Timothy Joins Paul and Silas
1 Now Paul also G2532 arrived G2658 at Derbe G1191 and at Lystra G3082. And behold G2400, a disciple G3101 was there G1563, named G3686 Timothy G5095, the son G5207 of a Jewish G2453 woman G1135 who was a believer G4103, but his father G3962 was a Greek G1672,
2 and he was well G3140 spoken G3140 of by the brothers G80 who were in Lystra G3082 and Iconium G2430. 3 Paul G3972 wanted G2309 this G3778 man G3778 to [fn]go G1831 with him, and he took G2983 him and circumcised G4059 him because G1223 of the Jews G2453 who were in those G1565 parts G5117, for they all G537 knew G6063 that his father G3962 was a Greek G1672. 4 Now G1161 while G5613 they were passing G1279 through G1279 the cities G4172, they were delivering G3860 the decrees G1378 which had been decided G2919 upon by the apostles G652 and elders G4245 who G3588 were in Jerusalem G2414, for them to keep G5442. 5 So G3767 the churches G1577 were being strengthened G4732 [fn]in the faith G4102, and were abounding G4052 in number G706 daily G2596 G2250.
The Macedonian Vision
6 And they passed G1330 through G1330 the [fn]Phrygian G5435 and Galatian G1054 region G5561, having been forbidden G2967 by the Holy G40 Spirit G4151 to speak G2980 the word G3056 in [fn]Asia G773;
7 and after they came G2064 to Mysia G3465, they were trying G3985 to go G4198 into Bithynia G978, and the Spirit G4151 of Jesus G2424 did not permit G1439 them; 8 and passing G3928 by Mysia G3465, they came G2597 down G2597 to Troas G5174. 9 And a vision G3705 appeared G3708 to Paul G3972 in the night G3571: a man G435 of Macedonia G3110 was standing G2476 and appealing G3870 to him, and saying G3004, “Come G1224 over G1224 to Macedonia G3109 and help G997 us.” 10 And when G5613 he had seen G3708 the vision G3705, immediately G2112 we sought G2212 to [fn]go G1831 into Macedonia G3109, concluding G4822 that God G2316 had called G4341 us to proclaim G2097 the gospel G2097 to them.
Lydia’s Conversion in Philippi
11 So G3767 setting G321 sail G321 from Troas G5174, we ran G2113 a G2113 straight G2113 course G2113 to Samothrace G4543, and on the day following G1897 to Neapolis G3496;
12 and from G2547 there G2547 to Philippi G5375, which G3748 is a leading G4413 city G4172 of the district G3310 of Macedonia G3109, a Roman colony G2862; and we were staying G1304 in this G3778 city G4172 for some G5100 days G2250. 13 And on the Sabbath G4521 day G2250 we went G1831 outside G1854 the gate G4439 to a riverside G3844 G4215, where G3757 we were supposing G3543 that there would be a place G4335 of G4335 prayer G4335; and sitting G2523 down G2523, we began speaking G2980 to the women G1135 who had assembled G4905. 14 And a woman G1135 named G3686 Lydia G3070, from the city G4172 of Thyatira G2363, a seller G4211 of G4211 purple G4211 fabrics G4211, a worshiper G4576 of God G2316, was listening G191, whose heart G2588 the Lord G2962 opened G1272 to pay G4437 attention G4337 to the things G2980 spoken G2980 by Paul G3972. 15 And when G5613 she and her household G3624 had been baptized G907, she urged G3870 us, saying G3004, “If G1487 you have judged G2919 me to be faithful G4103 to the Lord G2962, come G1525 into my house G3624 and stay G3306.” And she prevailed G3849 upon us.
Paul and Silas in Prison
16 Now it happened G1096 that as we were going G4198 to the place G4335 of prayer G4335, a servant-girl G3814 having G2192 a spirit G4151 of divination G4436 met G5221 us, who G3748 was bringing G3930 her masters G2962 much G4183 profit G2039 by fortune-telling G3132.
17 Following G2628 after G2628 Paul G3972 and us, she kept crying G2896 out G2896, saying G3004, “These G3778 men G444 are slaves G1401 of the Most G5310 High G5310 God G2316, who G3748 are proclaiming G2605 to you [fn]the way G3598 of salvation G4991.” 18 And she continued doing G4160 this G3778 for many G4183 days G2250. But being greatly G1278 annoyed G1278, Paul G3972 turned G1994 and said G3004 to the spirit G4151, “I command G3853 you in the name G3686 of Jesus G2424 Christ G5547 to leave G1831 her!” And it left G1831 at that very G846 [fn]moment G5610.
