 was sprinkled ^H5137 on the wall ^H7023 and on the horses ^H5483, and he trampled ^H7429 her under foot. 34 Then he came ^H935 in ^H935 and ate ^H398 and drank ^H8354. And he said ^H559, “This ^H1931 is the word ^H1697 of Yahweh ^H3068, which ^H834 He spoke ^H1696 by His servant ^H5650 Elijah ^H452 the Tishbite ^H8664, saying ^H559, ‘In the [fn]property ^H2506 of Jezreel ^H3157 the dogs ^H3611 shall eat ^H398 the flesh ^H1320 of Jezebel ^H348; 37 and the corpse ^H5038 of Jezebel ^H348 will be as dung ^H1828 on the face ^H6440 of the field ^H7704 in the [fn]property ^H2506 of Jezreel ^H3157, so ^H834 they cannot ^H3808 say ^H559, “This ^H2088 is Jezebel ^H348.”’”
