Paul and Silas in Thessalonica
1 Now G1161 when they had traveled G1353 through G1353 Amphipolis G295 and Apollonia G624, they came G2064 to Thessalonica G2332, where G3699 there was a synagogue G4864 of the Jews G2453.
2 And according G2596 to Paul’s G3972 custom G1486, he went G1525 to them, and for three G5140 Sabbaths G4521 reasoned G1256 with them from the Scriptures G1124, 3 [fn]explaining G1272 and setting G3908 before G3908 them that the [fn]Christ G5547 had G1163 to suffer G3958 and rise G450 again G450 from the dead G3498, and saying, “This G3778 Jesus G2424 whom G3739 I am proclaiming G2605 to you is that [fn]Christ G5547.” 4 And some G5100 of them were persuaded G3982 and joined G4345 Paul G3972 and Silas G4609, [fn]along G5037 with G5037 a great G4183 multitude G4128 of the God-fearing G4576 Greeks G1672 and not G3756 a few G3756 of the leading G4413 women G1135. 5 But the Jews G2453, becoming G2206 jealous G2206, taking G4355 along G4355 some G5100 wicked G4190 men G435 from the marketplace G60, and forming G3792 a G3792 mob G3792, set G2350 the city G4172 in G2350 an G2350 uproar G2350. And attacking G2186 the house G3614 of Jason G2394, they were seeking G2212 to bring G4254 them out G4254 to the assembly G1218. 6 And when they did not find G2147 them, they began dragging G4951 Jason G2394 and some G5100 brothers G80 before G1909 the city G4173 authorities G4173, shouting G994, “These G3778 men G3778 who have upset G387 [fn]the world G3625 have come G3918 here G1759 also G2532; 7 [fn]and Jason G2394 has welcomed G5264 them, and they all G3956 act G4238 contrary G561 to the decrees G1378 of Caesar G2541, saying G3004 that there is another G2087 king G935, Jesus G2424.” 8 And they disturbed G5015 the crowd G3793 and the city G4173 authorities G4173 who heard G191 these G3778 things G3778. 9 And when they had received G2983 the bond G2425 from Jason G2394 and the others G3062, they released G630 them.
In Berea
10 And the brothers G80 immediately G2112 sent G1599 Paul G3972 and Silas G4609 away G1599 by night G3571 to Berea G960, [fn]and when they arrived G3854, they went G549 into the synagogue G4864 of the Jews G2453.
11 Now G1161 these G3778 were more noble-minded G2104 than those G3588 in Thessalonica G2332, [fn]for they received G1209 the word G3056 with [fn]great G3956 eagerness G4288, [fn]examining G350 the Scriptures G1124 daily G2596 G2250 to see whether G1487 these G3778 things G3778 were so G3779. 12 Therefore G3767 many G4183 of them believed G4100, along G2532 with not G3756 a few G3641 prominent G2158 Greek G1674 women G1135 and men G435. 13 But when G5613 the Jews G2453 of Thessalonica G2332 found G1097 out G1097 that the word G3056 of God G2316 had been proclaimed G2605 by Paul G3972 in Berea G960 also G2532, they came G2064 there G2546 as G2546 well G2546, shaking G4531 up G4531 and disturbing G5015 the crowds G3793. 14 Then G5119 immediately G2112 the brothers G80 sent G1821 Paul G3972 out G1821 to go G4198 as G2193 far G2193 as G2193 the sea G2281; and Silas G4609 and Timothy G5095 remained G5278 there G1563. 15 Now G1161 those G3588 who escorted G2525 Paul G3972 brought G71 him as G2193 far G2193 as G2193 Athens G116; and after receiving G2983 a command G1785 for Silas G4609 and Timothy G5095 to come G2064 to him as soon G5036 as possible G5035, they left G1826.
In Athens
16 Now G1161 while Paul G3972 was waiting G1551 for G1551 them at Athens G116, his spirit G4151 was being provoked G3947 within G1722 him as he was observing G2334 the city G4172 full G2712 of G2712 idols G2712.