19 But when her masters G2962 saw G3708 that their hope G1680 of profit G2039 had left G1831, they seized G1949 Paul G3972 and Silas G4609 and dragged G1670 them into the marketplace G58 before G1909 the authorities G758, 20 and when they had brought G4317 them to the chief G4755 magistrates G4755, they said G3004, “These G3778 men G444 are throwing G1613 our city G4172 into confusion G1613, being G5225 Jews G2453, 21 and are proclaiming G2605 customs G1485 that G3739 are not lawful G1832 for us to accept G3858 or G3761 to observe G4160, being G1510 Romans G4514.” 22 And the crowd G3793 joined G4911 together G4911 to G4911 attack G4911 them, and the chief G4755 magistrates G4755, tearing G4048 their garments G2440 off G4048 of them, proceeded to order G2753 them to be beaten G4463 with G4463 rods G4463. 23 And when they had inflicted G2007 them with many G4183 wounds G4127, they threw G906 them into prison G5438, commanding G3853 the jailer G1200 to guard G5083 them securely G806, 24 who, having received G2983 such G5108 a command G3852, threw G906 them into the inner G2082 prison G5438 and fastened G805 their feet G4228 in the [fn]stocks G3586.
The Philippian Jailer Converted
25 But about G2596 midnight G3317 Paul G3972 and Silas G4609 were praying G4336 and singing G5214 hymns G5214 of G5214 praise G5214 to God G2316, and the prisoners G1198 were listening G1874 to G1874 them.
26 And suddenly G869 there came G1096 a great G3173 earthquake G4578, so G5620 that the foundations G2310 of the jailhouse G1201 were shaken G4531; and immediately G3916 all G3956 the doors G2374 were opened G455 and everyone’s G3956 chains G1199 were unfastened G447. 27 And when the jailer G1200 awoke G1853 and saw G3708 the prison G5438 doors G2374 opened G455, he drew G4685 his sword G3162 and was G3195 about G3195 to G3195 kill G337 himself G1438, supposing G3543 that the prisoners G1198 had escaped G1628. 28 But Paul G3972 cried G5455 out with a loud G3173 voice G5456, saying G3004, “Do G4238 not harm G2556 yourself G4572, for we are all G537 here G1759!” 29 And he called G154 for lights G5457 and rushed G1530 in G1530, and trembling G1790 with G1790 fear G1790 he fell G4363 down G4363 before G4363 Paul G3972 and Silas G4609, 30 and after he brought G4254 them out, he said G5346, “Sirs G2962, what G5101 must G1163 I do G4160 to be saved G4982?” 31 And they said G3004, “Believe G4100 in the Lord G2962 Jesus G2424, and you will be saved G4982, you and your house G3624.” 32 And they spoke G2980 the word G3056 of [fn]the Lord G2962 to him together G4862 with all G3956 who G3588 were in his household G3614. 33 And he took G3880 them that very hour G5610 of the night G3571 and washed G3068 their wounds G4127, and immediately G3916 he was baptized G907, he and all G537 his household. 34 And he brought G321 them into his house G3624 and set G3908 [fn]food G5132 before G3908 them, and rejoiced G21 [fn]greatly G21 with G3832 his whole G3832 household G3832, because he had G4100 believed G4100 in God G2316.
35 Now G1161 when day G2250 came G1096, the chief G4755 magistrates G4755 sent G649 their policemen G4465, saying G3004, “Release G630 those G1565 men G444.” 36 And the jailer G1200 reported G518 these G3778 words G3056 to Paul G3972, saying, “The chief G4755 magistrates G4755 have sent G649 to release G630 you. Therefore G3767 come G1831 out G1831 now G3568 and go G4198 in peace G1515.” 37 But Paul G3972 said G5346 to them, “Having beaten G1194 us in public G1219 without G178 trial G178, men G444 who are Romans G4514, they have thrown G906 us into prison G5438. And now G3568 are they sending G1544 us away G1544 secretly G2977? No G3756 indeed G1063! But let them come G2064 themselves G846 and bring G1806 us out G1806.” 38 And the policemen G4465 reported G518 these G3778 words G4487 to the chief G4755 magistrates G4755. They were afraid G5399 when they heard G191 that they were Romans G4514, 39 and they came G2064 and appealed G3870 to them, and when they had brought G1806 them out G1806, they kept requesting G2065 them to leave G565 the city G4172. 40 And they went G1831 out G1831 of the prison G5438 and entered G1525 the house of Lydia G3070, and when they saw G3708 the brothers G80, they [fn]encouraged G3870 them and left G1831.
