Barnabas and Saul Sent from Antioch by the Holy Spirit

1 Now ^G1161 there were at Antioch ^G490, in the church ^G1577 that was there, prophets ^G4396 and teachers ^G1320: Barnabas ^G921, and Simeon ^G4826 who was called ^G2564 Niger ^G3526, and Lucius ^G3066 of ^G2956 Cyrene ^G2956, and Manaen ^G3127 who had been brought ^G4939 up ^G4939 with Herod ^G2264 the tetrarch ^G5076, and Saul ^G4569.

2 And while they were ministering ^G3008 to the Lord ^G2962 and fasting ^G3522, the Holy ^G40 Spirit ^G4151 said ^G3004, “Set ^G873 apart ^G873 for Me Barnabas ^G921 and Saul ^G4569 for the work ^G2041 to which ^G3739 I have called ^G4341 them.” 3 Then ^G5119, when they had fasted ^G3522 and prayed ^G4336 and laid ^G2007 their hands ^G5495 on ^G2007 them, they sent ^G630 them away ^G630.

On Cyprus

4 So ^G3767, being sent ^G1599 out ^G1599 by the Holy ^G40 Spirit ^G4151, they went ^G2718 down ^G2718 to Seleucia ^G4581 and from ^G1564 there ^G1564 they sailed ^G636 to Cyprus ^G2954.

5 And when they reached ^G1096 Salamis ^G4529, they began to proclaim ^G2605 the word ^G3056 of God ^G2316 in the synagogues ^G4864 of the Jews ^G2453, and they also ^G2532 had ^G2192 John ^G2491 as their helper ^G5257. 6 And when they had gone ^G1330 through ^G1330 the whole ^G3650 island ^G3520 as far ^G891 as Paphos ^G3974, they found ^G2147 a magician ^G3097, a Jewish ^G2453 false ^G5578 prophet ^G5578 whose ^G3739 name ^G3686 was Bar-Jesus ^G919, 7 who ^G3739 was with the proconsul ^G446, Sergius ^G4588 Paulus ^G3972, a man ^G435 of intelligence ^G4908. This ^G3778 man ^G3778 summoned ^G4341 Barnabas ^G921 and Saul ^G4569 and sought ^G1934 to hear ^G191 the word ^G3056 of God ^G2316. 8 But Elymas ^G1681 the magician ^G3097 (for so ^G3779 his name ^G3686 is translated ^G3177) was opposing ^G436 them, seeking ^G2212 to turn ^G1294 the proconsul ^G446 away ^G1294 from the faith ^G4102. 9 But Saul ^G4569, who ^G3588 was also ^G2532 known as Paul ^G3972, [fn]filled ^G4130 with the Holy ^G40 Spirit ^G4151, fixed ^G816 his gaze ^G816 on him, 10 and said ^G3004, “You who are full ^G4134 of all ^G3956 deceit ^G1388 and fraud ^G4468, you son ^G5207 of the devil ^G1228, you enemy ^G2190 of all ^G3956 righteousness ^G1343, will you not cease ^G3973 to make ^G1294 crooked ^G1294 the straight ^G2117 ways ^G3598 of the [fn]Lord ^G2962? 11 Now ^G3568, behold ^G2400, the hand ^G5495 of the [fn]Lord ^G2962 is upon you, and you will be blind ^G5185 and not see ^G991 the sun ^G2246 for a time ^G2540.” And immediately ^G3916 a mist ^G887 and a darkness ^G4655 fell ^G4098 upon him, and he went ^G4013 about ^G4013 seeking ^G2212 those who ^G5497 would lead ^G5497 him by ^G5497 the ^G5497 hand ^G5497. 12 Then ^G5119 the proconsul ^G446 believed ^G4100 when he saw ^G3708 what had happened ^G1096, being astonished ^G1605 at the teaching ^G1322 of the Lord ^G2962.

In Pisidian Antioch

13 Now ^G1161 after Paul ^G3972 and his companions ^G3588 G4012 set ^G321 sail ^G321 from Paphos ^G3974, they came ^G2064 to Perga ^G4011 in Pamphylia ^G3828, but John ^G2491 left ^G672 them and returned ^G5290 to Jerusalem ^G2414.