17 So G3767 he was reasoning G1256 in the synagogue G4864 with the Jews G2453 and the God-fearing G4576 Gentiles, and in the marketplace G58 every G3956 day G2250 with those G3588 who happened G3909 to G3909 be G3909 present G3909. 18 And also G2532 some G5100 of the Epicurean G1946 and Stoic G4770 philosophers G5386 were [fn]conversing G4820 with him. Some G5100 were saying G3004, “What G5101 would this G3778 [fn]idle G4691 babbler G4691 wish G2309 to say G3004?” Others G3588 G1161, “He seems G1380 to be a proclaimer G2604 of strange G3581 deities G1140,”—because G3754 he was proclaiming G2097 the good G2097 news G2097 of Jesus G2424 and the resurrection G386. 19 And they took G1949 him and brought G71 him [fn]to the [fn]Areopagus G697, saying G3004, “May G1410 we know G1097 what G5101 this G3778 new G2537 teaching G1322 is [fn]which you are speaking G2980? 20 For you are bringing G1533 some G5100 strange G3579 things G3579 to our ears G189. So G3767 we want G1014 to know G1097 what G5101 these G3778 things G3778 mean G2309 G1510.” 21 (Now G1161 all G3956 the Athenians G117 and the strangers G3581 visiting G1927 there used to spend G2119 their time G2119 in nothing G3762 other G2087 than G2228 telling G3004 or G2228 hearing G191 something G5100 newer G2537.)
22 So G1161 Paul G3972 stood G2476 in the midst G3319 of the [fn]Areopagus G697 and said G5346, “Men G435 of Athens G117, I observe G2334 that you are very G1175 religious G1175 in all G3956 respects G3956. 23 For while I was passing G1330 through G1330 and examining G333 the objects G4574 of G4574 your worship G4574, I also G2532 found G2147 an altar G1041 with this G3739 inscription G1924, ‘TO AN UNKNOWN G57 GOD G2316.’ Therefore G3767 what G3739 you worship G2151 in ignorance G50, this G3778 I proclaim G2605 to you. 24 The God G2316 who made G4160 the world G2889 and all G3956 things G3956 in it, since He is Lord G2962 of heaven G3772 and earth G1093, does not dwell G2730 in temples G3485 made G5499 with hands G5499; 25 nor G3761 is He served G2323 by human G442 hands G5495, as though He needed G4326 anything G5100, since He Himself G846 gives G1325 to all G3956 people life G2222 and breath G4157 and all G3956 things G3956; 26 and He made G4160 from one G1520 man every G3956 nation G1484 of mankind G444 to inhabit G2730 all G3956 the face G4383 of the earth G1093, having determined G3724 their appointed G4367 times G2540 and the boundaries G3734 of their habitation G2733, 27 that they would seek G2212 God G2316, if G1487 perhaps G686 they might grope G5584 for Him and find G2147 Him, though G2532 G1065 He is not far G3112 from each G1538 one G1520 of us; 28 for in Him we live G2198 and move G2795 and [fn]exist G1510, as even G2532 some G5100 of your own poets G4163 have said G3004, ‘For we also G2532 are His offspring G1085.’ 29 Being G5225 then G3767 the offspring G1085 of God G2316, we ought G3784 not to suppose G3543 that the Divine G2304 Nature G2304 is like G3664 gold G5557 or G2228 silver G696 or G2228 stone G3037, an image G5480 formed G5480 by the craft G5078 and thought G1761 of man G444. 30 Therefore G3767 having overlooked G5237 the times G5550 of ignorance G52, God G2316 is now G3568 commanding G518 men G444 that everyone G3956 everywhere G3837 should repent G3340, 31 because G2530 He has fixed G2476 a day G2250 in which G3739 He will G3195 judge G2919 [fn]the world G3625 in righteousness G1343 [fn]through G1722 a Man G435 whom G3739 He determined G3724, having furnished G3930 proof G4102 to all G3956 [fn]by raising G450 Him from the dead G3498.”
32 Now G1161 when they heard G191 about the resurrection G386 of the dead G3498, some G3588 G3303 began to sneer G5512, but others G3588 said G3004, “We shall hear G191 you [fn]again G2532 G3825 concerning G4012 this G3778.” 33 In G3779 this G3779 way G3779, Paul G3972 went G1831 out G1831 of their midst G3319. 34 But some G5100 men G435 joined G2853 him and believed G4100, among G1722 whom G3739 also G2532 were Dionysius G1354 the Areopagite G698 and a woman G1135 named G3686 Damaris G1152 and others G2087 with them.