14 But going ^G1330 on ^G1330 from Perga ^G4011, they arrived ^G3854 at Pisidian ^G4099 Antioch ^G490. And on the Sabbath ^G4521 day ^G2250, they went ^G2064 into the synagogue ^G4864 and sat ^G2523 down ^G2523. 15 And after ^G3326 the reading ^G320 of the Law ^G3551 and the Prophets ^G4396 the synagogue ^G752 officials ^G752 sent ^G649 to them, saying ^G3004, “Brothers ^G435 G80, if ^G1487 you have any ^G5100 word ^G3056 of exhortation ^G3874 for the people ^G2992, say ^G3004 it.” 16 So Paul ^G3972 stood ^G450 up ^G450, and motioning ^G2678 with his hand ^G5495 said ^G3004,

I am ^G1510 not He. But behold ^G2400, one is coming ^G2064 after ^G3326 me of whom ^G3739 I am ^G1510 not worthy ^G514 to untie ^G3089 the sandals ^G5266 of His feet ^G4228.’

26 “Brothers ^G435 G80, sons ^G5207 of Abraham’s ^G11 family ^G1085, and those ^G3588 among ^G1722 you who fear ^G5399 God ^G2316, to us the word ^G3056 of this ^G3778 salvation ^G4991 was sent ^G1821. 27 For those ^G3588 who live ^G2730 in Jerusalem ^G2419, and their rulers ^G758, recognizing ^G50 neither Him nor ^G2532 the [fn]utterances ^G5456 of the prophets ^G4396 which are read ^G314 every ^G3956 Sabbath ^G4521, fulfilled ^G4137 them by condemning ^G2919 Him. 28 And though they found ^G2147 no ^G3367 ground ^G156 for death, they asked ^G154 Pilate ^G4091 that He be [fn]executed ^G337. 29 And when ^G5613 they had finished ^G5055 all ^G3956 that was written ^G1125 concerning ^G4012 Him, they took ^G2507 Him down ^G2507 from the tree ^G3586 and laid ^G5087 Him in a tomb ^G3419. 30 But God ^G2316 raised ^G1453 Him from the dead ^G3498; 31 and for many ^G4183 days ^G2250 He appeared ^G3708 to those ^G3588 who came ^G4872 up with Him from Galilee ^G1056 to Jerusalem ^G2419, the very ones ^G3748 who ^G3748 are now ^G3568 His witnesses ^G3144 to the people ^G2992. 32 And we proclaim ^G2097 to you the good ^G2097 news ^G2097 of the promise ^G1860 made ^G1096 to the fathers ^G3962, 33 that God ^G2316 has fulfilled ^G1603 this ^G3778 promise [fn]to our children ^G5043 in that He raised ^G450 up ^G450 Jesus ^G2424, as it is also ^G2532 written ^G1125 in the second ^G1208 Psalm ^G5568, ‘YOU ARE MY SON ^G5207; TODAY ^G4594 I HAVE BEGOTTEN ^G1080 YOU.’ 34 But that He raised ^G450 Him up ^G450 from the dead ^G3498, no ^G3371 longer ^G3371 to return ^G5290 to corruption ^G1312, He has spoken ^G3004 in ^G3779 this ^G3779 way ^G3779: ‘I WILL GIVE ^G1325 YOU THE HOLY ^G3741 and [fn]FAITHFUL ^G4103 lovingkindnesses OF DAVID ^G1138.’ 35 Therefore ^G1360 He also ^G2532 says ^G3004 in another ^G2087 Psalm, ‘YOU WILL NOT GIVE ^G1325 YOUR [fn]HOLY ^G3741 ONE ^G3741 OVER ^G1325 TO SEE ^G3708 CORRUPTION ^G1312.’ 36 For David ^G1138, after he had [fn]served ^G5256 the purpose ^G1012 of God ^G2316 in his own ^G2398 generation ^G1074, fell ^G2837 asleep ^G2837 and was laid ^G4369 among ^G4314 his fathers ^G3962 and saw ^G3708 corruption ^G1312; 37 but He whom ^G3739 God ^G2316 raised ^G1453 did not see ^G3708 corruption ^G1312. 38 Therefore ^G3767 let it be known ^G1110 to you, brothers ^G435 G80, that through ^G1223 [fn]Him forgiveness ^G859 of sins ^G266 is proclaimed ^G2605 to you, 39 and that in ^G1722 Him, everyone ^G3956 who believes ^G4100 is justified ^G1344 from all ^G3956 things ^G3956 which ^G3739 you could ^G1410 not be justified ^G1344 from [fn]through ^G1722 the Law ^G3551 of Moses ^G3475. 40 Therefore ^G3767 watch ^G991 out ^G991, so ^G3361 that the thing ^G3004 spoken ^G3004 of in the Prophets ^G4396 may not come ^G1904 upon you:

41 ‘LOOK ^G3708, YOU SCOFFERS ^G2707, AND MARVEL ^G2296, AND [fn]PERISH ^G853;

FOR I AM ACCOMPLISHING ^G2038 A WORK ^G2041 IN YOUR DAYS ^G2250,

A WORK ^G2041 WHICH ^G3739 YOU WILL NEVER ^G3756 G3361 BELIEVE ^G4100, THOUGH ^G1437 SOMEONE ^G5100 SHOULD RECOUNT ^G1555 IT TO YOU.’”

42 And as [fn]Paul and Barnabas were leaving ^G1826, the people kept pleading ^G3870 that these ^G3778 words ^G4487 might be spoken ^G2980 to them the next ^G3342 Sabbath ^G4521. 43 Now ^G1161 when the meeting of the synagogue ^G4864 had broken ^G3089 up ^G3089, many ^G4183 of the Jews ^G2453 and of the God-fearing ^G4576 [fn]proselytes ^G4339 followed ^G190 Paul ^G3972 and Barnabas ^G921, who ^G3748, speaking ^G4354 to them, were urging ^G3982 them to continue ^G4357 in the grace ^G5485 of God ^G2316.

Many Gentiles Believe

44 And the next ^G2064 Sabbath ^G4521, nearly ^G4975 the whole ^G3956 city ^G4172 assembled ^G4863 to hear ^G191 the word ^G3056 of [fn]the [fn]Lord ^G2316.

45 But when the Jews ^G2453 saw ^G3708 the crowds ^G3793, they were filled ^G4130 with jealousy ^G2205 and began contradicting ^G483 the things ^G2980 spoken ^G2980 by Paul ^G3972, [fn]blaspheming ^G987. 46 Paul ^G3972 and Barnabas ^G921 spoke ^G3955 out ^G3955 boldly ^G3955 and said ^G3004, “It was necessary ^G316 that the word ^G3056 of God ^G2316 be spoken ^G2980 to you first ^G4413. Since ^G1894 you reject ^G683 it and judge ^G2919 yourselves ^G1438 unworthy ^G3756 G514 of eternal ^G166 life ^G2222, behold ^G2400, we are turning ^G4762 to the Gentiles ^G1484. 47 For so ^G3779 the [fn]Lord ^G2962 has commanded ^G1781 us,

‘I HAVE PLACED ^G5087 YOU AS A LIGHT ^G5457 FOR THE GENTILES ^G1484,

THAT YOU MAY [fn]BRING ^G1510 G1519 SALVATION ^G4991 TO THE END ^G2078 OF THE EARTH ^G1093.’”

48 And when the Gentiles ^G1484 heard ^G191 this, they began rejoicing ^G5463 and glorifying ^G1392 the word ^G3056 of [fn]the [fn]Lord ^G2962, and as many ^G3745 as had been ^G1510 appointed ^G5021 to eternal ^G166 life ^G2222 believed ^G4100. 49 And the word ^G3056 of the [fn]Lord ^G2962 was being spread ^G1308 through ^G1223 the whole ^G3650 region ^G5561. 50 But the Jews ^G2453 incited ^G3951 the [fn]God-fearing ^G4576 women ^G1135 of prominence ^G2158 and the leading ^G4413 men ^G4413 of the city ^G4172, and instigated ^G1892 a persecution ^G1375 against ^G1909 Paul ^G3972 and Barnabas ^G921, and drove ^G1544 them out ^G1544 of their [fn]district ^G3725. 51 But having shaken ^G1621 off ^G1621 the dust ^G2868 of their feet ^G4228 against ^G1909 them, they went ^G2064 to Iconium ^G2430. 52 And the disciples ^G3101 were continually filled ^G4137 with joy ^G5479 and with the Holy ^G40 Spirit ^G4151.
